Watch Tom Cruise Go Hypersonic in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ | Anatomy of a Scene

- “Want Mach 10? Let’s give ’em Mach 10.”
That line, delivered by Maverick (Tom Cruise) in the long-anticipated, and already quite popular, sequel to “Top Gun,” may help to prepare audiences for the fact that things have become a little bit more updated in the sky since the 1986 original.
This early sequence has Maverick arriving to discover that the hypersonic flight test he was meant to perform has been canceled by an admiral (Ed Harris), who would prefer to spend on drones.
But “canceled” is not in Maverick’s vocabulary, and he proceeds with the test as planned, aiming to reach Mach 10 speeds.
Discussing the scene, the director Joseph Kosinski said that he and his crew designed the sleek aircraft in conjunction with Skunk Works, a division of Lockheed Martin.
It is based on an aircraft “that may or may not exist,” he said. The shots of it in the hangar are “a full-scale mock-up that we built with their cooperation.”
Kosinski said the scene was meant to “take a turn and take ‘Top Gun’ into the future. Here we see Maverick on the very cutting edge of aviation.”
Pay close attention to the final shot of the scene, where Maverick takes off. It had to be done by one of the few Navy pilots cleared to fly what is called a low-altitude transition maneuver. The pressure wave the maneuver created destroyed a piece of the set, which meant the crew was only able to do the shot once.

Tom Cruise is a saviour of cinema. So glad he was able to convince Paramount and Skydance to hold off streaming. This deserved a theatrical release and was all the more enjoyable and immersive for it. I’ve watched the movie 2 times now in the cinema. It is the best film of 2022 thus far.
Me too. I want watch it again, but I'm afraid my family will think I've become obsessed 😂
Just watched it a 2nd time...an incredible sequel. Best way to watch this is at the movie theaters
Top Gun is at the top of my “I wish I saw this in a theatre” movie list, and there was no way this one would have been the same steaming in my living room. Simply incredible to think these are real fighter jets.
I watched it three times already and working on a fourth next week! 🤣🤣
You're right! Maybe I'm not smart enough to understand the economics behind releasing a film on streaming... but thank god they gave this a proper release, I convined a few buddies to rewatch this in Imax
"That is not a stunt man" Harris taking a pressure wave to the face 😂
Awesome isn't it? It's taken acting to the next level
Well, he is Gene Kranz approved. Looks about right.
Top Gun INCREASES US NATIONALISM!! Wonderful! Something the USA has been lacking for a very long time, all thanks to the evil democrats. Now with this movie is release, Nationalism will increase, like the way it should be! All other nations has A LOT of Nationalism, except the USA. Nationalism will help this country.
To the face!
@@jocax188723 well, he is Gene Kranz and John Glenn 💪
That hypersonic flight test could have been a great ending for a good movie, yet it is just a starting appetizer for the Maverick. The best movie I have seen over the last 8 years.
Well there's a lot you haven't seen then LOL

Hey I have this question bugging me for a while ever since I heard about this mock up of an SR-72. By mock up,they mean a real life model that's it right? Or did they actually build an aircraft that can fly? Because if it's the first case then what jet generated the pressure wave?
@@yash7461 good question.
@@lorraine7876 man I was expecting an answer from someone 😩. I'll post this in another thread

