    I have the Know Before You Go book and I love it. I work full time and have 4 kiddos so I can only shop at about two stores per week and I can’t track all the sales at every store. BUT, it’s so great to know that lowest price of my go-to items when I see them on clearance at Ralph’s or see them on sale at Costco. This week I got 10 boxes of clearance cereal because I knew from my price book it would be about $0.20/oz at Costco and it was $0.05/oz on clearance at Ralph’s.

    I spend about 100 a week for 2, sometimes 3 (grandson). But i find now i can afford organic fruits/veg, healthier lunch meats, organic milk. There is also a discount grocery near me i go to for snacks, organic cereal, frozen fish raised in usa sometimes. We also raise our own rabbits, quail, chickens, pigs, steers and we garden and i can and freezedry. I also forage for "weeds" to dehydrate and make healthy teas like dead nettle, goldenrod, and dandelion my fav!

    My go to indulgence at Sams right now are their cookie clusters, its in the candy isle, cookies pieces & kettle cooked caramel covered in milk choc...ohhhh mahhhh gawwwwwd...dangerously addicting.

    The lemon meringue cheesecake looked lovely. I bet it tasted good.
    In the UK Costco isn’t available to everyone.
    In different supermarkets here we have advantage cards where you can save money on certain items & at Tesco you receive a coupon with a certain amount of money that you can spend in the shop.
    For Easter I bought some hot cross buns & a couple of days ago I bought a Lindt salted caramel chocolate egg - one of my favourites. It was half price.

    You made me do the math and I just bought the same ketchup in Saudi Arabia on a big sale with a huge discount and it was equivalent of $4. Getting Heinz for that price was a great deal and I should’ve gotten it.
    Comparing prices here is just crazy because almost everything has to be imported and that gets expensive. Some things are cheap. They have a lot. I think that flatbread can’t be more than certain amount so it’s less than a dollar for big package of flatbread. Sometimes vegetables are a great deal. We can get a package of herbs sometimes for $.35 equivalent. Depending on the herbs, some can be really expensive like sage or basil. I am getting a lot better at knowing what good deals are here though, but it’s taking me a couple of years to really integrate the prices and the times that things are on sale like my favorite tea or laundry detergent which every couple of months goes on sale for half price. The problem for me is they don’t apparently have laws about requiring that the price on the shelf is the actual price and they will not honor it when they screwed up and then they act offended that you don’t want to pay it. I chose that because it was a lot cheaper than what they now claim. Then there’s a little matter that some of the tags are just in Arabic and I have to really decipher them. My Arabic is slowly improving, but not enough to be useful in the grocery store really.
    Your videos are homey and make me feel like I might someday get back to Costco. We have IKEA here, but it’s no Costco.

    My closest grocery store is 10 miles away. In our county we only have one store. Food Lion. I can go to 5 other counties, they each have 1 grocery store, Food Lion. One Walmart 30 miles away. Then 60 miles to the other grocery stores. We do have farm markets that sell local fruit, vegetables, baked goods, cheese, fish, meat, butter. • @shesinherapron
      @shesinherapron  2 місяці тому +2

      Great question. I looked it up and I read that most protein shakes have a shelf life of 6-12 months, depending on the brand and type. If the shake is past its expiration date, it's best to err on the side of caution and discard it.
      It's also important to note that protein shakes should be stored properly to ensure their safety and quality. They should be kept in a cool, dry place and away from direct sunlight. If the shake has been left out at room temperature for an extended period of time, it's best to discard it, even if it appears and smells fine.

    I definitely shop differently now that I have a stockpile. I always look at the next grocery flyer as soon as I can get a peek of it. I first look for things that are good deals on the foods that we eat. Then I look for things that I can stock up on. This week, there is nothing in the ad that I really feel that I must have...so I will wait until next week. Last week I went to a store called Ruler Foods and they get a lot of Kroger foods and will honor the sales that Kroger has. In fact, you have them scan your Kroger card and you can get gas points there as well. Last week they had the shank and butt hams (not spiral) for .87 pound. I got 4, 2 for me and one for my brother and one for my Mom. They had a dozen eggs for .99 for a dozen with a limit of 4. Of course I got the limit. Butter has been on sale around here a lot lately. Either Aldi or Kroger. They have been like $2.69 or $2.29 and I always get the limit. My husband just laughs and shakes his head when he sees me buy more butter, but I use it all the time.

