That line, delivered by the mob boss Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) is both the text and the subtext of a key scene from the Netflix movie “The Irishman,” nominated for 10 Academy Awards. The sequence takes place at a ceremony for Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro), the right-hand man to the Teamsters union leader Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino). But the occasion is really more of a celebration for Hoffa - although some of the “higher-ups” aren’t happy with the way Hoffa has been running the union and are eager to send him the message, through Frank: “It’s what it is.”
In narration, the director Martin Scorsese explains that what he found important in the scene was not so much the dialogue as the looks, glances, silences and pauses. The dialogue only becomes significant in the heart-to-heart that Russell has with Frank near the end of the sequence. Scorsese says the looks that stand out are those of some of those unhappy mobsters, as observed by Frank’s daughter Peggy (Anna Paquin) while she’s dancing with Hoffa. She understands the gravity of the situation in that moment, even if the union leader does not.

Scorsese is a genius filmmaker. I've watched this movie over 3 times now. Every time I watch it, I realize something new about the characters. I notice a different detail about the cinematography or the music or an actor's acting in a scene. Without a question, my favorite director.
My problem is with Frank narration:
Does this mean the whole film is purely from Frank's point of view, i.e. it's not necessarily truthful
@@fergalhughes165 it was based on his story. So if course it is from his perspective. Entirely truthful? Don't know.
Well does it rly matter, this film tells a story which is Frank's story, that's it ! Enjoy !
@@fergalhughes165 yeah i would say the film is entirely based from Frank's point of view. Some things could be exaggerated and some things could be false entirely. The Joe Gallo scene for example, is one of my favorites, but everyone claims 4 gunmen walked in that night, not one. Same with his account of what happened to Hoffa. They found blood residue at the house he pointed out, so his story must have a deal of authenticity to it, but it's not 100% factual. More like 70% to 80%, I'd say
@@sk98ification you see, the thing is, there is one line that's 'narrated' by Buffalino (Pesci) ("When I get someone to do something, I expect him to take care of it, not ask someone else .. I don't want two roads coming back to me" .. or something like that).
That one line means the whole film isn't entirely Frank's pov .. unless even that one line (delivered straight to camera by Pesci) is actually *Frank's opinion* of what Buffalino would say.

As tragic as Jimmy Hoffa's murder is, it brought Al Pacino and Harvey Keitel into the same frame for the first, and only time.
Al Pacino and Harvey Keitel are not in any scenes together at all, Keitel only had one speaking scene.
@@brötzmannsax And you have no idea what you're talking about. There is a brief moment where Al Pacino and Harvey Keitel are meeting and shaking hands, they don't speak. They're just there. In fact, Martin Scorcese straight says he put those two together for that shot, simply because they have never been in the same shot together in all of cinema. In fact, he says it in this f'n video. Are you kidding me with your BS comment?

What a profound reflection on the enormity of a mans life. I believe one of the greatest films of Scorsese’s career and I believe it will be a timeless classic as the years go by.

This movie reminds me of classic Godfather. So sad they don't this type of movie anymore.

3:57 - gotta love Scorsese. He knew how much that would mean to audiences. But the remarkable realization is that he’s such a film *fan* that this also meant much *to him* .
A lot of children in the comments have been exclaiming that The Irishman is lame, but I beg to differ.
It is a slow film, intended to be slow for the audience to feel the passage of time, in the same way we feel life both quickly and slowly pass by. These comments are from short-spanned people whose real concerns are explosive actions and enormous complexities. The film is a special book adaptation that conveys empathy and raw emotions, and I think that's why Scorsese is truly right about Marvel movies not being cinema. These comments are from people who do not understand cinema.

The Irishman is a masterpiece, joker was an average film with great performance, the movie is ignored by everyone just because of the performance.
If you compare joker to taxi driver, joker is a less than average movie.
@@dawsondjodvorj2408 I watched Joker twice. While the acting by Joaquin Phoenix was still really impressive, I felt that the pacing of the movie was not so good. It felt rushed at certain points when it was meant to move slowly. Nevertheless, I like to see Joker as a kind of step into more acclaimed films. I got hooked into reading English literature only after I was introduced to the Romantic poet William Blake in the comic book Watchmen. It's a little step in the right direction, but of course it also takes some encouragement into trying out the finer stuff.
I see no harm in enjoying both honestly but that takes a personal range. I agree with your thoughts here. Lots of people are exclusively looking for explosive action. We should widen our perspective. I was often disappointed by the Marvel movies because I never felt much from them. I hold in higher regard the Dark Knight trilogy, Man of Steel and Logan because they actually struck a chord with me emotionally. The characters were shown to go through emotional struggle on top of their physical battles with enemies. Or at least I could feel it. They're not as deep, dramatic or emotional as a full drama, because they're also in for action-packed entertainment. But that's why for their genre, I think they strike a decent balance. Most of the superhero movies however were mainly for action value IMO, which is great fun, but there's no connection to life and humanity there except at a surface level (or the mere attempt). It made me upset that not more people were looking for more movies where the superheroes were more human than super.

I agree but Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Casino Mean Streets etc.didnt win best picture either and we still.remember those as classics.

@@Revolver1981 Netflix is destroying cinema how?? They have theatrical runs, then the movie is widely available for everyone to watch. Talk about Disney and how they monopolized Hollywood, how they force small movie theaters to play their films longer, giving smaller indie films no chance to play or make money. Talk about their underpaid artists and animators, and how they get shafted despite doing incredible artistic work. Talk about how Disney has a horrifyingly strong grasp on Congress and copyright laws in fair use if you want to talk about killing cinema. Netflix and all these streaming platforms are the next step for alot of filmmakers, including greats like Scorsese, and Cuarón, not the death of the medium. Just a new extension of it. But it is far from the thing that killed cinema.
@@imyoubutbalder Netflix don't give their movies proper releases in theaters. A film like The Irishman should've been seen by as many people as possible in the theater. Netflix don't release their movies on DVD either. They've killed video shops as well. Video shops don't exist now because of online streaming. The Irishman has definitely been snubbed because of Netflix. The film industry hate Netflix. Scorsese only made The Irishman with Netflix because it was his only option. He was always against online streaming.

Is Martin's best picture yet? Probably not. Is it on pair or even better to movies like Casino or Godfellas? I don’t think so. But there’s one thing I know, and that’s that I LOVED this movie. Yeah sure, the de-aging could be a little bit better, sometimes the editing is messy, heck I don’t even think some of the writing is great. But they’re minor details. I enjoyed every second of this movie and that’s what finally count, YOUR OPINION. So, why don’t we just chill and respect each other? In the end they’re just movies, yes, Scorsese is great and had made better movies. I understand. But not every movie is perfect, and in someway that’s what makes them special.

My wife and I watched the movie, she fell asleep at one point. Then we re-watch éd the movie to the end. I had to look up the actual ages of the people the actors were portraying. Terrible effects, the men looked like old men trying to be younger men. So poorly done im shocked that this movie is getting attention. Should have been an hour shorter.

i love scorsese and al the actors in this- but this was not a great film- just everyone pretending it was. compare it to his opus films like goodfellas and its not even close. i don't know why we re all honouring this film- in lieu of honouring the man. u can love the artist but not enjoy the art from time to time.
