You have to check out "One" with the video, For Whom the Bell Tolls is another great Metallica song.
Aye. Bell tolls is good one.
Ah, the One video has a butchered version of the song
@@thetomgibson which version would you suggest then?
@@maxis5650 The album version
No, the video version ruins the song.
Song is about addiction. Drugs are the master and the user is the puppet. Saying drugs control you.
This days this song got completely new meaning and even lirycs matchin much more to the situation. #Killemall
@Ocean Blues Very good observation, my take is similar but slightly different. My take is when the clean part starts, that represents the user finally trying to go clean and stop the addiction, and he does for awhile but then when the song gets fast, frantic and heavy again, that represents relapse and how when you relapse, the addiction gets even worse and the spiral downward is even worse.
Wouldn't it be about a heroin addiction... I can understand the cocaine reference but the opening of the song
@@slzash It is about heroin in fact one the lyrics says needlework. If you google the meaning of the song they go into detail. Gotta love Metallica!!!
@@panthertrain1984 also before kirks solo its says master master you promised only lies is the drugs making you feel good originally and the laughter part is the drug laughing at you for coming back to it after trying to be clean
4:22 "This is the only time in the history of life I'll let a white man yell at me to obey my master"
Sir, you owe me a new keyboard due to all the Coke Zero that just shot out of my nose.
I'm literally drinking coke zero while watching this lol
I laughed so hard I'm glad I had my hands empty cuz I would surely break something out of my spasm laughter. Although this song was not about white masters, but drugs

