  • I'm doing a flash review of three Irish whiskeys today. I'll be looking at the Hinch Small Batch Bourbon release, the Roe & Co 13 year old port-matured cask strength, and the Tyrconnell 16 year old. Should be interesting! Cheers!

    Thanks for the reviews. I baught the Tyrconnell 16 on your recommendation, as well as the 15 yo, and I love them both, with a slight preference for the 15 which has a Madeira finish. They both taste like Irish whisky to me in that they are sweeter than most Scotch, more like Bourban, plus, going from memory, the oaty coko cereal tinned fruit notes, but not as much as Redbreast. Do try the extrordonary Glendalough 13yo Mizunara Finish, if you get the chance. Slaint

    “….which is also whisky.” LOL The Spots are worth checking out for sure - unusual Irish-style profiles. Look out for Knappogue Castle 14-year-old Twin Wood at 46%.

      The Knappogue Castle isn't sold here. So many people tell me it's good stuff. I've seen the Spot whiskies come and go from the shelves here, but they're rare and quite pricey, unfortunately. Appreciate the suggestions, buddy. I'll definitely grab them if I come across a deal!

    Hi Geoff. I could recommend the Green Spot Léoville Barton and yellow spot, getting a bit pricey though. Knappogue castle 14 single malt (basically Bushmills) is also worth a buy, again the price is going up. Haven’t had it but heard that powers John’s Lane 12 is pretty good? Don’t really buy many Irish whiskies my money mainly goes on Scotch single malt. Thanks for this review Geoff 👍Slàinte .

      @Gwhisky  Рік тому

      Hi David. Aside from the Powers (which is horribly overpriced here), none of those whiskies are available to me, unfortunately. We just don't have much selection when it comes to quality Irish over here. And like you, my money tends to get spent on scotch first and foremost. But if I come across any of your recommendations at a fair price I'll likely grab them. I've been wanting to try Yellow Spot for ages! Cheers!

    Great review :) Been considering a bottle of Redbreast 21 for over a year now, but the price was just a bit to high. Last week however it popped up in an online store I've been buying from for 135 euros. At that price I snapped it up right away, can't wait to try it :)

    I think of Irish Whiskey as I do bourbon, rye, and Tennessee Whiskey. These are pleasant spirits that I enjoy as an alternative to scotch. As you know, the cost of scotch has skyrocketed. I too do not have a bottomless bank account. So I tend to spend more for scotch than other spirits. I won’t spend money on high priced Irish whiskey. So for me, if it’s an Irish that’s over $50 USD, it will not be coming home with me. Just my opinion of course.

    • @MrChristopherMolloy
      @MrChristopherMolloy Рік тому +2

      It's increasingly difficult to buy any well-pedigreed whisk(e)y, Irish or otherwise, for less than $50. That being said, there are some very good sub-$50 options out there in just about every category.

    • @alandiaz1041
      @alandiaz1041 Рік тому +1

      I don’t mind spending $50+ for a scotch. I can taste the difference in most cases. I can’t say the same for Irish or bourbon. I see these reviews for top shelf bourbon that costs upward of $100+ and when I try those upper echelon bourbons, I just don’t get it. I can have a $24 bourbon that is just as satisfying as a $100 bourbon. Maybe my taste buds for bourbon just aren’t as sharp or “refined” as my taste buds are for scotch are. I enjoy bourbon and Irish but they are always secondary spirits to scotch for me. No offense to those that feel the opposite.

    • @MrChristopherMolloy
      @MrChristopherMolloy Рік тому +2

      @@alandiaz1041 Oh I totally agree, but again if I'm being honest, there are very many over-$50 Scotches which are in no way worth their 2022 prices; many are just rebranded blend-filler malts from yesteryear, and things like 21 or 25 year old age statements are in no way guarantees of exceptionalism IMHO.
      So just like a $25 bourbon offers just about everything a $100+ bottle of bourbon does, a $50 bottle of Craigellachie 13, or a $55 bottle of Glenmorangie 14, or $60 bottle of Ledaig 10 offer at least 90% of what each of their Scotch styles have to offer.
      I could probably say the same for Loch Lomond 12, Bunnahabhain Stiùireadair, and Ardbeg 5 for even less ✌️

    Nice one Geoff. All 3 of these whiskies are "techncally" sourced buddy. The Hinch came from Great Northern Distillery, that Roe & Co. (as you and someone else mentioned) is Bushmills. I believe it to be natural colour and NCF. And the Tyrconnell is Cooley.
    As you said, the Hinch is simple. It's never gonna blow minds. That particular Roe & Co I love. Most of their other releases are bizarre/dull.
    Tyrconnell is one of those classic names which was revived by Cooley. The name was originally owned by Watt distilleries who are also making a comeback here in Northern Ireland. There's no denying that Cooley always produced solid stuff.
    Cheers mate.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Jim! Yeah I assumed the Roe & Co. was natural. Would be nice to have it stated. I've been looking at their 2019 NAS Cask Strength release, which is about half the price of the port release. But I'm not quite sold on it just yet. Might hold off. As for the Tyrconnell, it's convinced me to get my hands on more Cooley-produced whiskey. Thoroughly impressed! Appreciate the info, buddy!

    7:00 Best Irish whisky I've ever had thus far. For me I give it a 91. I'm sure the redbreast 21 will take the lead once I try that, but even so, this one was just unforgettable in my journey, and I wish I could find it again. Funnily enough, the 16 with the finish just doesn't do it for me, it destroys the mid palate malty "swell" and the tropical fruit that just gives this whisky its wonderful identity. When I first tried the 16, I was disappointed, and every time I had it thereafter, I loved it more and more. Hopefully it'll play like that with you as well. Shame on you for not buying me a bottle and sending it to Canada (just joking! :)

      Hah wow that's high praise. My favourite Irish still has to go to the Redbreasts, but this ones a stunner, too. That RB21 is likely going to be fantastic. I've heard so many good things about it.

    You are very skinny on the Irish in your market Geoff. I've tried Writer's Tears, Jamesons, Glendalough, Bushmills 10, Blackbush, Black Barrel but after all that and somewhat of a waste at that, I have now settled on Redbreast 12, Green spot, Yellow Spot, Redbreast 15 for my palate - highly recommend these. I have stashed away Redbreast 10 CS, Redbreast 21, Midleton Very Rare 2021, 2022 for the splurge later. Good age stated Irish are getting just as expensive as the single malts these days. Crazy times to say the least!!
