Agreed. It surprised the heck out of me. But also suddenly every oddity in his behavior made sense. After all he was only a MU character, playing a Starfleet Captain, trying to get home.
In their universe, a G type star (Earth type star) may have a slightly higher wavelength and brightness. Humans evolving in a higher intensity star would probably prefer low normal to low infrared spectra. That could be their version of climate change. Our Earth is hotter, theirs is brighter.
The pessimist in me believes Lorca went down with the Buran, and mirror Lorca used its destruction as a cover for his escape and his eyes. The optimist in me says the two Burans transposed because both were doing battle at the same time in interphasic space. So Lorca could be alive.
According to the most recent star trek discovery novel Drastic Measures Prime Lorca did switch with Mirror Lorca into the mirror universe. He is alive but he's being held in a top secret super-max prison. That's all it says weather or not it becomes canon or on screen, we'll have to wait and see.
It would explain why he was so rogue-like, and disobeyed orders a lot of the time. Since he grew up in the strict Terran Empire, then went across universes to a much more liberal Starfleet.
The mark of a good twist is a twist that leaves clues without totally revealing itself. The people that figured it out were the people actively looking for every little detail.
I loved that they fooled me (and that I did not look into any Theories while the show ran). I am too good at figuring out plots from just trailers and the like, wich makes the rest of the show/movie boring. I am going to rewatch it, going in with this knowledge and see how many hints I can spot.
I actually really liked Captain lorca's character it's unfortunate that they turned him into a two dimensional bad guy when they revealed who he was honestly they built him up and made him more complicated than that I feel that it would have been better where if he was conflicted with his own emotions because he realized that the prime universe and the people that he served with their rubbed off on him more than he thought and became a better Terran for it but he still has his own motivations but they turn him into a typical 80s action movie Bad Guy

In the original series, Kirk, Scotty, and Uhura were swapped with their counterparts when both vessels passed through a ionic nebula and were beamed up to those ships. Reason would show that the same instance happens with Lorca's respective ships running across a similar nebula at the exact same spot.
Say what you might about the apparent plot holes, "SJW" stuff, etc. But this show never fails to impress me with it's plot twists. The mirror universe episodes are by far the best in the season.
... What plot twists? The fact that Lorca is from MU has been blatantly telegraphed since episode 3. And Tyler being Voq? Same thing. In fact, the common complaint I keep encountering is how predictable this show is.
I had my suspicious, just like everyone else, obviously. But the way the show tells the story, I love, the way all the pieces fit together feels good. And how some twists happen so fast, i.e. Culber's death, which was something I wasn't expecting to happen so fast, as I would've expected a typical buildup.
"I know who you are Michael Burnham. I know exactly who you are." Let's be honest. While STD has decent continuous story arcs. They aren't quite Babylon 5 grade yet and probably never will be. Babylon 5 took 2 whole seasons to put all bits and pieces in the right spots, just so that shit could hit the fan in the third and fourth. In STD, everything happens so quickly as well as without the aforementioned preparation that you don't give a damn about anything or anybody.
NOW, if I were running Star Trek: Discovery, I'D do a mini-series telling the story of just how Lorca pulled off his Prime Universe deception. But, that's just me.
That would be great! Except for the plot hole where Lorca should've been dying in the prime universe when like Georgiou started dying when she became a member of discovery. Too many Trekkies would point that out and make it redundant...

