Honestly Biffa pronouncing "Michigan" as "Mitchigan" makes me twitch even more than when Americans pronounce the full "shire" in English place names (and I'm English) 😂
Americans saying Shire fully gripes me and normally pronunciation doesn't bother me
I'm NOT British. I'm NOT American. English is NOT my first language. But I know exactly what you mean and I feel just the same😂
What? We don't pronounce shire?! This is news to me.
@@markvogel5872 In English place names, the "shire" suffix is pronounced more like "sure".
Similarly, the "folk" suffix is pronounced more like "fook" (like "foot"), and a "borough" suffix is prounced "bruh".
Oxfordshire = Oxford-sure
Norfolk = Nor-fook
Peterborough = Peter-bruh
@@markvogel5872 Yorkshire is pronounced York-Sher, rather than York-Shire
As someone who works for the Michigan Department of Transportation, It brings a smile to my face to see this used in your city. :) Looks awesome!
Glad you enjoy it!
Please do not read my comment about your work place on here lol.😉
@@markvogel5872 Its all-good brother, you should hear the things I get told in person, imagine what it'd be like if we weren't out there lol

This is amazing! Life-time Detroiter here and happy to see our weird little traffic idea help out the fine city of Kettlebridge. It's always interesting explaining a Michigan Left to out-of-towners. Thanks for the content. One new thing that has been employed recently is a "diverging diamond". Be curious to see how one of those is setup in the game.
Diverging diamonds work nicely with roads setup for median U turns, example at i75 and Big Beaver.
Had no clue Michigan added a diverging diamond. Georgia added one right to the county I lived in just after I moved out, I’m curious to see where the one in Michigan is. Anywhere near Ann Arbor by chance?
Lighting McQuuen . "Turn right to go left"😂
Lol :-)
With the Quay wall that was connected to the road entering the island, why don't you elevate the road so the Quay wall can go under it and connect with paths for peds access and removing the current ped bridge?
As an american, I have never seen the Michigan Left but it seems like just a roundabout with more steps
A u turn is easier than a roundabout
@@VinceP1974How? In both cases you just turn right
Being from Michigan, it's very humorous and difficult to listen to the pronunciation "MITCH-A-GAN" but very understandable as Biffa is from the UK.
I'm only two minutes into the video, so if this fix works and you use it in other videos, it's pronounced "MISH-A-GAN."
Depends if you speak American or English ;-)
Fun fact, michigan gets its name from the Native American (Algonquin) word "Mishigamaw" which means "big lake."
@@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylinesdo you speak English though? I only understand the word tea from you....
@@markvogel5872he definitely speaks English, but Michigan isn't an English word. You sound ignorant overall though ❤️
@@mariahh4657 hilarious you can't understand jokes.
The only change I would make (I'm just at the test world point of vid) is that when we use these lanes here in Michigan, the U-Turn aspect does not have its own dedicated lane after the turn itself. You're just turning into either of the two lanes available. Typically these are found in conjunction with a dedicated right turn lane at the intersection with two forward moving lanes.
Yay! A new Biffa Plays video! :D
One question: Are you pronouncing Michigan like Mitchigan to troll the US viewers or is that the UK way of saying it?
Either way, much love from Germany! :P

Your Tea spilled all over the floor big biff ~
I don't care how you pronounce my states name, it made me laugh for sure. Love your videos, keep up the good work.
Biffa, you can double left click to create a new node occasionally!! No need to use roads. Also, you can just move the paths until the traffic light and crossing just disappears with no snapping on, just adjust it. Also, people can't go all the way around to do a U-Turn on a roundabout, it's very non-flexible at the moment. You should have downgraded the road after the roundabout to a 4l2w (2 on each side) to make space for the Kettlebridge right.
I still love your content though!!
If you wanted to call it something besides the "Kettlebridge right", I think a good British alternative that sounds similar to "Michigan left" would be a "Manchester right" or even a "Mancusian right".