This song changed my entire life. I wore this album as a shirt I asked what to listen too on it. My mother and Father said "the entire album". On the way home, Master Of Puppets got me into metal and my mind was completely fucking blown!!!
same man. I mean I was catching them back in the early 90s and the dude at the record store (those existed back then) actually gave me a used tape (those existed too) and just told me to "hit play and hold on" saw them live with Guns n Roses in 1992 and that show was still one of the most amazing shows ive ever seen live. changed my teenage years for sure
For me, it was Wake Up Dead by Megadeth... Been playing guitar ever since.
I've had the pleasure of seeing Metallica play this live in person. This song, no pun intended, is a masterpiece. However hearing it with 50,000 people screaming "MASTER! MASTER!" in unison is a whole other level.
@Jacob Garard If they don't play Master of Puppets then Creeping Death is definitely a good substitute.
Been there, done that! One of the greatest concerts I've ever seen! I will say it again, LEGENDARY!
I've seen them 4 times. I agree with you. being among 14,000+ people all at the same time banging their heads and yelling Master! Master! Cant even describe the feeling. I only can say WOW! Love it!
@@madcow9597 Nice. I've only seen them the one time but it's definitely one I'll never forget.
Ditto. Best experience ever
Song describes addiction in intimate detail. I was a puppet to alcohol for years. Homeless, imprisoned, deathly ill, and debasing myself for years until I cut the strings. Thank God!
Hope you're doing well today Jefffrey ❤
@@Cris-by8zv, I am doing much better these days. Thank you. I hope you are doing well in your life as well.
@@jeffreydillingham7630 I am very well, thank you. :)
Proud of you man
@@maxxie5500, thank you for your encouragement. I give all the glory to God.
I think the biggest appeal of these metal reaction videos is the viewer also feeling like they're listening to it for the first time with someone who also enjoys it. Respect
same ting fam
When it says "chop your breakfast on a mirror", what do you think that means? Razor blade...white powder... I think you get it. The song is about addiction.
More specifically cocaine addiction
Yes.
Well he totally missed that lyric so he doesn't really have a reaction on what this song is talking about.
@@tonipowell632 addictions in general. Other lines reference other drug use. James was more of an alcoholic than anything.
@@Big_Poppa_Bear Ha ha yeah that was comic timing for sure. 👍
This dude had his hand over his heart for Hetfield's solo like it was the National Anthem. Now that's metal.
That wasnt hetfield's solo. That was Kirk.
Bruh that was kirk
Bruh that was kirk
Bruh that was kirk
bruh that was kirk
I'm 47 year old black man. I discovered Metallica when I was your age. They changed my life. Get into them
I saw them live in 87 the bass drum actually pushed me in the chest.
Was that in the Monsters of Rock tour??
When ole boy completely STOPS when he hears that solo...that's why I watch youtube videos.
this solo in this song is amazing. it is by far one of my favorite solos from metallica
Lol he was having an eargassim!!
The guitar solo is the most emotionally intense part of any rock or metal song for me.
I thought he had a stroke. 😂
@@nckhed Truly beautiful art will do that to ya--haha.
You were close. It wasn't white guy screaming at you. It was white powder.
White flour!
Cocainneeeeeee
How else do you come up with the lyrics "I am the table"?
The needlework part in the lyrics makes me think heroin
@@Noneyabiz001 Good point. IMO this could also refer to really any drug. Meth, pot, acid, you name it, it'll get you.
His reaction to Kirk’s solo is gold lmao 8:18
That's Kirk for ya. That's pretty much all he does. That, and I remember he was the one that wrote the Enter Sandman riff.
It's so pure and enjoyable getting to see young bloods like you discover staples of metal for the first time. It was a pleasure.
im 14 and i play electric guitar and it got me into metallica!
Needlework the way……chop your breakfast on a mirror, the song is about drug addiction, the drug being the master and you being the puppet. In the 80s parents were screaming this music was evil while Metallica was telling us to stay away from drugs. Lol
80's parents completely missed the point of this song in particular, had they even bothered to read the lyrics as opposed to having a knee-jerk reaction to the music itself, they'd have gotten the message of this song
I just recently listened to Ozzy's "Crazy Train" with the lyrics included. I immediately thought what a cool song it was, with a very positive message.
heroin and cocaine
And slayer was telling me the evils of mankind 😂
Metallica were the real DARE, if you think about it.
The song structure is like the simulation of addiction. It’s all happy and then goes into a laid back high feeling. Then slowly gets more and more chaos until complete carnage
Now that's just disturbing
The interlude was written with that in mind. It was supposed to represent the initial high and then the crash (heavy part at the end) of using drugs.
Quagmire
Thanks, quagmire
Thank's Quagmire
Fear not my dude, Jimi Hendrix was a lefty player with a right handed guitar. He was a legend! You should absolutely check out his cover of The National Anthem.
He played it like it was a leftie guitar tho! Just didn‘t use leftie Strats at the first place bcs they were too expensive back then
good friend of mine is a musician that plays a righthanded guitar even though he is a lefty. honestly works well for him using his dominant hand on the frets.
@@Tanx33 I agree. I am a lefty, which actually makes me more comfortable and easily play notes in the fretboard... The downside fir this is that I had difficulty picking with my right hand, especially for fast riffs. But plucking is actually a easier for lefties surprisingly than picking in my own opinion.
A true metal classic. I enjoyed hearing it with you!
“This is the only time in the history of life that I’ll let a white man yell at me to obey my master” I’m dead bruh😂😂
Btw love to see ya wanting to play the guitar! Play it however’s comfortable🤙
That's a bad advice. He should get a left-handed guitar.
Edit: If he's gonna play it like a right-handed person (not upside down), it's okay to learn it that way too.
@@santacloud01 He should play however it feels natural to him, just like learning which side of the plate to bat from in baseball. Hendrix played a right-handed guitar upside down. Duane Allman and Mark Knopfler are both lefties who played/play guitar right-handed.
@@chrisd7047 Oh, you got me wrong. If he learns a right-handed guitar like a right-handed person (not holding it upside down like Jimi Hendrix), it's totally fine. But he shouldn't learn the guitar upside down if he has the chance, that's what I meant. If he does that, he can't take lessons or watch videos and learn. He has to learn it by himself and I don't think anyone would want that in 2021 where there are free lessons everywhere. Yes, Jimi did it but he's one of the best players in the world world and he didn't know that he was playing it "wrong". If he knew, he wouldn't learn that way, I'm sure.
It’s about drug addiction. the master is the cocaine
He should obey like all you morons do and stfu about it. 😉
So this song is about addiction told from the perspective of the addiction itself. The first part is the anxiousness and need with its repeating melodies and lyrics. The second part is the "High", the addict gets his fix and is floating but it doesn't last long as the beat increases. The third part is from the addicts point of view, his realization that this is ruining his life and his hopelessness in breaking the cycle, and the chaos that is his life as we move into the fourth part. The fourth part the addiction has taken over once again and the cycle starts over. It ends with his inner demons laughter. Truly a masterpiece.
No cap best summary of Master of Puppets ever.
Absolutely true. You wrapped the song up very well. Obvs wasted on some
Damn
Music transcends politics. It transcends skin color and gender. It brings people together no matter their ideologies or backgrounds. And I am very happy to see you rocking out to it, bro!
One thing that makes the riff difficult to play is it's all down-picking. James is not only the riff god but the down-picking god as well. The only way I can down-pick rapidly and for long periods is if I'm on a sugar high XD
Kirk doesn't get enough credit. He follows the rhythm guitar note for note when they play live... also all downpicked. They're both rhythm gods. Jaymz is just a brilliant song writer.
Colombian sugar?
@@pthibault630 I noticed that when watching one of their live clips, they really were playing note for note together, that was pretty nutty
Don't pick down, pick out eliminates that semi circle motion that slows down your down picks
@@UA-camcanbitemyhairybanger No it’s literally how Hetfield plays it it sounds better down picking and not as choppy.
His reaction on Kirk Hammetts solo is absolutely amazing he's like WTF lmaooo 😁😁
I have the same reaction every time :)
That's how non guirarists hear it. However Kirk is quite weak as guitarist. Metallica solos and Megadeth solos are ground and sky
@@hefenzy Might not be that impressive in a technical sense, but the emotional effect in this song is spot on. It's the right sound at the right time.
@HEFENZY bro don’t hate on Hammett bro, he a god among men
@@codymiller1026 Let them say he is weak they will never get any close to his legacy
That “acoustic guitar” part on the song is actually a clean channel guitar. It’s an electric guitar that runs through a clean channel (also, an electric guitar isn’t always gonna be distorted when you plug it into the amplifier. You have a clean channel, a distortion channel, and other effects like chorus, tremolo, etc.) that makes it have that sound.
the kid has some nice guitar he doesn't even know how to hold it what's that tell you you got to start playing it
@@fredtello yeah.
Jojo if you write with your right hand then that guitar is fine for you. If you Write with your left then you need "left" handed guitar or need to flip it like Jimi Hendrix. Try Sanitarium off that same album or go older like Four Horseman or Am I evil off the kill them all album. (Speaking of hendrix you should try Machine Gun)
Yes you can play acoustic parts on the clean channel using an electric guitar. I do it all the time.
@@larryherrera5194 My girlfriend and my best friend both write with their left hands yet both prefer using right handed guitars.
One of my favorite songs ever. Something about it hit me hard from the first time I heard it so many years ago. Sadly I lost my brother to an overdose Christmas of '21. I know how it controlled him. It was his master. Now this song brings a tear to my eyes. I still love it, just for different reasons.