Plus in season three when Georgiou was being diagnosed, it was explained that the mirror universe and the prime universe were closer together before discovery went into the future which could also explain why Georgiou didn't start dying until they arrived at the future. The fact that you mentioned plus the fact that the universe's were closer when Lorca was posing as prime Lorca were the reasons that him and Georgiou didn't die while in the prime universe. Smart.
I used to not be too fond of Star Trek: Discovery (because of the new look of Klingons and Klingon ships as well as Burnham apparently being Spock's half sister) but I'm really liking this Mirror Universe story arc.
yeah but the story unravels too fast. Star Wars could not create a tv series except animated because light saber jedi wielding masters make it impossible to create tv series. The live action sequence required to shoot in light saber fights requires athletes and complex choreography. The CGI team, crew and craftsmen need time to develop sets, recycle and use them to the fullest at a reasonable pace. Star treks strength like most strong entertainment franchise are its hardcore fans. And a new generation of fans must be molded for the franchise to continue to grow strong. Star trek should not treat each episode to be like a movie where the plot unravels so quickly, but rather a journey with random stories and episodes inserted by contributor writers, independent studio contributors and even take into account fan plot filler winning the largest polls. This is not like building an aircraft carrier people where their is a strict protocol and blueprint to be followed within a specific budget otherwise this will end up as a distinct appealing only to a single demographics the Yamato battle-cruiser journey only Japanese Asians will like. Star Trek must not end up pleasing the movie critics, fans matters more and the greatest fans are the one making and doing the series.
Honestly this twist really disappointed me. Lorca was my favorite character in this entire show up until this twist. He had such depth and intrigue to his character. You could tell he was really going through a lot of shit. I liked how different of a captain he was compared to others like Picard and Kirk. How he really did a lot of fucked up things but you fully understood why he did them even if you didn’t agree. His trauma clearly affected his thinking but even then, it didn’t stop him from always leading his crew and doing what he thought was best. This was arguably one of the best characters on the show. And then what do they do? Make him the villain and go back to good guy/bad guy tropes and get rid of the depth and subtlety to his character. It was really disappointing that they couldn’t see what a gold mine they had with this character and with Jason Issacs. It still bothers me to this day.

I just want to quote what I wrote about the captain after episode 3 of season 1: "The captain seems to be a maniac to be honest." In my review of episode 4: "During the last episode i already thought that the captain is a maniac. My suspicions have been confirmed. You can see and hear that he likes war. And playing the screams of dying people to the whole crew? Definitely the signs of a healthy mind." So how is it surprising to anyone that he is in fact a bad guy?
not surprising that he is in fact a bad guy, but was surprising that he was in fact from the Mirror Universe. I was predicting the Discovery herself (not just Lorca, but most of her crew too) would be the antagonists. I am still suspecting some Section 31 in here too
It was so obvious. All the twists in this series were very predictable. But it is very well written, I mean how the story got there. The acting is flawless, the visuals stunning, the music so engaging. Best Trek since TOS.
The twists were predictable because everyone keeps spending their time on social media and message boards where everyone is talking about every possible outcome before the show is finished. There is no possible way to be unpredictable when everyone is already predicting everything beforehand. Social Media has destroyed the possibility of shows being truly surprising anymore

This show has really fallen from grace of late, but mirror impostor Lorca has been their greatest home run. It’s a shame they couldn’t flesh out his story another episode or two, and that we’ll likely never know beyond a paragraph in a book what really happened to Prime Lorca.
Every Season, Burnham ends up being someones key to somewhere. Season 1: Lorca to get onto the Emperors Ship Season 2: Control to get to the Sphere data (for a spell). To quote Butters from South Park: "Can I not be the Key?"

because the writers didn't think of it yet. Though... DS9 was pretty darkly lit, and they simply re-used the Defiant sets without having to spend time or money on changing the lighting. Hell, even the display screens were the same (which made no sense at all, but again... budget and time)
No, in Mirror Darkly the angoizer made there randomly targeted neuron clusters and in TOS it's once again looks quite different with almost no visual effects (except what was added in the Bluray remasters).
Light Sensitivity for Humans from The Mirror Universe was never mentioned or shown on TOS, wuth the Mirror Enterprise being brightly lit, or on DS9, so why is it here?
Shima Trek, don't you Think its very odd that peopel who are Light Sensitive operate on very well lit ships? Because the EMpire's ships in DS9 were not dark, and the TOS Enterprise in the Mirror Universe had very bright lights. So I'd think it would come up.
CMDR, I suspect its just a retcon to make Discovery's story work, and to make the Mirror Universe Humans more Evil as they are "of the Dark"... but I still find it cheap. I had no problem with Lorca's eyes being damaged in an explosion. That should have been all it was.
It is the first time explicitly mentioned yes, but you will notice that the Terran locations in DS9 (Terran rebellion bases, Terran ships like the ISS Defiant, and the Terran controlled Terok Nor), and in ENT are actually dimly lit. And on the USS Defiant in ENT's "In a Mirror Darkly", they intentionally have to make the lighting lower because Mirror Archer squints when they first turn the lights on. So it is a retcon that builds off of the foundations of earlier setting building of the Mirror Universe, and not all retcons are bad things.
Seems more "movie" like than realistic. Very dramatic. Original and TNG was more "down to earth." The uniforms aren't very attractive. But I'm sure it's got some good to it. There is "a lot" going on at once.
One of the best reveals I’ve ever seen. SJWs occasionally stumble upon an awesome character design, which they always seem to eliminate as fast as possible... case in point: Lorca was dead by the next episode.
Is he a villain, though? He tried to overthrow Evil Space Romans, helped the Federation survive a Klingon onslaught, and has so far proven to be a very compassionate and strong Starfleet Captain. My hope is that he returns to Captain the Discovery - he's still the right man for the job.
He rebelled against an evil empire ruled by a tyrant. He used the others sure and he will have to answer for that but I wouldn't call him a villain just yet. Now if he only did it to take over as the tyrant leader then things will be different, but for now we have no idea.

