For those who are wondering why FF main titles have greadually step away from turn base gameplay, It is important to keep things in perspective and consider the following:
Yakuza like a Dragon has sold more than 490,000 copies (as reported on October 2022). Before its launch the total amount of sales the franchise had accumulated was 2.8 million units among all the games.
Dragon Quest XI has sold over 6.5 million copies which expand several versions and ports for multiple platforms.
Persona 5 has sold 8.3 million units globally but that is including the original version, the Royal version (3.3 million across all platforms), Persona 5 Strikers and P5: Dancing in Starlight.
For those series which until now they have a more niche franchise, that is huge and impressive numbers in comparisson. But for a more mainstream series like FF, which FF XV has sold 10 million despite all its problems and beign in way less platforms (like Nintendo Switch) not so much.
I am not saying that a turn-based FF game with a AAA budget could be done in the future, but FF XVI will be an action game for a reason.
That's why he's so relatable and the golden boy for SE. He doesn't shy away and he's very up front with the fans. It's easy to respect him in an industry full of deceitful snakes.

The confidence Square has with showing this game off makes me think it’s going to live up to its hype. They know what they have on their hands and it looks amazing so far.
This man has single handedly saved Square
It's also a huge indicator that the game is DONE. Not just a shippable product, but absolutely DONE and polished.
Absolutely. They never would've dreamed of doing this with Forspoken or Avengers.
This looks like a GOTY contender and it's not even out yet.
Yeah most games that aren't finished try to close it up by selling hype and promises. FF16 let's it's own finished product sell the hype themselves. In fact they even go so far as shooting down signs of overhyping to keep the expectations manageable. That's expectations management at it's best.
You gotta admit, SE is actually on their fucking game again with 7R and XVI. I know this has the potential to bounce once it releases, but Yoshi P has done such an astronomical job on just about everything he touches that I really think XVI may be one of the best FF experiences we've ever had and that's coming from someone who has played literally every FF game to date. This could be the dawn of a new era for FF and SE if XVI ends up being as good as it looks and Rebirth just around the corner after that. I haven't been hype like this for SE as a company since the 90s.
Too early saying that. This all thanks to Yoshi-p. Remember Forspoken?
They are some how are the Schrödinger’s cat of game companies. They have amazing highs(ffxvi, ff7 remake) and crazy lows (forspoken, NFT controversy) and no in between. You only know once you open the box and start playing.
@@mafiefakbar5791 you’re talking about a completely different studio. SE was the publisher, not the developer of Forspoken. The only 2 games this studio made was FFXV and Forspoken and have since been shut down.
@@jjkurtz03 How about Avengers?
@@mafiefakbar5791 once again they were the publisher, the developer was Crystal Dynamics. I’m not saying SE wasn’t involved with these games or that they didn’t see financial harm (Avengers in particular cost them a lot of money), but this game is definitely a different story.
You can see his open they are being about the game and concerns fans have. They aren’t trying to hide or give marketing talk offs to the concerns fans have had of recent footage.
There is always the chance that any game could flop, but you can probably get pretty safely XVI and Rebirth will both be very good. SE can’t afford any more big flops like Avengers or Forspoken which is why they are hedging their bets and shutting down studios that haven’t performed well.

That's because that he isn't just a translator, that's Micheal Christopher Koji Fox, he's apart of the main development team for both FF: XVI and XIV. Him, Yoshida and Soken have been working together for over a decade on both projects and are genuinely the closest of friends.

Screw remakes... let's embrace new experiences
@@sheriffdraws8789 There’s nothing wrong with remakes improving upon older works by taking advantage of new tech and better dev experience.
Not only does a GOOD remake update games for a newer audience who are used to certain QoL features (which are missing from older titles), but it also builds upon and delivers the original dev’s vision of the project without being hamstrung by weaker tech that they were forced to work with.
It’s hard to play the Dead Space or Shadow of the Colossus remake and not feel like these enhanced versions fulfill all that promise that the original titles had. Being able to seamlessly traverse the Ishimura or gallop across the Forbidden Lands in 4K are features I wish WE had years ago…