I like how all the cars in the thumbnail are entering the intersection
17:05 that kink in the road leading in to the roundabout on the other side, tho' :D
Also: Just wanted to remind you that you have that unused street parallel to the road with the actual turn for the row houses to go on to, to remove the "stroad" completely :D
Thanks, Biffa! :) I think if you got rid of the pedestrian crossings and the exclusive phase on the main intersection it would work better. I'd give them bridges over the road instead just because it's so busy.
Keep pronouncing Michigan the way you are. Keep being you. Love it.
I try
Hello! Local Michigan resident chiming in here!
First off, love that you did this.
Second off, many of our Michigan lefts have TWO left turn lanes designated. This drastically helps with throughput, and the outside of those lanes are primarily used for the cars that need to make an immediate right afterwards. This helps reduce additional lane merges right afterwards.
Cheers mate! Enjoy those Kettlebridge rights!
LoL ❤😂 Michigan : mi·shuh·gn. I am not busting on ya… I love ya. It just puts a smile on my face. 😊 it’s a US state most don’t want to live in. 😂 …and yes. Don’t expect me to event attempt to pronounce anything in the UK. 🇬🇧

In most places Michigan lefts are implemented they're on both of the roads creating the intersection, so theres 4 total spots for a u-turn. This actually creates 2 ways to go left; you can go straight, u-turn and turn right. Or turn right, u-turn and go straight. For british version its all just reversed. And honestly the u-turn points are little bit closer to the intersection than you have here in game.
Seems like they still have not fixed traffic lights. American lights have left turns going only, then straight on. They have left turns going at the same time as straight on traffic, which creates stoppages in the intersection, which inturn holds up traffic from flowing.
As a lifelong Michigan resident I have used the "Michigan left" but never realized it was that efficient or unique.
As a Michigan native who's driven on Michigan lefts hundreds of times. It's nice to see it being used in cities skylines
One feature of successful Michigan lefts is that they tend to add the u-turn lane for just just a short leadup, like a highway off-ramp, so the turners don't block the main thruway.
Additionally, the u-turn can get a synchronized traffic signal with the main signal to allow the main intersection to clear and the turners to make their action before the whole major road is full-green.
There are more places than just “Mitchigan” that use our turn concept, maybe it started with us? Michigan also allows turning left at a red light at those lefts or any other left at T intersections, assuming no signage says otherwise. Good video as always!
UA-cam has now just become your channel for me. Since following 5/6 weeks ago, I’ve watched two series to completion (your final vanilla and New Tealand) as much as Kettlebridge will be enjoyed one day I’ve now started Blightea so I’m off to enjoy the past while you keep creating the future. Much love!
New Tealand imo is still one of the best series on UA-cam
Well thank you! Glad I can entertain lol - welcome to the channel too :-)
Thanks Brad! :-)
Blightea was my fav series so far
For your bridge-side connections, there’s another (in)famous Michigan turn called the ‘Yooper loop.’ It’s used on a particular intersection that cannot have vehicle backup due to essential industry crossings.
Born and raised in Mitchigan... Telegraph Road in Detroit is endless miles of Michigan Lefts. However, it's entirely too sunny in your demonstration!
Seriously, Biffa would love Mitchigan. 24 hours a day of completely gray sky. Would be like he'd never left England.
We need a traffic manager.
I get constant U-turns in the middle of an avenue and when there is rush hour, ,just ONE damn car wanting to make a U-turn grinds that whole area of the city to a halt.
I understand that they want some drivers to break rules but I have a whole city of drivers that will make left turns at intersections even when they are turned off..
The person who wrote the code for lane changing was the same person who drives 70mph in the far left lane and then cuts over four lanes of traffic to make their exit in ten feet..
Michigan isn't pronounced with the "ch" sound, it's more of "sh" sound. More like "mish-a-gan" not "mich-a-gan". Love the videos!