    I use the Cooklist app to track my pantry and my shopping list. You connect your grocery store loyalty numbers, so when you add an item to the shopping list, it is automatically adding the item to the connected grocery stores as a shopping cart. Total cost for the shopping list shows up for each store. Comparison shopping on steroids, all from the app. When I choose the Walmart shopping cart, it adds the whole list to the Walmart app and I schedule my pick up time.

    • @amyschmelzer6445
      @amyschmelzer6445 2 місяці тому +2

      I don’t keep a price book because it didn’t work for me either. When I get home from shopping I write the price paid for an item on the package. I keep a stockpile so we’re not usually consuming all of something before I buy it again. If I see a sale in the ad on say tuna, I look at the cans on my shelf and see how it compares. If the sale is better, then I will buy as many as we’ll use before it expires and my budget allows. If it’s the same, then I might buy a few to fill my holes. If it’s a little higher, then I might pick up one just to counter inflation in the future. If it’s a lot higher, then I wait and buy none.

    The only problem I really have is meat. I would love to by bulk, but scared too. I live in Houston, Texas (right on the gulf of Mexico) - at least 5/6 out of the 12 months is hurricane season. We have 1 small income - enough to pay bills basically (mother-in-law starting to develop Alzheimer's), so if we loose anything we're done.

    • @PsychoSusieHomemaker729
      @PsychoSusieHomemaker729 2 місяці тому

      I live in hurricane country too, not texas though. I have chest freezers and I will only buy chest freezers. During our last hurricane we lost power for 5 days. I threw a couple of heavy quilts over my freezers for insulation. I checked my freezers once a day to see if anything was defrosting. Great thing about a chest freezer is because everything is stacked on top of each other it helps to keep things frozen so the first things to defrost will be on top. Nothing defrosted at all. But we lost everything in our side by side fridge. I also can. Have you thought about doing that. I like to keep my freezers FULL but when i find a great sale on meat (couple of years ago a store had boneless skinless chicken breasts for 88 cents a pound) i still stock up. I just can things. If what I bought isn't something I like canned, I will pull stuff out I do like canned and will defrost and can that. I love canned chicken, steak tips, roast, pork roast, and hamburger meat. They make for quick meals when I'm not feeling up to cooking. Steak tips and roast are my favorites. I use some instant mashed potatoes, heat up my meat and make gravy with the beef stock in the jar, a slice a bread and have open face beef sandwiches. Canning intimidated me before I did it, but now I love it. I also keep extra jars on hand just in case things in the freezer do start thawing so I can can it up.

We could possible use our grill, but it depends on the situation. I have been interested in canning. It's getting over the fright. I also have limited storage space. I have a stand up freezer besides my regular side by side. That's what fits in the space I have.

    Do you recommend writing everything in pencil and then updating it each quarter or something to make sure you're current? Also, are you just writing down cost per ounce? Sometimes it gets confusing how different places price things. Also, do you have a threshold for what you consider a "good deal?" Also, do you not include household stuff in your grocery budget? I'm just curious. I currently do $800/month for groceries but that includes all toilet paper, laundry soap, paper plates, deodorant, etc. If not, how do you budget & track those items?

    Just a suggestion on the peppers. I chop them up and use my food vacuum sealer. Then I freeze them so that I can have them for cooking in the winter months. Best thing to do is buy them when they are cheap so you can prep them this way. They really do freeze nicely in the vacuum sealer bags. I also do this with onions.

    I love how you save $$ but I see no way I can. We have one store, the Walmart. Grocery stores have closed. I have to drive 75 miles to a Costco or Sams. I have a Costco membership but use it mostly to have things shipped to me. So figuring gas to go 150 miles round trip, I don't have much savings. I have an Aldi's 60 miles from me that I visit sometimes. I don't understand when you say "digital coupons". What is that?? My kids are grown and just me and my husband but every time I shop, I say wow, we just need to stop eating it's so expensive!!

      A lot of stores ship things. Walmart, Amazon, Sam's Club, Costco are a few. Look for canned meat products such as salmon, tuna, ham and chicken. I have gotten some really good deals for my pantry online. We are a family of 6 and our budget is $800 a month. When I find things in bulk on sale I buy it. You have to make it a mission to shop for food. There are good deals to be found.

      I’ve never seen storebought pineapple in glass either, but I do can my own once a year. My favorite aspect of it is that it doesn’t have that tinny flavor that metal cans do. Same thing goes for peaches. However, I wouldn’t say that canning my own fruit saves me money because it doesn’t. Pineapple costs (fruit, sugar, lids, time) are a wash even when buying them at rock bottom at Easter or Christmas. Peaches probably cost me more to can myself, but I buy better quality local fruits when they’re in season and the flavor can’t be beat.
