Golden's closing statement hit the nail on the head. I came to canjam nyc not expecting to buy anything. Just mainly to try a few totl, some new releases, and stuff that I would never really get to try outside of CanJam. I did have an idea of what I really wanted to try such as the HE-1, the Utopia, and a couple of other IEMs. Well at the end of canjam walked out with a ZMF headphone and a feliks audio amp and my girlfriend shaking her head when I came home with my haul. I swear those two were the last thing I had on my mind. But the atrium with OTL tubes melted my brain and I swear Zach I didn't mean to trouble you with helping me pad roll the Atrium for an hour 😂😂😂
@@MagicsRevealed4You nice, enjoy! I spent a lot of time on the envy model and fell in love with it. As soon as I save up enough I’m getting the performance version.
As someone who has never been to an expo, I would love to see a video of how you guys prepare for one. Like do you bring your own DAPs or anything so you can use your own music to audition headphones? Or does the vendor normally not allow that and you have to use their source gear as well? Any general CanJam etiquette that newbies may not be aware of? Do people typically bring a reference headphone with them to compare against the gear they are trying out? I think I might go to CanJam NYC next year, so it would be great to be as prepared as possible! Thanks
I haven't attended CanJam before, but as one who has attended e-earphone's Portable Audio Festival in Japan 3 times, assuming the experience is similar that is, you'll need a DAP with music you've heard so many times you know (or think you know) the back and front of. If you're intending on trying out cables, you'll need IEM/headphone you're planning to use them on. Pretty much any gear you deem necessary to control as many variables as possible.
I can only go off of personal experience going to local events as well as looking at impression threads of previous canjams. For higher end headphones like ZMFs, Audezes, DCAs, etc., a lot of the times they'll have a setup with an iPad / Laptop to browse music on, so you don't really have to worry about it too much. If you DO have your own source, that's perfectly fine too; they will happily accommodate. Just let the guys on the booth know if you need anything and they'll be more than happy to help you out. For IEMs, since they don't really need a dedicated setup like headphones do, they would just display the gear and let you have at them with your source. That being said, if they're generous, they'll have a DAP or two for you to use; That was the situation I had back in 2017/2018 during a show in Jakarta and the Final Audio booth had a pair of AK380s for people to borrow and test their IEMs / Headphones. For me personally, I think it would be best to bring whatever gear you are "capable" of bringing to the show and get in the mindset of trying to use it as if you've already own it i.e. with your own music and your own source be it your phone+dongle, DAP, etc. And I say "capable" because in Canjam Socal last year IIRC there's a guy who brought out his personal Holo Audio May DAC to audition headphones on. that's some dedication to the hobby lol.
I went to a small event here in the Pacific NW, more speakers and high-end audio rooms over headphones / iems But even that was awesome. I found out that there are other women in the hobby which was nice. I'm planning a work trip to the LA area this year right around CanJam SoCal so I can give it a try. Hey Christie, I’m a woman, and I will be attending my first CanJam in SoCal in a couple of weeks. Oh, my, goodness... CanJam NYC was spectacular! I don't have many folks close to me that share our hobby, so the show was one of my most fun in-person Hi-Fi experiences to date. It was also so great to meet so many UA-camrs. You guys are as nice as I imagined. As far as show favs... I only got to try a little more than half of what I wished to, but my favorite new headphone on the day was the ZMF Caldera. With the tubes it was on it was by far the most like a quality live show to me ears. My favorite new mid-tier was the Dekoni x Hifiman Cobalt. Great combo of detail, range and musical pleasure at a realistically recommendable price point. I also met Axel Grell at the show and got to listen to his new project cans, the Heaveys. It would be awesome & truly "disruptive" if Ryan at Modhouse could collab with someone like Geshelli or Schiit to build a more affordable amp specifically designed to drive the top tier gold Tungsten, rather than us having to sell a kidney to buy summit-fi amplifiers like the dCS Lina system to drive them properly. I realise the whole system would probably still be 5-8 grand, and that's a lot... but it's better than 50. Which is how much the whole Lina stack is here in Australia.