First time watching one of your videos and I really liked it. Great, authentic reaction to a song that's not "easy" metal. It's a great song and about something serious, but also really full of a lot of musical surprises and changes and ideas. Thanks for taking the time to listen to it.
"This is the only time I'll let a white man yell at me to obey my master!" I almost fell out of my chair laughing, no hyperbole
I had to laugh. ' This drum beat is awkward " Jojo, your not the only one who says Lars drumming is awkward

Yo, this is what I live for. Music transcends generations and cultures. This is by no means the best song ever even for metal, but there's always a common ground and it's hella cool seeing someone experience and really feel what the music was supposed to be about.
I love how u got wrapped in the music but go back and read this songs words.. this is truly one of metal's masterpieces
The fact that you DON'T know what it means to "chop your breakfast in a mirror," is a good thing. It means you aren't into things you ought not be into. Good for you, and your parents! 😁👍
I always felt the song gave a glimpse as to where the band was at in reference to their heroine and alcohol use. This is the early Metallica that everyone loved, but if they had kept this pace up half of the bad would be dead. RIP Cliff Burton...
Cliff did die in a traffic accident in Sweden... not an drug overdose... just to be clear
I'm 49, and I've been listening to Master of Puppets since I was 15. Metallica got me into music, guitars, drums, bass, eventually audio recording school, interning at recording studios in Boston, Selling high end home and car audio, basically half of my life and professions.
Cant wait for this dude to finds Pantera. I think he'd really enjoy Walk.
Or anthrax for that matter
Yes!
Or lamb of god

