  • The Water Pie is one of those magical recipes that came out of the depression era where cooks with little to nothing figured out how to make delicious dishes for those they love.

My grandmother used to make water pie and add Watkins Lemon extract (back when the Watkins salesmen came to your house to pick up and subsequently deliver your order.). I was just a wee girl, but I still remember the Watkins man and the Fuller Brush man coming to the house.

I must say, I do love the depression era foods. Growing up very poor teaches one to be humble and thankful for whatever they could throw together. Thank you for this video! Blessings 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Linda - I've never heard of 'water pie' but it looks good and sure simple enough to make. I does make me think of 'custard pie' and I would think adding some coconut, or some finely grated lemon, orange or lime rind would be equally tasty. Or add some fresh berries when serving. Thanks for sharing this recipe.

Like a PE can pie without the pecans. looks good. I've had this. A lot. Never had a clue what Grandma made. Thought it was a pie. How strange. She loved her sweets too. Wow. Thank you sweetie ❣️🙏🤗👋❤️

You need to get yourself a Mrs. Cubbison's pie crust ring. I love mine and use it every time I cook a pie.

Water pie!! Looks good! I'm wondering, if you had just covered the crust edges to keep from burning and not the entire pie if some of that moisture would have baked out of it in the last 30 minutes to allow it to set up better? Great idea to add lemon to it to make it taste like lemon pie! Love the videos!

I've never heard of a water pie but l found a recipe for 'Hot Water pie crust'. It's a recipe of Rose Wilder Lane's. I found it in Laura lngalls Wilders cookbook. I've never made it but now that l'm retired maybe l'll give it a try.

If it's the same as hot water crust (lard and water brought to the boil and added to flour), its like putty and you mould if into shape rather than roll it. It's for cold cutting savoury pies like chicken and ham, or game. It's used for pork pies here in UK, which are pretty popular(you eat them cold). If you google "hand raised pork pie" you'll see how to use it.

The trick to getting the first piece of pie out is to cut two slices😊