Dude has been great in so many movies... Ever since the trailer for the new Avatar came out, it reminded me of The Abyss back in 1989.
@Simulation algorithm So true. Reminds me, have you seen the trailer for the new Avatar? I got huge Abyss vibes!
Absolutely stunning work by the production team for this film. I cannot speak highly enough of their efforts to make just a great movie.
To put a fine point to this: it is, in fact, more than a great movie - it’s a phenomenal one!
You have to give director Joseph Kosinski in delivering that connected with the moviegoers after 36 years. Kudos to him!!! That is what a movie should be!!!!
Love the lack of wokeness, its just a good clean fun movie
@@restymervinponio4026 is he the same director for Oblivion?
I liked how they included the "transition to scramjet" sequence at mach 3 to make the scene accurate.
Yes me too I was giddy and mentioned it my family who didn’t find it as giddy as me because it’s quite realistic with that transition.
Agree, that was exactly how it should work. The transition speed is realistic, the mechanism seems legit and the airframe of course is also what you would expect. Furthermore the plasma build up in the high speed regime also looks what I'd imagine it to be.
@@angelosasso1653 Yep, that was brilliant to see how they did it.
the small radius banked turn at mach 9+ and the ejection at mach 10 though?
still forgivable for how good this scene looked
@@eric678 He'd throttled back for the ejection. Turn was gentle enough.
Those scenes of this aircraft crossing the skies at full speed were the most sublime shots. Gave me chills
Hats off to you Mr. Kosinski. You, Tom, and Chris McQuarrie made one of the best films of all time, made a film that was way better than it had any right to be. Thank you for one of the best cinematic experiences of my life
Lol it was really good, but don't go too far
He didn't go "too far", he said the movie is one of the best "cinematic experiences of his life", which i also agree with, based on how this movie was made, by training the actors to actually fly jets, experience elevated g force and low oxygen and then mounting cameras on the jets themselves, leading to less cgi and greenscreen that is so pervasive in blockbuster movies today.
@@kbanghart how is that too far? 8.6 on imdb so equal to the 18th highest rated movie of all time
@@strikerbowls791 yeah, too far
@@Eserr7856 yup too far
this movie was beyond my wildest expectations, as some one who grew up watching over and over as kid in VHS and with high expectations it still blew me away, so far seen the movie 7x and plan to see it many more times
Its a very welcome change to all these superhero movies...
This is as close to a perfect movie as I have seen in the last 20 years.
This scene was absolutely incredible
Favorite movie scene ever. So stunning
I freaking love this movie. I'm going to go a 2nd time. And hopefully a 3rd time with my dad.
@Kurt D Me too! I've already seen it three times and I'm going to go again next week on my day off! Simply perfection of a movie at it's best! Absolute 🔥🔥!!
Just watched it a second time. Hoping for a third. My Lil bro 25 is a top gun nerd and just saw it a 6th time lol
I have seen it 3 times 🙃 it's more exciting for me because I'm not too far from Coronado and Pacific Fleet station. All the houses look like the scene where maverick rode with Penny. I was also a former member of the Midway museum, so the ending with they raised the net to catch the jet makes sense to me, because the veteran volunteers had live presentations on how the hook catch the jets. During summer, they have an over night stay program for students on the Midway museum, with flight simulation, learn how to signal the jets to land , slept on the the actual bunk etc. Cool experience.
Same
RIGHT!?!? I'm going to keep seeing it until it hits top of box office!!
If you don't see this movie in theaters, are you ever really "seeing" it?
In dolby mandatory
Totally agree. Streaming fatigue is real. The television experience thanks to pandemic and lockdowns has been exhausted. It’s all about theatrical now for movies.
Highly recommend, if 'you' can, go see it in IMAX. My wife and I watched it at IMAX London, and was was just a joy to watch there!
If you don't feel it, you're not watching it loud enough
I’ve seen it four times so far, twice in IMAX
Arguably the best scene of the movie and it was only the beginning! Great to see Tom back at the top of his game.
When he said, "He's the fastest man alive". That was sooo good!
It's also BS. Tom Stafford gets that honor on Apollo 10. Mach 32.

Weird how he died just a few days before the movie's release, so that line was true.
I've been going to the movies for many years but for some odd reason I never watched a film in IMAX...so after a 2 year hiatus from cinema (covid) I decided to to finally watch a movie in IMAX and it happened to be Top Gun: Maverick.
I think I made an excellent choice.
Best movie I've seen since the start of the pandemic. Sure none of the acting deserves awards, but this is the perfect execution of nostalgia and the effects were never thought possible. Deserves Best Picture.
I agree 100% with how you stated it.
One of the best movies I have watched. This will go down as the best sequel ever made. Sorry Terminator 2!
Terminator Judgement Day is literally one of the greatest films ever made..
As good as Top Gun Maverick you can't compare them
Avatar
Transformers revenge of the fallen
Pirates of the carriben at world's end
Avengers End Game
And Top Gun Maverick are the 5 best movies I've watched in the cinema since 2007
This is a great movie, but nothing has topped Terminator 2.
You correctly have identified them both as the two greatest sequels ever made, but nothing tops Terminator 2. If Maverick had sacrificed himself the way Arnie did in T2 then maybe you would have grounds for this claim. But it warms my heart to see so many people on forums talking about T2 and Maverick in the same sentence. I never thought we'd get a film anywhere near as good once the woke brigade took over Hollywood. This could well be the last great sequel ever made.
For me Aliens
@@Tbonyandsteak yeah the original alien is fantastic, just as good as the sequel imo. Aliens and T2 are so good, I mean maybe T2 takes the edge but not by much.
This aircraft looks like next generation SR71. Absolutely incredible movie and should only be watched in theaters.

