Thank you so much!! That while section was definitely challenging, but the company, the views, and if I'm being honest, the bragging rights, definitely made it all worthwhile!! Glad you're enjoying it!!
All I kept thinking is someone needs to create a helicopter business out of Bishop that drops in a net bag of food supplies at a given coordinate. Hey, I’ll be anxiously waiting to get your next updates. Bravo to you, Shade, and Rabbit. You’re doing an incredible job under trying conditions. At least the weather is cooperating.
Wow, what a day! Beautiful and treacherous. Fascinating to see you read snow as we read skies. That descent from Glens Pass - Shade is brave and strong indeed, as are you all. What a challenge … Ahh, but then the turquoise lakes! - a sweet reward.
I recall Glen Pass being sketchy even in a normal year in mid-July! And the mosquitoes at Rae Lakes were in legions! Clouds of them! We later camped right at Mather Pass to try to escape them but some even made it that high! But Onion Valley to South Lake was a great hike.
this is Nuts! i went up glen pass on the south side in 2019 after a "big snow" year but in July/ was easy just ice on the lakes. it was nothing like this / wow that is amazing. we just looked over the pass and went back out kearsarge/ cant even imagine going down the north side in all that snow wow... rough hiking glad you all are making it ok/ thanks for taking us with you
Good exploration of the mountain, hidden rocks and incipient avalanches. Glad you're in good company. What an incredible achievement and effort. (by the way, when I saw your images, I got flashbacks of Lake Ann Pass and Grays Peak CDT). Keep it up Beat!
Going back through your videos... I did Glen Pass in 2004 (June 17th) with a fair amount of coverage. Plunge-stepped my way down (hoping I didn't bottom-out on a rock 😛). My left shoulder strap snapped about midway down (I had a external frame pack). I was able to McGyver it back together with some zip ties, but that initial loss of load balance on that slope was a moment of excitement 😀.
Thanks again for the great videos of the PCT in the later spring / early summer of 2023. It is an inspiration to us all who love to backpack. Trying to get over 10 miles per day is way too slow to cross the high sierras from Kennedy Meadows to the Bishop pass trail still maybe 15 miles from South lake them maybe another 25 miles by road to Bishop, CA. I am not too sure there are many bail out trails between Glen pass and the Bishop pass trail. Between Kearsarge pass and Bishop pass there are not many well used exits from the PCT / JMT through the high sierras.. How do you keep dry and warm feet in that constant snow, ice and water without sun and heat? I would take off my boots putting on camping shoes to cross those deep cold creeks and streams. Then, I would put my warm and dry boots back on after the stream crossing. There seems to be several people and groups following you and your group crossing from Kennedy Meadows to Yosemite National Park Tuolumme Meadows in this early summer of 2023.
Yes, the conditions are just intrinsically slow-going, especially when you prioritize safety and are traveling with like-minded companions. Regarding feet, I wear both Injinji toesock Liners and Darn Tough Merino socks, and those are plenty warm enough while moving even when wet and even in snow. My feet do get cold quickly when we stop, however. For crossing, my boots (Salomon Quest 4) are gore-tex, which so far has been helpful for the low running water onttail, etc, but I will remove them for any crossing that involve water higher than the boot.
Your solar panel is a good one, I used it last year on the same trail at the same time (but nearly no snow ;) - my 10.000 mA power bank never got empty in 2 weeks (phone, in Reach, head lamp, camera). What I see in 10:00 : you use it on the hike (good) but you have strapped it to your snow shoe with a strap half covering two of the cells (those dark segments) - which means the panel delivers only half power. The weakest cell decides on the avaliable current. - I had seen the same - even worse - in the video from the day before, where one cell was covered even more by this strap. Don't do this! - Use the hole on top to fix it, and have all cells free from shadow!
Thanks for the input!! Yeah I was struggling with how to mount it safely with the snowshoes but now the snowshoes are gone so I'm hoping to have better performance. I too used this panel last year, though on the CDT, and was impressed enough that it warranted a spot on my gear list for this hike, too!!
I take it the lost water bottles happened during falls and they fell out of Shane’s pack and slid down the mountain? No judgment but just thinking about how one might rig them in similar conditions so they can’t go far. I’m catching up with your vlogs. This is one riveting series; way better than binging on “Yellowstone”!😂 Good luck as you move north. - Martin
I mean, Yellowstone is a fantastic show as well!! Yeah I think Shade just needs to tweak her pack a little to keep things a little tighter. Good thing is we found out that a group behind us had also lost a water bottle, but found hers and picked it up and used it the rest of the way!
@@travelinbeat glad to hear someone else benefited. Obviously, you three made it to Bishop and now well beyond so it all worked out. The amount of snow and winter conditions the “Beat Team” is working through is just crazy but very impressive. Lots of smart decisions are being made, just a few of which we viewers get to see, that lead to success. Thanks for documenting your journey. It is truly an epic story. Good luck 🍀 up the trail.
ya glen is a bad one maybe even the worst for safety, at least you did not have an involuntary glissade. Rae lakes is one of the best loop trails for summer i highly recommend a summer trip at some time in the future. if yall need a shuttle at Carson pass or echo summit hit me up its my backyard.
@@travelinbeat I live in socal, so have been hiking the sierra for years in different conditions The time we did glen in full snow we were going south We camped overnight at rae lakes, so I had all afternoon/evening to stare at that paas and get progressively more freaked out It was finally early am and time to go. Like you we went super slow; the anxiety level was immense
Dicey crossing, well done and staying positive. Just curious...how do you fill 2 hours on your pack-up in the morning? Seems very long, no judgement, just super curious.
Good question-- I make coffee (pourover), eat breakfast, take care of umm... physiological needs, and then start packing up. I don't like waking up early but I like even less feeling rushed in the morning
@@travelinbeat Thanks! Makes sense. That’s a little different than the “Hiker Frappuccino” that I invented for hiking. I love them. You take a caramel candy and suck on it for a minute without swallowing anything. Then you had about an ounce of water. Then add a Starbucks Via and shake your head back and forth while the candy mixes everything up like a ball in a spray paint can. Then you enjoy the flavor and swallow the coffee in one gulp and then finish sucking on the candy. It’s my go-to morning drink. You can do it without breaking stride. Haha. Love ‘em. Great work on the hike, the videos, and your positivity! Happy Trails! -GoalTech
I'm watching this barely but man oh man how I'm just sooo happy amazed and proud of rabbit and shade 😊
Thank you so much!! That while section was definitely challenging, but the company, the views, and if I'm being honest, the bragging rights, definitely made it all worthwhile!! Glad you're enjoying it!!
Making it by happen, Beats! Very beautiful. Know the Team can do this. Thanks and best....pops
I know you're through it now, but it's hard not to pray and pray as I watch this. Bravo!
A safe crossing is a great day. But running out of food is a bad day. The need to fuel long days vs. running low. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks, yeah, glad to have had the foresight to pack some extra grub!!
Fin Dome behind you.
Absolutely stunning!!
Man, kickin steps and going down facing the mountain the whole way had to be exhausting. That would be some white knuckle, teeth clenching climbing!
Definitely kick stepping in full inversion isn't fun, but it's certainly safer and safer-feeling than not facing the slope!
I don't think I could do that pass if there was no snow. Bravo to Shade and all of you.
She's a real trooper, man, she's the real deal
Well done Beat, Shade and Rabbit. Beautiful
Thanks!
You guys are doing everything by the book. Congratulations! Extraordinary videos!!!
Thanks, FW, that's nice to hear!!
So many great people watching and commenting!!!