One of my favourite reviewers is DMS. He looks just like Eddie Redmayne. In our house, DMS is referred to as “The Man of the Ages.” My favourite part of this was when Andrew smiled for the third time in history and then turned around and jumped into the wide sky. That was just brilliant! We refer to Andrew as “The Man of Intrigue.” GoldenSound is referred to as “The Man of Flippant Consternation.” Btw, please remember that Joshua Valor is referred to as “The Man of Myth.” I hope in time you’ll refer to these titles with the great reverence that they deserve. I’m surprised though that amps, dacs were not mentioned. I guess “The Man of Silence” holds reign over that topic….❤
one of the greatest takes from this for me is that red and blue flagship story. Both are probably very good and both probably tick many attributes we are all looking for in our audio gear, and yet, some preferred one and some preferred the other, and it's a splendid example to expand into all things relative to personal tastes. They are both excellent to the other half, rather than one half being wrong and vice versa. One detriment to going to a canjam is, if you love your money, then don't go lol great video guys, it would really be nice to touch the meat, so to speak, of the faces I've been accompanying for quite some time now. And this sentence really sounds creepy af but I wanna believe that what I meant still comes through
Well... on one hand, it's like they said in the last two minutes of the video: you might hear something you weren't expecting, but it was so good and fun that you had to buy it. But on the other hand, it can also sate your curiosity, and if you had a hole burning in your pocket and a strong desire to buy even before the show, the ability to sample all kinds of things can really help you narrow down to what you personally like most without taking a few blind leaps of faith to get there... perhaps even learning somethings you didn't know about your tastes. Of course, you should make the effort to go to a CanJam anyway, if you like audio and headphones. It's like FC-Construct said: he made so many memories and stories to tell, and it reinvigorated his love for the hobby.

The way you describe the 9k AT makes it sound like a slightly less intense Fostex dynamic, which I'm down for, but not at that kind of money. Also, AT wing system fan here. I'm going to Canjam Singapore next week and it'll be my very first Canjam. I'm more of an IEM person and I've already prepped my game plan MONTHS ahead of time as to what I want to try i.e. anything and everything I can get my hands on because events like this don't come around every so often where I live lol. Also, I can personally relate to GoldenSound's point about the good things you weren't planning on trying; I'm from Indonesia and we actually had a Canjam-like event a week after Canjam Singapore back in 2018 and they had the entire STAX lineup at the time (the flagship was still the SR009) and I definitely had the same brain melting experience Chrono had trying them. They're definitely worth trying out. For anyone in the comments coming to Canjam SG next week, hope to see y'all there :D
@@BillyKueekSG Singapore is fairly disability friendly, at least from what I've observed over the last few years. Hope you can make it and enjoy your time, man :D
Hello, I am new to the Audiophile realm. I just purchased the Meze 109 Pro as my first pair of headphones. I would like some assistance from the community to decide which pair to get as my second. I am going to stick with 2 for the next few years. I am deciding between the Audeze LCD-X, LCD-XC, Hifiman Arya Stealth, Focal Clear MG. My budget is about 1400 plus tax. I was also thinking about getting the Audeze LCD-2 Classic and Hifiman Edition XS together for the price. Can anyone make any recommendations.
One suggestion for future CanJam attendees, watch the Head-Fi preview video and take notes. I get to listen to all but 2 items on my lists. Don’t be afraid to go up and say hello to YT reviewers! They do appreciate meeting their viewers.
I live in the UK and I see there is a Canjam in London in august. Would love to go and try out some gear and more specifically headphones 🎧 but I EQ all of my headphones. Question is, can you EQ the headphones you audition/test? Or is there restrictions? As most headphones don’t have a great tuning so wont sound right to me.
The #1 highlight from the show was being able to directly interact with the creators and reviewers. I spent quite a bit of time talking to Zach over the 2 days. Axel Grell was great and I got to listen to the prototype headphones that he’s working on with Drop. They’re definitely a work in progress but it’ll be interesting to see where they wind up especially since they’re 3D printed. Spending some time talking with Zeos was a joy. Having a interaction with DMS was an eye opener! I was expecting him to be so passionate! It got real interesting once I told him that I had just purchased a set of stabilized Caldera’s. His hands started shaking like a crackhead needing his next fix as he politely asked to see them!😵💫[j/k]😂😂 😂. Let him have his fix.😉 You guys also need to do another video on 🌶 takes from CanJam. I know that you guys have to be diplomatic but there was also a lot of expensive stuff that left me underwhelmed.
Got any idea on what would be good for metal that has a good bit of bass whilst being open sounding?. I have a zmf eikon but would like something similar but less muffled and more open if that makes sense like if there was a sundara with the eikons bass that would be end game for me.
@@dedompler Thanks. Now I just need to save up for a while haha. I've heard many good things about them over the years I've just had other priorities though.