I need to see this movie as many times as I can before it leaves the cinema! I felt like I was on the end of a rocket my seat shook so much! Awesome movie
This movie is an ode to pilots and flight love, to humanity and it's spirit! Absolutely amazing.
fantastic opening. wasn't expecting much but when i saw this scene knew it would be something special.
Tom Cruise: I do my own stunts
Ed Harris: I do my stunts too by taking a pressure wave to the face without flinching
Tbf, flinching is great sometimes for actors. Brings in the humor.
But has he ever broke his ankle and continues to walk off the scene?
The soundtrack piece in this scene is called “Darkstar”. And it perfectly incapsulates the tone and scenery of the buildup for what we’re about to witness.
As soon as you see the aircraft fly over Ed Harris’s character I was hooked. This film is a modern masterpiece and watching it in theaters was the best cinema experience I’ve had in recent years.
This movie is so much fun with so much heart. They did right by fans of the OG while appealing to newbies.
You will not regret going to see this movie. This is the best movie I have seen in years. Go see it at the big screen, so you will get the full experience.

Of all existing ways to go deaf, taking “a shockwave to the face” definitely must be one of the coolest ways to get it done

I absolutely love this movie. Seen it three times already, buying it day one on 4K BluRay. I could watch hours of these commentaries.
This entire hypersonic bit of the film was where I thought to myself "Sleek, clean & gorgeous, so typical Joseph."
Tom Cruise is a savior of cinema. He is truly intelligent when it comes to film knowledge and produces masterpieces. The realism and visuals in this film are stunning. He keeps pushing the envelope farther and farther.
Just saw it yesterday in ScreenX format. Absolutely loved it. Had a big smile on my face when “Danger Zone” from Kenny Loggins played and when Maverick pulled the tarp of his old Kawasaki. But this movie is so much more than just a trip down memory lane. The career choices Maverick made, the friendship with Iceman and the struggle with Goose’s son. One of the rare sequels that is actually better than the first movie. If you haven’t seen it yet, go see it quickly, but watch it in cinema and not at home. I might even go see it again, but now in IMAX format.
Just saw it in theater. Awesome! How they capture the aerial shots at speed are unreal.
Ed Harris standing in front the pressure wave like it is nothing. Respect.
This was such a moving scene. The director quickly and efficiently laid out the conflict and implications for all of Maverick's co-workers and created really great stakes that I was instantly invested in. The music, and watching the plane heading into night, but then turning around for one last charge into the sun at Mach 10 gave me chills. It's been a long time since I saw a movie that did that.
This sequence on IMAX was exquisite!
I’m just so happy that everybody loves this movie as I do, best movie of the year so far!!
Mind bending opening scene. Loved this film.
What a movie, must be seen in theatres
Ed Harris is the Best, just incredible actor when he plays military roles
that low altitude transition to begin the film was possibly the greatest beginning of a film i have watched in my life time. until now that was held by Terminator 2 beginning which i watch religiously every few weeks. now i watch this. My God
Excellent movie! This scene with Maverick wearing this particular suit and going onboard the plane reminds of "Firefox" with Clint Eastwood
Seen this movie last night Saturday June 4....true masterpiece...checks all the boxes and Jennifer Connelly looks absolutely stunning :)
Yes and loved how they did the love story as it wasn’t too much to distract from the story and wasn’t overly sexual. It was tastefully done in my opinion.
I thought Ed Harris was gonna get knocked back at least 10 feet off the ground. OG's been working out.
Watched this with my kids and loved it. Remember watching the first one over 20 times over the years. This one I will watch with my kids for over 100 times no doubt. Absolutely the movie of the year.
Absolutely enjoyed going to a real theater, IMAX at that, for this movie !
My local cinema did a fathers day double screening of 1 & 2 back to back on the big screen. Even seeing #1 again like that was amazing.
When I saw the film during the later flying battle scenes I caught myself leaning forward half out of my chair. I've never done that watching any other film.

The Darkstar sequence is sublime and demonstrates how Maverick is willing to push the envelope as a test pilot. Great directing by Joseph Kosinski and let's not forget Tom Cruise who made this sequel possible.