Absolutely the weather has been amazong and YESYESYES to air drops of resupply!
The geologic feature at Rae Lakes is called the Fin Dome. Another tough epic day.
Thanks!! Such a cool spot for sure!!
Great Campsite !!! Been there 3 times....but without the snow!!!
Nice!! Probably a little nicer in those conditions but hey we had the entire basin all to ourselves so that was cool, too!
The back side of Glen Pass was epic.
That's certainly one adjective for it!! 😆

Indeed!!
Good vibes your way, take care, Crackerjack.
I'll take all of those I can get, thanks, Crackerjack!
Sending good vibes and praying 🙏 for you all to get through these Sierras.
Thanj you so much, Denise!! I welcome whatever positive vibes and divine help I can gather!!
That was a tough day!
More and more of those, it's seeming!

I think I've seen 2 mosquitos so far in the Sierra-- #silverlinings

Haha, yeah it's BANANAS this year!! No wonder like 95% if hikers so far have skipped / flipped / bailed!!
Rae Lakes is the bomb!
It was awesome to have it all to ourselves!!

Glen Pass sucks with no snow on it. Argh brutal. But the Rae Lakes area is stunning 😍
Rae Lakes was very neat indeed!

Ah, remember it well. Glen and Mather in alpine conditions definitely cause puckering.