He will filp out if he hears 5 mins alone!
You need to check out these Metallica songs: sad but true, the unforgiven, and one
And after he checks out Metallica's Sad But True he can check out The HU's cover of Sad But True....they're a Mongolian folk metal band just in case some people haven't heard of them yet..which is almost impossible these days
nooo lol why is everyone talling him to check out crap metallica check out seek and destroy whiplash creeping death throw that stupid black album in the trash
@@corvettemustang1 We get it, you have a favourite Metallica period. But dude, there is no such thing as "Crap Metallica". Even St Anger has it's moments and is much better than what a lot of other metal bands get famous on.
What about "Fade it black"? Its one of my favorits
They have way better songs than that one is good though
Glad I found your channel... 3rd video I've watched today. keep rockin youngin'
I like how your heart just stopped the moment the solo started 🤣
I like what you said about the song having an unorthodox beat! Almost the entire song is counted in 4/4 or common time but the fourth measure of each bar in the verses is 21/32, or really close to 5/8. Metallica aren’t exactly prog gods so they likely didn’t plan it out to be exactly 21/32 but they did purposefully cut the last measures of the verse bars unexpectedly short to give the verses a more tense feel.
They are prog gods. Who are you to say otherwise missing the 3/4 measures?
They switch times in songs a lot.
Makes it difficult to learn if you're a beginner.
I think you're right when you mentioned it wasn't planned, iirc Lars said that the complex 21/32 was not really taken into consideration and that they just did this to scare people lol
honestly, it kinda simulates the "nodding" of opiates in a way.
dude, you are hilarious! 😂 It’s nice to see predominantly hip hop fans reacting to, and appreciating, Metallica...their lyrics are very meaningful in all their songs
Man that is classic will never get old. I just got my driver license and one of my friends introduced my to this song when it came out. Man we wore that song out back then. Loved Metallica back then. It was pretty awesome and still is!!
First time seeing a reaction from you and I absolutely love the energy you have! Also, I’m dominately right handed but play the guitar as a lefty. So I play it upside down, so you just gotta learn how to do it like that!
Definitely listen to “One” by Metallica!🤟
Second this!!!!
Third this
Unavoidable Metallica songs: One, Fade to Black, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Unforgiven, Sad But True, and so much more...
Alex Hefner is doing their whole albums, one song per day, because the demand is there.
Fade to Black, while being written about James having his equipment stolen, it's how he felt because his aunt had bought it for him and he was devastated. To me it describes suicide or the mindset of the suicidal.
Enter Sandman, Seek and destroy
You forgot enter sandman…
Creeping death, Blackened, Eye of the beholder, …And justice for all, Leper Messiah, and more ofc
@@joeghost05 those are more obscure Metallica songs

Metal is pure... Never fake or pretending.
It's the emotions released so I can continue being a good human.
LETS GO HE FINALLY DID IT! Keep up the great videos JoJo...another one by Metallica is called One
This song is about drug abuse by the way, if you really think about the lyrics or listen to the song again it makes more sense
The pace of the music also takes you on journey, from jonesing and seeking the drug, to getting and taking the drug, to the euphoric, dreamy state of being high ( that’s when the music slows down) to coming down from the high, then back to seeking.
Jojo your reviews I am loving! Keep them coming!
I'm late to the party, but I'm glad to see you having a good time jamming to a classic! It's one of my all time favorites for sure! Check out "welcome home" from the same album.
Edit: battery is also an amazing one.
"One" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" next please!
"Cemetery Gates" and "Cowboys From Hell" by Pantera are also some good jams.
He listens to anything by Pantera and he will discover one of the guitar gods. Just don't do a song where Phil screams.
One name, domination.
That isn't an acoustic guitar in the melody portion, it's just a clean electric guitar tone, meaning no distortion.
I love how social media and mass media in general nowadays has allowed for so many of us to be introduced to content we wouldn't have otherwise been even interested to delve into.
Before, people would stick to what they were used to in terms of music and just deny everything else. I'm glad reaction channels like this exist where people are giving different types of content a chance and allow themselves to enjoy ❤️🔥
People still stick to what they know. It’s unfortunate most of them are stuck in the auto tuned pop era, I’ve tried to get my friends into metal and rock, and as soon as they hear a distorted guitar they’re like “nope” it’s really disappointing.
Yo Jojo-thank you for “you” it makes my heart happy to see our younger generation learning and respecting Many genres of music! I was very fortunate to have been born in the early sixties, so I got some of the best decades of music throughout my life! Keep reacting-you are truly a beautiful soul!!

