    It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic Austerity Edition automotive UA-cam experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for £100 or less in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
    This time, as we test a 2005 Renault Clio 1.2 16V Expression, we complain about headroom, deal with a noisy wheel bearing, apologise for excessive adhesives on the interior plastics, show a very clean engine bay and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

    I've owned my 2003 phase 2, 1.4 dynamique for 5 years now. Purchased for £70 due to a failed uch (body control module) repaired for £85 and it has never put a foot wrong. I've slightly modified and upspeced it with parts from a sport and I've even owned other cars but still jump in the clio and it never fails to disappoint

      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому +1

      That's crazy! It's even cheaper than this one was (although prices of cars in general had risen by 2022, so I suppose that is to be expected). They seem to be very cheap to modify as well!

    I just bought one a couple weeks ago with a 1.6 16v engine and it's a really fast and fun car to drive. It's small but spacious enough for groceries and carrying my friends.

      If you can find a good one of these (they aren't terribly expensive), then they do make a lot of sense. The 1.6 would probably be quite lively. Thank you ever so much indeed for watching and commenting!

    Very good review. They are still very popular little cars, and are lasting very well with the newest now about 15 years old. This may have been the only car in the Renault range to not come with an enormous card for a key. And despite being quite an aged design by the time this car was made, it was also the safest car in its class right up until the mk3 introduction later that year.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому +1

      Yes, you see lots of these still around for some reason! The fact that they were made until 2008 for the UK market probably has something to do with it. The simple key was a big relief for someone like me. Thank you for watching, sir!

    I ran a 2003 Dynamique with a 1.2 16v engine, very economical and fairly zippy unless you have 5 passengers. The engine has a cam belt. Apart from some small electrical issues and the sunroof rattled and leaked because of the seal, very cheap vehicle to run. Also very safe with 4 airbags and abs fitted as standard

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому +1

      Yes, they must be cheap to run and service. The engine lasted until at least 2017 in various Renault and Dacia models, so I can't imagine parts are difficult to find. This sunroof has also been sealed up, and electrical issues are common, but otherwise there is not a lot to say.

    Ahh, this takes me back. We owned a prefacelift 1.6 5 door Etoile for about 14 years after buying it at 3 years old. Towards the end the only problems I remember was water getting in due to blocked drainge holes in the bonnet and the clouded headlights.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому +2

      Yes, cloudy headlamps was such a common thing on cars of that age. It still is! The 1.6 must be quite nippy if this is just the 1.2. Thank you for watching, sir.

    Tres bon! Can't complain for £100. I appreciate Renaults for their ride comfort. My parents had a courtesy car mark 1 Clio in 1997 when their Vauxhall Carlton was hit from behind (surprised it wasn't written off).
    BMW also had a habit of not changing the wiper setup for right hand drive units for a time, the lazy swines. Seems to no longer be the case: a neighbour's 19 reg 118i has the correct pattern for rhd.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting

    A good video that brought back memories. I bought a new Clio DCI 'Extreme' 3dr in 2002. Just 65hp from it's non intercooled diesel (sorry to talk about it) turbo motor. It replaced a 60hp Polo 19D but felt like it had another 50hp not 5hp. It came up with seat/airbag warning light when a few days old , "they are all coming through like that sir", then at about 1 year smoke came from steering column. The car continued to drive OK and was fixed under warrenty. Apart from that it was 100% reliable and only need servcing every 19,000 miles or 2 yrs which ever came 1st. So at 56,000 miles 5yrs it had only been serviced twice....
    The car was well specced for '02 super-mini with climate control, very nice met blue paint, alloys etc. Very nippy and economical.
    After 5 yrs and 70 or 80,000 miles it was due a 'big' service - timeing belt, coolant change, brake fluid change, a MOT with 4xnew tyres etc so I traded it for a new Fiesta TDCI, the equivalent Clio having grown to the much more expensive and bigger MK3 version. It is one of the few cars I should have continued to run for a few more years

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому

    Good evening Mr Lloyd, I do love a renault clio sir, I actually have one at the moment myself, a mk2 phs 1 T reg 1999, it's a 1.6 sport/rsi it's one of the rarer models and don't believe they sold very many, and was pretty much made redundant by the 172 being much more focused sport model, anyway very much enjoyed your review sir, thank you.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому +1

      That must be a very rare car these days, sir! That should still be quite rapid if it is the 1.6. Glad you enjoyed the video!

    What a bargain.
    I owned two brand new MK2 Clio back in the day. A pre facelift 2000 Clio 1.2 8v Grande and an extremely early post facelift Clio 1.2 16v Sport Dynamique on a Y registration. The facelift model was released about a month before the change to the new style of registrations.
    I loved both but at the time the revised dashboard and twin headlamps felt like a big upgrade. Those rear cupholders are big enough for a 2ltr bottle.
    Both of the cars I had suffered with creaky sunroofs.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому +2

      Yes, the new dashboard and facelifted front end on the Phase II are quite an improvement, I must say. The sunroofs seem to be best avoided from what I understand. The D4F in this car seems to have plenty of performance for everyday driving, despite it only having 75 bhp.

    • @markonmotoring
      @markonmotoring Рік тому

      @@lloydvehicleconsulting Yes at the time I felt the car was pretty sprightly with its 75hp but then it's a light car. The 1.4 16v I think may have been the pick of the bunch because it offered almost as much performance as the 1.6 16v but was only half as high an insurance group.
      In phase 2 guise I think all but entry level Authentique models and perhaps RS Cup.had a sunroof of either pop up or tilt and slide design. Initially you had to go up the range to get AC or climate control but later became optional in most trim levels.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому +1

      Yes, this car originally had air conditioning, but with that non-air conditioning panel it has been disabled. The 1.4 8V engines based on the Energy unit are surprisingly torquey.

    Excellent little review Sir, my neighbour at my last house his son and daughter both had version of this Clio at the same time, he always said after 3 years with Renault's you got shot of them, due to electrics but apparently their clios only had minor issues in their ownership.
    For £100 if it gives you a years motoring I would not be complaining about owning this little Clio.
    I think I follow Hayden on Instagram.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому +2

      It's insane how cheap this was. Haydon is very happy with it, although that wheel bearing was really annoying! The electrics are known for some problems, but they are most certainly a bargain when bought for this sort of money.