JAnx01 truthfully it was the dull first two seasons. I'm as big a fan as they come, but I couldn't sit through that and I missed out on the last two seasons which I hear are phenomenal.

The working theory is that he died at the Binary Stars. We'll know for sure soon, I think.

It was so obvious. All the twists in this series were very predictable. But it is very well written, I mean how the story got there. The acting is flawless, the visuals stunning, the music so engaging. Best Trek since TOS.

And now people are saying that season 4 threat of veger from the motion picture and the fact that they went this route in season 1 has me believing that's not impossible that veigar is the threat in season 4 but I have also heard Borg to the species that sent the whale prope to spere builders to species 8472. This show has really fallen from grace of late, but mirror impostor Lorca has been their greatest home run. It’s a shame they couldn’t flesh out his story another episode or two, and that we’ll likely never know beyond a paragraph in a book what really happened to Prime Lorca.
Every Season, Burnham ends up being someones key to somewhere.

People call it predictable because THEY WON'T GET OFF MESSAGE BOARDS AND SOCIAL MEDIA. how can you have a truly unpredictable story when you are constantly talking with people offering every conceivable outcome there could possibly be? Heaven, why can´t he be my Captain? I always loose. I loved Admiral Marcus from "Star Trek into Darkness" (ok he was not technicly a Captain) , I totaly loved Captain Pike and now when another, for a Change with a bit more Spirit for the Dark, Comes along like Lorca, I loose again.
Pike has easily been the best thing about Discovery season 2
Looking back, he told Ash Tyler to "come back [from the mission] with Burnham or don't come back at all" and I was thinking "Wow, that's a fucked-up thing for a Starfleet Captain to say, how did this asshole ever get a command?"

because the writers didn't think of it yet. Though... DS9 was pretty darkly lit, and they simply re-used the Defiant sets without having to spend time or money on changing the lighting. Hell, even the display screens were the same (which made no sense at all, but again... budget and time)

No, in Mirror Darkly the angoizer made there randomly targeted neuron clusters and in TOS it's once again looks quite different with almost no visual effects (except what was added in the Bluray remasters).

Light Sensitivity for Humans from The Mirror Universe was never mentioned or shown on TOS, wuth the Mirror Enterprise being brightly lit, or on DS9, so why is it here?

Because the EMpire's ships in DS9 were not dark, and the TOS Enterprise in the Mirror Universe had very bright lights.
So I'd think it would come up.
Medical science may have come up with a way to correct light sensitivity in the Mirror Universe.
CMDR, I suspect its just a retcon to make Discovery's story work, and to make the Mirror Universe Humans more Evil as they are "of the Dark"... but I still find it cheap. I had no problem with Lorca's eyes being damaged in an explosion. That should have been all it was.
It is the first time explicitly mentioned yes, but you will notice that the Terran locations in DS9 (Terran rebellion bases, Terran ships like the ISS Defiant, and the Terran controlled Terok Nor), and in ENT are actually dimly lit. And on the USS Defiant in ENT's "In a Mirror Darkly", they intentionally have to make the lighting lower because Mirror Archer squints when they first turn the lights on. So it is a retcon that builds off of the foundations of earlier setting building of the Mirror Universe, and not all retcons are bad things.

I love Star Trek Dicovery! It’s my favorite Star Trek show and one of my favorite shows in general.
Seems more "movie" like than realistic. Very dramatic. Original and TNG was more "down to earth." The uniforms aren't very attractive. But I'm sure it's got some good to it. There is "a lot" going on at once.

JAnx01 truthfully it was the dull first two seasons. I'm as big a fan as they come, but I couldn't sit through that and I missed out on the last two seasons which I hear are phenomenal.