Depends if you speak American or English ;-)
Are you trying to teach a Brit how to speak a proper english? 😅
I mean, it's not spelled "mitch-a-gan"
It’s a Native American word so, it’s how they pronounce that takes precedent, not the pronunciations rules of British or American English. In fact it’s French pronunciation of the original word, “mishigami” that the name of the state is derived from.
So going back to the point, you pronounce it as if you’re about say “Michelin”.
Ch and sh sound? Are you joking?
I love your cute little Mictchagan pronunciation! Sometimes when we have a crosswalk we build a walkway under the bridge by the water. I dont know if you can do that in game but it would be a nice view and provide cover if there was a flash rain storm.
As a Michigander seeing this: YAY!!! 😍
As a Michigander hearing this: Oh no no no noooo! 😢
Pronunciation is along the lines of: MiSHigan. And yes, we do use them a lot here. Anywhere you have a heavily trafficked boulevard type road with a median, you will find them. Love seeing this, even swapped to the right!
edit: though you'll be delighted to learn we've been putting in roundabouts rapidly here. Nearing 200 in the state now.
If there’s something we could definitely use more of it’s pork chop islands
I mean... It's just basically a long thin roundabout
You seem to have the core concepts on the Michigan left / Kettlebridge right. Keep it in your arsenal of knowledge for when helping people fix their traffic problems.
I'm happy to hear you mention my home state on here!
I think the reason you still occasionally get people going right when they shouldn't is because some sim's will break the law and ignore traffic rules (kind of like real life). Unfortunately theres no option to install camera's at a junction and institute fines for not following the traffic rules, as this is usually effective and making people follow them.
In Spain they use roundabouts to turn left. Eg. 36°45'11.2"N 4°25'33.2"W
It's a Biffagin Right...lol
10:02 - No one ever needs to travel down this road once you disconnected it
Love your traffic solution! I can't wait to test it on my city busy intersections. Traffic management is really hard on cs2
In Argentina most cities and towns have their local roads as one ways and collectors are the only two way roads. Left turns are banned on any major road. The correct maneuver is, if you have to turn left at 3rd st you make a right in 2nd, then a left in the next road, then a left onto 3rd, and then, on 3rd st, you cross over the avenue. I have tried this system in cs1 and it works really fine. The drawback is that it kind of forces you to use grids
replace the u-turn by a small roundabout, where through-traffic gets a lane next to the roundabout itself.
Now you have a Misjigan left that works in two directions!
Check out northern Telegraph Road (12 Mile and north) in Southfield, MI. It is a "couplet" that uses exclusively Michigan (BTW: "MISH-a-gan"), Lefts. I drive this stretch of Telegraph every day. You will also see at most crossovers (aka U-Turns), it has signals that are timed/phased with the main intersection, as well. Thus, traffic making the U-Turn is protected, allowing for a bit more controlled flow.
In my current CS2 city, I utilized Michigan Lefts on a couplet, including an intersection of two couplets. Vanilla has a few issues with lane management, and until we get the ability to link traffic light nodes with each other, it is a bit clunky.
Thanks for the great video.
REDUCED CONFLICT INTERSECTION LETS GOOOOOOO
(this is what we call this type of intersection in minnesota, usa!)
I live in MiSHigan and am seriously thinking about pronouncing it Biffa's way from now on ;-) Telegraph Road is pretty fun for that type of left-hand turn.
We call those a P turn here in Melbourne. They have Hook turns in the CBD due to the trams and then have started using P turns on some other major roads for right hand turns to improive traffic flow and you can have more space for right hand turning traffic.
The P turn/michigan left helps because it allows for more than a single dedicated straight lane through the intersection. You could have achieved similar results by using a typical Intersection design, Dedicated cross intersection turning lane, middle lanes are dedicated straights, outboard lanes are combination turning/straight.
I noticed while you were changing the roads out for the bigger ones for the Michigan Lefts you had your Anarchy on so you might check those areas and that would cause the traffic lights not to be removed. You could your rights the Royal Rights instead of the Michigan Lefts, thank you for your content I love all that you do have a great 1.
