ARG participator here, things might not be in chronological order but heres the stuff, the arg started on sept 27 they pretty much just updated the website and the first thing that welcomed you there was a snippet of slip under the door (specifically the intro to it) with the visuals saying "please stand by" after it ended you got dropped in a "labyrinth" where you could find snippets to other songs (from the cia, 200, abyss angel, coalacanth, commatose) through tapes and stuff and there were other videos too, one contained a phone number, which had little passwords which were meant to be found but someone brute forced them and we got the release date, 2 different names for the album (plastic death, and placid depth), and an altered tracklist (some of the names where different) also we got 2 snippets (motions, commatose) before the phoneline closed down, after that it was just looking around the website for clues, that led to more snippets (motions, slip under the door, rare animal, cul-de-sac), on oct 4 the cctv site from the labyrinth finally got a video that depicted the filming scene in the cia music video, also people found an sstv audio file that was constructed into a really bad quality version of the album cover (this is when fans "gleachers" named the abyss angel allen) on oct 10 the cia was released as a single, then like about 2 weeks we found a zip file which had passwords on it, most passwords were got from tape1009(dropped on oct 4, also if i remember right this also contained a cul-de-sac snippet) and one of the passwords were just brute forced, at the end we got .wav file of rare animal and thats where the arg pretty much ended, i mean there were a lot of other cool stuff too, like there was a qna space also a lot of dates were found on whiteboard early on, also a cool other website explaining the abyss angel and people finding things, buildings in the ocean which shouldnt be there, also there was "tapir realm" which were just silly animations, there was also a lotta stuff about the red book by carl gustva jung, also at some point all the lyrics of coelacanth was on a page (accidentally), anyways the arg was pretty fucking cool, love this silly little queer band. PLASTIC DEATH FUCKING ROCKS!

Im so happy that both of you covered this record! glass beach is one of my favourite bands ever, I discovered them in 2020 while I was going through some harsh moments in my life, and the first glass beach album helped me so much. I love plastic death first listen, i've been listening a lot of it recently and I just keep enjoying it a lot more. I really liked how much both of you covered each song, and im glad that both alex and astrid enjoyed it!

i loved this album so much. glass beach made waves (lol) with their first album and if they inevitably tried to do the same formula as the first album they'd face the risk of failing and making something that just isnt as strong. So after all these years they made something thats in a completely different direction, instead of brutally emotionally honest and literal lyrics of the first album j goes for more abstract songwriting wherein everybody can take a different thing from - in your case, you sort of figured out the things j wanted to bring accross to us like the ownership of your body and you image, but you also touched on some interpetations that i found interesting: the US and their army and so on.
Astrid should check out some modern 5th wave Skramz if she liked 'slip under the door', im not too well knowledged on the genre but i think heccra is a good starting point just from what i've heard my skramz folk talking about (i could be completely off base tho, someone should correct me if there's better recomendations).
personally im not someone who really cares that much about the lyrics, im a music-first type of person, and the gang did not disappoint. i LOVE drums and interesting drumming in albums, and they're done so well - if you pay attention to them they're really well performed but you can space out from them to listen to the rest of the music, they dont take up the whole space. the way harmonies are composed is something i havent seen complimented enough by fans - its INSANE: classical composition level of harmonic complexity.
commatose is my favourite song and overall the album is probably gonna end up being my AOTY, the only bands that miiight challenge that spot is going to be weatherday's hornet disaster (another great nonbinary emo artist) and cursive (emo classics). But I would NOT be unhappy if even more albums came out and were at this level of adoration from me, im never gonna pass up good music!

hey! i took part in the ARG for the first couple weeks-the first day it dropped, there was a phone number hidden on the ARG website that when you called it had some snippets of things-it ended up getting so many calls that by midnight they had to close the line lol
further on, the ARG revealed the album name, the tracklist, and snippets of all songs on the album. it was fun :)
also the name of the creature on the cover is an abyss angel, his name is allen :3

I love how they changed flows between tfgba and pd. It shows they’re not scared of trying new things. But all the songs have a similar feeling, something you can’t describe, and that’s what makes them different from other bands. Glass Beach will always have a place in my heart