Nice video, even though I didn't get much out of anything the Asian guy said. He was just really vague, wishy washy and a waste of time. For instance he said how some certain headphone was not for everyone, or all genres, but was good on instrumental music. What??? Isn't virtually all music instrumental ? Does he mean it sounds not great on vocals? What he said he continually left viewers in confusion.Which is the exact opposite of what viewers come here for. Clearly your worst communicator. The young guy (name?) showed from his right side profile is easily your best communicator. I had several models of a certain brands headphones, and as I would upgrade,, the lesser models became cleaner, clearer, more open to the point that before the upgrade (electronics) only the higher up models sounded like they were capable of that kind of performance. Of course the higher up models increased in sound quality with the upgrades too. This headphone sounds THIS GOOD with THIS LEVEL of electronics is what every review should be about. Otherwise it's potential is who knows what? The original Grado SR 80 gets really good and goes from not enough and sloppy bass to piston perfect bass, and a generous amount of it, with the equipment I have now. The highs and midrange are impressively clean with no grain in the highs. They showed little sign of that before. The mids still sound a bit shouty at times but magnitudes less and not bothersome once everything is warmed up. Amazing what even cheap headphones can sound like with ultra clean electronics.
Seriously, an assault rifle selection grid on a computer screen in the background might not be the best backdrop to a discussion promoting the merits of peaceful headfi community events like Canjam. Seriously! Could be some game related screen, or someone might think someone is planning something. Maybe something to consider for the “ambient” backgrounds in future discussion videos. Thanks for considering the observation.

I hope I can go, it’ll be my first one too. I am a headphone user. My concern is whether I can manage it because I have disabilities.
@@BillyKueekSG Singapore is fairly disability friendly, at least from what I've observed over the last few years. Hope you can make it and enjoy your time, man :D
@@vianhoho19 thank you for the well wishes. Accessibilities should be ok, it’s whether I can take the long hours on the show.
missed stax at canjam chicago last year. Hopefully this year!
Those are all good options! It depends on what kind of sound you're looking for beyond the Mezes.
One suggestion for future CanJam attendees, watch the Head-Fi preview video and take notes. I get to listen to all but 2 items on my lists. Don’t be afraid to go up and say hello to YT reviewers! They do appreciate meeting their viewers.
The MM500 sound like they're just more expensive, planar HD560s'.
What headphone is DMS wearing? The MIC sounds great!
They are gaming headphones, steelseries Arctis pro wireless.
@@meredithgordon4101 They sound so good for a wireless headphone and mic combo
Come to canjam Singapore, add food reviews
How much is it again? the Crinacle project?
Apart from the gear ⚙️…what was the song everyone was using ..or you kept running into ?
Or what was your groups go too test track?
Off topic a bit.
Nerd fest aside, whoever edited this did a superb job.
The jokes on you DMS, I already have tinnitus!
LOVE this guys. I need to go to CanJam.
If you bring your own source DAC/Amp, then most people will let you listen to the headphones on that. Some people bring whole backpacks full of gear.
My notifications are insta today, maybe my day to get into something that's not entry level is near.Wish me luck lol...
Caleb + Zeos weekly podcast when?
Anyone try the Abyss Diana closed back?
Thanks guys! The shared element of delight is very apparent. 🙂
Anyone from @the headphone show going to be at CanJam London this year?
GoldenSound will certainly be there!
How close does Project Red sound to 7hz Zero?
Anyone met Sharur yet?
looking forward to all your reviews on your fav stuff from the show
come to canjam singapore!
Great overview guys!!!
I miss precog
Let him have his fix.😉
You guys also need to do another video on 🌶 takes from CanJam. I know that you guys have to be diplomatic but there was also a lot of expensive stuff that left me underwhelmed.
Really liked the Caldera Blackwoods I heard at SoCal CJ in 2022!
I’ll have try more of the infused woods next time!
Congrats!
"You wouldn't be able to get a headphone that has as good measurements 5 years ago". Did he just forget hifimans exists? Lmao
Are the stax good for metal such as Metallica.
No
Got any idea on what would be good for metal that has a good bit of bass whilst being open sounding?. I have a zmf eikon but would like something similar but less muffled and more open if that makes sense like if there was a sundara with the eikons bass that would be end game for me.
@@WyattOShea LCD-X 2021 + Resolve's EQ
@@dedompler Thanks. Now I just need to save up for a while haha. I've heard many good things about them over the years I've just had other priorities though.
No bass, good for speed and separation. A dry sound in the mids but treble expands and decays, opposite of harsh
It’s all sound the same.
Sorry to tell you this but you either need to get your ear checked or you tone-deaf dude...
bruh
Then you should try different cables lol
@@kyron42 good one
Lol this comment made me laugh after them speaking 30mins about different signatures and preferences 😂
Dont be so sensitive. Theres nothing wrong with guns. Guns dont kill people, they are an inanimate object. People kill people. People = bad.
They're sweet guns though