Glad you are taking part of my home state and applying it to your city!
I think the time has come for the city to earn a dock! A port for shipping, so everyone in Kettlebridge can import in some tea to brew. Such a place could include a lovely freight line link by trains, with maybe a freeway route so lorries can quickly enter and leave the port.
We have a dock, guess you missed that episode! ;-)
@@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines I probably have. 😆
In which case, what about a business park area, with some signature Office buildings in it?
Seeing as Michigan is next to a big lake maybe we should call it a Rutland Right in the UK as that is next to a big lake too.
Another similar version of this idea is the Jersey Jug handle. Jug handles are used to handle turning traffic in a T intersection. Instead of having a left/u turn lane at the intersection, you disable turns and prior to the intersection have all traffic intending to turn make a right turn along a jug handle which will reconnect the intersection facing towards where the left turn would have taken them. Now they can simply drive straight when the light changes and not have impeded the straight on traffic when red. Basically, you have drivers take a right to turn left.
That seems dangerous; cars crossing the central reservation directly into the fast lane at slow speeds.
It's generally fine, though, for a few reasons: since cars slow & stop for the intersection (doesn't make sense to blow through at high speed!), and since the stoplights encourage "packets" of traffic to queue up and pass through all at once-leaving behind a vacuum of free space after for the U-turn cars to make their move with little conflict.
In real life, some of these U-turns are even signalized (timed to the central intersection) to protect the turn for cars to U-turn into any receiving lane (useful especially for cars with poor turn radius).
I’m so glad you’ve been privy to my biggest frustration with this game and the traffic, they don’t follow the rules I set regarding left and right turns!!! I’d like to see the in game police get involved or some kind of camera that fines people for breaking rules as an additional source of income
I grew up in michigan and drove these all the time so this was very cool to see you talk about! The East Beltline road in Grand Rapids is a very good example of the michigan left being used on a high capacity road.. the u-turns get crazy during rush hour though
These are actually really useful with the vanilla traffic lights. Can't believe I haven't used them. Thanks for the idea.
Mitchigan killed me. But i do have something that might work as well. We have what we call a "Michigan left" here in Indiana. It offers more movement and there is no turning in the intersection its only straight through with all turning away from the intersection. I pulled the GPS its just north of Indianapolis i bet there are others but its the one i know of.
39°55'36"N 86°03'58"W
Biffa content to help get through the day
Put 2 Pedestrian bridges over the intersection diagonally, and add one pedestrian ramp per corner. If you want to make it more inclusive, you could instead lift up the intersection and put the paths under it on ground level.
I love how you said Michigan. Cutest pronunciation error! Love your videos, been a fan forever ❤
😊 thank you
Always fun seeing my state represented in something! :)
15:31 Could even get rid of both walk crossings by getting a walk ramp down from that walk bridge too !
I'd call it the "Gladstone Right", Gladstone being a place in the UK and in Michigan. ^^
I’m European and I had never heard about the existence of a Michigan Left. Guess you always learn something new about the world when you play videogames.
Call it a Blighty Righty, to cover the whole country. Yes, I know it wasn't for Blighty-on-the-Wold, but it's catchy
Now this is the name I like!!!! Or the Blightea Rightea :-)
@@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines Oh! Now that is better! It's a yes from me.
Great team work, thankyou 👍
The "blighty righty" is a thing in the outer areas of Birmingham, UK. Due to the limited space they have for roundabouts
O the Biffa Right has arrived 😂😂 😂 😂
I’m from Michigan and just love how you say Mitch-i-gan!
In Metro Manila, we even ban crossing over in some of our main roads. If you are coming from the side roads, you have to turn right through the main road, merge into the inner lane, take the u-turn slot, merge again into the outer lane, turning right back to the side road. Making the intersection a small "oblong-a-bout"...