HI! I was one of the people that participated in the ARG on the discord! It was a lot of fun, tbh everything went by super fast people figured stuff out really quickly. Some of the highlights of cool stuff i saw was someone reorganized the static on one of the videos by literally cutting apart the frame and re editing it leading to a website. At another point there was a cypher that had to be cracked and if i recall correctly people just ended up brute forcing it, but me and some friends tried solving it for a while which was good fun. I ended up contributing to it by taking the coordinates on three of the videos on the website and triangulating them, which led to this is bird sanctuary of the coast of Hawaii, which someone used later as a website subdomain to get the cipher mentioned above. Which then eventually someone used to get the song rare animal earlier then its release. Honestly really hype experience in general. glass beach also did one for thier first album (there's an archive of it on their website) so hopefully they may end up doing one for their third album as well! Any way love to see people talking about glass beach, thanks for reviewing easily one of my fav bands!

gah!! I love this anysis!!! i usually dont like music reviewes or picking it apart just because I wanna do it myself and firmly beleive that the meaning i derive is the important one yadda yadda, but i did give this video a shot because j reccomended it herself. Additionally yall are queer so thats like 100 extra points in my book.
anyways! i think you both had alot of great meaning pulled from this, shat stood out ro me was alex's connecting of puppy and killer and commatose and abyss angel, in my head thoose were all more seperate. there were some other things I took away like in my head slip inder the door was alot about fears of transitioning, but i think all interpritations are great! wonderful video, you two rock!!!

Astrid please please please listen to Weatherday - Come In. Its noisy and colorful nb fronted emo that is constantly shifting and surprising. It feels like a huge inspiration for Lilac Boy, so Id be a little surprised if it isnt up your alley. It released arpund the same time around The First glass Beach Album and has about the same amount of influence on this wave of emo.

I hadn't heard of glass beach before now. Listening to the work they did before this release def payed off when I gave it a listen. I had trouble understanding the lyrics (both for this album and their previous work) so I can't say how much the lyrical content has shifted from their previous work (I believe their 2021 EP dealt with themes prevalent in plastic death but I didn't deep dive on the lyrics). Still, I felt like the expressiveness and emotion the band put into their songs really came through with this eclectic sound. I'm curious where they'll take things from here. Fav songs: slip under the door, cul-de-sac, 200 (200 is my fav rn)

My favorite type of albums are, like you said, one you can interpret in your ways. My first listen on this album is kinda mid, since I can't really hear the lyrics. Yet, on the second hearing an onwards the lyrics sold me. Especially the infinite cycle, ouroboros, and hermeneutic themes present in the albums. Very though provoking album and review from your part. Which lead me to recommend one of my favorite, albeit old, album from my dearly beloved Tally Hall; "Good & Evil". The album tackles the concept of binary opposition and I kinda wanna hear your guys thought about it.

I do have a point, do bear with me yall :)
I'm someone whose engagement with music is fairly surface-level. While I absolutely recognize music as an artform with as much depth as any other and while I occasionally enjoy seeking that depth within musical pieces, to me music is usually something in the background or as a part of an audio-visual experience/work.
When I listen to a song, my mind doesn’t automatically seek or find those deeper, more artistic connections within it. What it does often instantly and unconsciously seek to connect the piece of music to, is an accompanying visual element. Usually in the form of a cinematic scene or other video-like visual.
I’m a photographer and a while ago, after having just taken a photograph, a friend of mine saw that photo and said something to akin to - “Why’d you take that picture” - to which I responded to saying something like - “Well that composition brings out so and so, which reinforces that feeling those colors in the shadows create and all that builds on the story of this photo” - Hearing that he seemed puzzled, It felt like he understood the more ‘technical’ reasons but that ‘story’ part was kind of lost on him. After a bit he said - “I didn’t really see it at first, but after you said it… yeah, i see that story part you talked about.” - And that really stuck with me. What felt obvious for me to see and experience as part of that genre of art was something they just didn’t get as easily.
And I recently realized that what he experienced back all those years ago is what I feel like listening to this podcast.
It feels like finding and experiencing those more artistic levels within the music you review comes easier to you than me, and It's really cool to hear about that process of exploring these tracks from both of your perspectives. Listening to the podcast and being like “Oh, i didn't see that” or maybe even realizing I've missed an angle completely is a super fun experience.
So yeah, thanks for sharing these podcasts with us