another thing on the accessory stuff, using easy moe accessories uses a slot. now that wont matter early game i’m sure, probs only like “take less damage” and such for early accessories, but for this type of game… you can bet your ass there will be “perfect dodge and next attack does a bazillion damage” or “damage increases the more attacks you land without being hit” as well as “lower defence, more attack power” types etc so it incentivises getting better so you can use the slots for stronger accessories, which a cool side effect over just having it in the accessibility menu.
Clive in his 30s looks like a dad who's raising his 4yo daughter alone after he lost his wife after she gave birth and now he's doing some underground fight to get money so he can get money to raise his little girl.
Don't ask me why this is so specific.
Dang I think it’s dope they have an arcade mode where you can go for a high score and they even mentioned having an online leaderboard. I think it’s awesome when mostly single player games add extra fun content like that
So basically this is a Naruto/Final Fantasy mash up where each nation has its on Jinchuriki/Tailed Beast? I'm in.
Also with political issues like war and the control of limited resources. Plus the occasional findings from an ancient civilization.
Lol I'm really hyped for this game but I actually have a laugh at the idea that this is just European Naruto
Some sort of that
More like attack on titan. Your pretty much on a quest to take all the titan shifters abilities.
34:25 that was such a Devil May Cry 5 sprint startup and I love it.
*Edit* Yeah Max said the same thing right after but I'm keeping this comment.
This game doesn’t have the lead Devil May Cry and Dragon’s Dogma designer, that’s Yoichiro Ikeda, and as far as I know he’s still at Capcom. Ryota Suzuki is working on this, but he was only the lead designer on the Dark Arisen DLC.
As far as I know he’s also the only DMC and Dragon’s Dogma designer working this.
He has also worked on:
- Jojo's Bizarre Adventure for PSX
- Rival Schools
- SF Alpha 3
- Dragon's Dogma
- SF IV
- Monster Hunter World
Always fun when Koji and Yoshi-P are together for the presentation.
I can’t believe ff15 is soon ganna be 7 years old and we are already talking about 16. Time flys. Anyways this game looks phenomenal. Easily will be the best number ff game in a long time. Much better than the ps3-ps4 era final fantasys
This showcase was exceptional as was Max your commentary. Your passion and enthusiasm shine through every vid. Cheers!
If there's one thing YoshiP is known for, is that he will slide some cheeky ass shots at the community. But here's the thing: We love it. Because it's like 99 times out of 100 true.
Yoshi P bringing the FF14 Live Letter presentations to FF16 definitely is the right choice. Great presentation!
Accessibility is not so much about lowering difficulty but to give more people the option to acutally play the game - ofc not mutually exclusive. Factually speaking most of disabilities happen during the lifetime of a human. Most people are not born with it. The WHO estimate that 16% of the world population have disabilities. Imaging having some accident, losing a hand or fingers, and not be able to play a game/franchise you like because of that. That would actually a bummer. So stuff like this is actually pretty awesome from devs. Happy to see it.
I get that. But outside of say arcade mode, there's basically no benefit in playing in harder difficult. As max said, there needs to be a REASON why people should be playing normal difficult if they don't have a physical disability, and quite frankly there's none outside of "I want a challenge", aka don't equip no timely accessibility. I am dissapointed in that aspect.
@@awsomeboy360 There's no reason to play harder difficulty in most games, what?
You do them for the satisfaction of it.
Yoshi is a god dev, he's not only amazing when working on games but talking to the community and people worldwide he's a legend, actual king
Also Koji is amazing too
Love Max’s reaction that I have to watch this multiple time.
I feel in love with the developer watching this... so much charm, transparency, and understanding his role and as ours as consumers
I feel like people have been unnecessarily harsh on QTEs in games. Like, they are just a button or two during a cutscene it's not the end of the world. Besides I like the whole "press a button and character does super cool special move that they can't do in normal gameplay".
for real i played the god of war games on ps3 the QTEs are awesome. Plus people who say QTEs are just stupid like even if you fail the damn thing you can remember what the button.
Anyone that has played Yakuza games can tell you that QTEs can be the hypest shit ever if done right
The issue is how it's implemented QTEs can be great in my opinion God of War 3 is the most exciting action game of all times and the awsome QTEs are a big part of that
In XVI's case the QTEs are not a good QTE design tho for two reasons one the game is stoping for the QTE wich takes the best part of it wich is making it feel like it's a seamless part of the experience and the second one the screen gets dark for the prompts as the prompt is blocking the screen wich is only aggravating the situation even more
👍
One thing FF14's liveletters have prepared YoshiP for is community management. He's really good at connecting with the fanbase and presenting info.
He’s also a gamer himself which connects him with the players. It’s also how he saved XIV by implementing features from other popular western MMO’s, he didn’t have the SE hubris many in the company had at that time.
This is going to be epic. FF going back to the roots!
Those were desert chocobos I think in the background they had an earthy brown color to them.Which makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint.
Big ff12 fan so I’m a bit excited world layout wise
One thing, personally I think that makes Yoshi-P so successful is that he understands the importance of the community and community perspective in marketing.
and that him and his teams have the actual game-making skills to back it up. I'm sure most game producers would love to be like this, but for games that are launching hastily, filled with bugs, coming from a rough development, being open like this is carreer suicide. So double kudos that he is such a great planner that he can do this for all games he launches
I definitely would have loved if the QTEs didn't almost completely halt whatever was on the screen. That alone would have gone a long way to improving it.
I don't mind it. Sometimes my mind doesn't register qtes fast.
I like the QTEs!
I love that Final Fantasy numbers font
shout out to the translator, he did a great job!
If I'm not mistaken, for FFXVI, there's a former member of DMC on the project and aiding in the battle creation. So the silhouette choices might have been influenced because of that.
Yes, Ryota Suzuki is the battle director. He has also worked on:
- Marvel Vs. Capcom 2
- Monter Hunter World
- Dragon's Dogma
- Jojo's fighting game for PSX
- Rival Schools
- SF Alpha 3
- SF 4
- Darkstalkers Resurrection
Finally some footage outside of dark castles and swamps and it looks even better than I could have hoped!
@exoo Shut up.
The translator is great. We don't always get such smooth translation, with some character.
Koji's the localization lead for the game so the passion makes sense, he's also been doing presentations with Yoshi P for like 10 years in FFXIV
23:35 Pretty sure those are Bahamut's wings. I wonder how that's going to happen considering that's my favorite summon of all time.
Bahamut is my favorite summon too but im not loving its design in XVI to be honest and im also more into the more melee based skills than what i have seen from Bahamut so far
Max, I know you've probably got a thousand answers on stream and in these comments, but the last character on that dominants page is the Dominant for Odin, which I can't shake the feeling is going to be our last Eikon fight.
I aspire to the level of presentation that any presentation that Yoshida presents. Nothing equals to when he failed like 5 times for the latest Leap of Faith for ffxiv and they just take it in stride.
I hope the doubts can be resolved with the FF XVI, which will be probably available two weeks before the full version is launched.
@1:07:30 Huge Props to you Max. Only about 5 of us got that reference, but it means a lot to us chilling in Labyrinth of Onzozo
Ose and his ever iconic Cheeto Jacket...