OMFL I LOVE THIS SONG AND I LOVED YOURS REACTIONS AND EXPRESSIONS LOL, NEW SUBSCRIBER JOJOO
I love your reactions my young brother from another mother... Good to see you broadening your horizons with some ole school rock!
This song is about drugs, think of it as if the singer is singing from the point of view of the drugs itself, I know it sounds weird but it will make more sense.
So this song is about Bolivian Marching Powder and addiction.
And if you’re a lefty you’d need to invert the strings order like all time guitar legend and fellow lefty Jimi Hendrix.
I'm lefty and play guitar right-handed. Left hand does the fret/chord work... Besides, he said it feels comfortable righty.
@@paulh9657 i found many people do feel better with primary hand doing the fretwork. It is usually more dexterous than your offhand and even learning to play Travis picking or something is easy to do with your offhand.
Absolutely wild how this song is 8.5 minutes but manages to feel like it's 15 minutes and 3 minutes at the same time. While you're listening it feels so long, but once the song ends it feels like it was so short. Also feels like it's not really just one song, more like 2 or 3 played back to back, mainly because of the interlude section. Fucking amazing. Metallica's songwriting skills are top tier. 🙌🏻

Finnigitlit!! Just found your channel bro. You’re awesome!!
Its such a great song. It can really be applied to anything that controls someone without them really admitting or knowing it. Its great 30 years later.
As a guitarist I can honestly say this song is exhausting to play
downstrokes with palm muting and kinda fast picking so yea lol
...I’ve been playing guitar for 26 years; I got round to learning this tune in year 3 or 4. In all that time, all that downpicking during the verse sections has gotten harder and less enjoyable to play-not the other way around. On the other hand, despite having been playing them for over 20 years, I still love playing along to the melodic and dynamic centre bit. When I first learnt the solos, and finally got through them all the way with no flaws-that was an incredible feeling of accomplishment.
@@riphopfer5816 I agree with all of that. I haven’t even tried to play the fast down picking part in a long time because it just got aggravating.
I agree

check out their either motreal or toronto live set. its a blistering mix of speed and angst. they were angry, they play a 2 hour set in 90 minutes.
I can only play the intro to the main riff
I'm beginner but i tried downpicking that fast. Now my hand feels Like its gonna fell of
I love how some of the lyrics hit him and hes like wow wait, what kind of song am I listening to here they talking some deep shit here, but just as he's realizing there just might be a deep message to it the beat pulls him right back in so he can hold the message a lot like an addicted person who realizes what they doing is bad but just keeps getting pulled back in deeper.

You’re enthusiasm is infectious. Great new setup. Also, that’s a right handed guitar but you could roll like Kurt Cobain from Nirvana who played a right handed guitar left handed.
Just found your page. Awesome reaction!!! MetallicA for life!!!
Great review/reaction & you’re hilarious! Ty
The way MetallicA writes a song, the story telling extends beyond the lyrics into the instrumentals, themselves. For this one, close your eyes and imagine someone at work or going around town, looking to get anything for a high. the middle of the song is them getting what ever it is they wanted and getting high, "enjoying the trip" as they say and nodding off to sleep. Then, they wake up, hung over, head grinding as they search for their next hit. But can't find any. the guitar solo is them freaking out about not having it. Afterwards, they're back out on the grind looking for some more...then it ends with the laughter as they find their dealer, the dealer laughing.
I like the way you write MetallicA.
@@efthkon9142 ever since I discovered them back in the 90's, that's how I write it. MetallicA. It's all yours if you want to use it.
Finally LFR Jojo! I was there at that concert Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” tour which was opening for Ozzy Osborne’s, “Ultimate Sin” Tour.
Friday June 13, 1986 I got to see Cliff Burton play bass live, before the bus accident that took his life, way too early that September.
Jake E. Lee was playing guitar for Ozzy. It was three dates at the Forum in Long Beach.
It was history, and you could feel it, as the hair rose on your arms.
“The Thing That Should Not Be” is another great song on that album.

I was hoping you'd pay more attention to the lyrics, that's why I was happy to see you do the lyric one. I get it though. The music part of the song is so amazing, it's hard to focus on everything at once. I'm sure many people have mentioned the meaning, by now. I hope you'll go back and listen again, knowing the meaning. The different sections of the song are really quite brilliant and support the meaning so much. It really is a masterpiece.

Listen to One, The Four Horsemen, or For whom the bells toll
Agree
That feeling you got when listening to the song, it’s why I started playing guitar
the light part is when the user is high, and then as the song goes back to the abyss, the cravings come back. Genius.
Check out “Everlong” by the foo fighters. The lead singer in the band is Dave Grohl who was previously the drummer for Nirvana.
The song is about substance abuse and addiction, he’s speaking/singing from the perspective of the drug.