For boulevards and Michigan lefts now, I preplan with parallel one way roads rather than the separated roads. That way, I can make the left/right hand turn two lanes
Yeah, I'm from Michigan, and have been using Michigan Lefts in the original CS for years to solve traffic problems. Super easy to build, works well with roundabouts, and works regardless of road width.
Oh, and its "Mish"igan, not "Mitch"igan. Its an anglicized Native American word that means great/big lake.
I've watched this series from the beginning and as soon as he made this section I said to myself, Biffa you know that's too many intersections on that road.
I feel like the ‘Michigan left’ principle is used in England all over the place, but not strictly. As we love roundabouts, there are intersections with roundabouts instead of the U-turn sections featured here. However this isn’t strictly policed with a no left turn, but is used by commuters when traffic in the left turn lane builds up.
Great idea! Kettlebridge right will work perfect for that! I've seen that all over America on interstates especially. Solves a lot of issues!! I enjoy these videos🤩 Learn something new all the time!
Didn't know that michigan left was a famous thing.
We have something similar in my home town, but instead of a U turn you go into a roundabout at each end.
Love the Mitch again left Biffa! I knew the comment section would have the correction, but I like Mitch again. 😂
I would like to see Kettlebride at Night someday. Sure it might not be too great to play with, but just looking at the city at night from time to time is enough :D
Considering both Detroit in Michigan and Liverpool were major industrial centers, why not the Liverpool Right? Although it doesn't have the same ring as a Liverpool Left would 🤓
Damn, some vehicles are still turning right! (18:47)
Can you build the craziest junction ever? One that confuses the drivers where to go and a pain to our eyes.
We call that a round about in America, lol. I don't mind them, but some people freak out.
I can't wait for a Hugo There mod. Watching my traffic wantonly changing lanes brings back memories of learning to drive on the Beltway eons ago.
I also have a remake of the freeway 69-6 in the Detroit area in one of my Cities 2 cities. its works super well!!
I was born in Michigan and live here. If anything you pronounce it..Mishigan (Michigan). Once I heard Biffa pronounce it, I paused the video and laughed, then I commented as fast as I could.
Love you Biffa. Having a cup of tea now.
there are some major cities in Canada that alternate traffic. so there at a four way light intersection 3 of the lights are red and one is green, then it alternates so there is only one side going at a time, but you can still make right hand turns at the reds, as long as you stop first and is safe to do so
I like the term "Kettlebridge right" However, the generic term is median U-turn; this applies whether you drive on the right side or the wrong, I mean left. 😜
When roads get this busy, it's time to make them one-way.
the PHANTOM T appears again.. lol
You should also try the New Jersey Jug handle. An engineering marvel!
Nice Video! Thank you.
Biffa, if you raise the road and the roundabout leading to the naughty junction, the cars wouldn't fall off a cliff/ have to do a rock climb, plus the pedestrian quay road could be connected underneath... Would look much better! 😅
One more lane fixes everything. 😄
Call it Yorkshire-right. 😁 Got a good ring to it.
This is an example of a Michigan left, however in most cases, the medians are quite a bit wider so the traffic can move more quickly, and often there is a light at the turnaround so that U turn traffic can safely cross the several lanes to complete their "left". The lights are usually timed such that the traffic on the boulevard will not get caught at lights so long as it maintains speed at near the speed limit. This 3 light intersection can be very efficient this way, allowing tremendous traffic flow on the divided highway, with only the intersecting roads and turning traffic being significantly slowed by lights. The best part about it, is all turning traffic can turn on red because no turns cross traffic, which also makes these very fast intersections when traffic is light and you could otherwise be sitting waiting minutes for a turn signal for no reason.
Sounds great for pedestrians!
@@schaaf132 not really worse than any other crossing. Anyone turning on red just needs to be careful to yield to pedestrians.
I loved this one but as you were adding that Michigan left next to the round about I was wringing my hands…why??? Lol at least you figured it out in the end! 😂
I'm off to try this out!
