Last night I used two cans of black eyed peas to make cowboy caviar. I thought they needed used up since we don’t eat them as a side like I thought we would. Turns out the best by was, um… 2018. 😳 I opened them, rinsed them and they were just fine! Nobody’s the wiser. What happens in the kitchen stays in the kitchen!😆

I volunteer at several food pantries - accepted practice is non-perishable foods can be distributed up to a year past stamped date (older than that can go to the workers, but not to the public).

It always surprises me how many people freak out about the "best by" or "sell by" dates. Seriously we never even had these dates until 1970s. And that was strictly a manufacturing choice. Thanks for continuing to educate people on this like Tawra and Jill!

Great video. I live in a small town with small town stores so when I go to the "big town", I stock up. I had a dr. appointment yesterday so made my list. I got so many good deals. I always make my appointments early so I can shop early. I got salad mixes, canned veggies, meats, all at great prices. I am working on freezer meals and prepping and freezing my veggies as I watch you and like minded you tubers. Thanks for everything!

You are so inspirational and encouraging and if people go back in your videos they will see you always encourage the small steps to get to a pantry similar to yours, it takes time, discipline and dedication to build a pantry like yours and you are so graceful and informative! We have a mini prepper pantry (about 6 months worth) more due to the size of our home and lack of space; our garage is detached and not heated so we can’t put canned food or liquids there (live in CO where we can get into -10 to +15 F degrees during the winter) though we do keep our bulk dry goods like flours, sugar, potato flakes, oats and other grains are stored in vacuum sealed bags and 10gal buckets. My adult children call me “weird” when it comes to how I store my items but they know exactly where to go for items when we are all together and cooking together as this has been my method since they were babies, I do it by categories: Mexican, Asian, Italian, French and General- this way, when I know we are going to make stir fry, myself or my husband goes to the pantry and is able to get every item we need in one stop to make the dish instead of doing the hunt and grab method, same in our freezers and fridges. The general is basic canned veggies, soups, broths, condiments, pickles, bulk herbs and spices (I keep the small spice jars in the kitchen and just refill from the bulk containers), other seasonings, avocado and olive oils, ghee, etc (still separated and categorized🤷‍♀️). After struggling in the early years of our marriage, I learned to keep a well stocked pantry and freezer, even if that meant we didn’t go out every weekend or splurge “because we deserve it” until we had at least 3 months of shelf stable items and freezer foods, so when things would get tight financially or the weather kept us home for days at a time, we had always had food readily at hand and if we have learned anything since 2020 to present, items are harder to get so stocking up when you can is vital.

Thanks for the grocery stock tips! I like having a stock pile. Ours is not very much because we tend to eat out a lot but my husband and I have realized that cooking at home is waaay cheaper and I know it is healthier too. Our daughter had a school project to do and had to use elbow noodles. I told her I had some extra in the basement stock. So she took that. Easter Sunday I was going to make homemade Mac and cheese and I forgot to replace those noodles she took! Oh, no but we ened having plenty of food and it didn't get missed. Lol

I LOVE the “idea” of a prepped pantry - but aside from not having the space - and being in a rental - we just don’t use that many canned items. I ALWAYS have canned tomatoes, coconut milk and kidney beans - but other than that I guess I just don’t cook enough variety? 😂 I have a “stockpile calculator” though. Basically it is a table where I list the cheapest per amount something is and if I see it cheaper I stock up on that - but only for stuff that I regularly buy like dishwashing tablets, toilet paper and the aforementioned cans. (And beauty supplies I guess?) lol. Anyways. I admire the space and as always am in awe of your efforts. Go you.

About the canned goods, I will agree in most aspects however, I do know that our green beans turned kind of tasteless in the matter what we did, we could not taste anything green bean wise after about two years past their best by date another thing is tomato products and tomato sauce can go bad faster than what many people think. We had some spaghetti sauce in our basement. They were just the jars that you buy at Aldie and after six months or so we opened a few of the jars and there was mold inside the spaghetti sauce so I would suggest that acidic products like that you probably eat by the best by date, or shortly after same thing with fruits as well.

I wouldnt blindy fifo the products. Double check the dates of the ones yiu had vs the ones yiu bought new. As often the stores dont fifo properly so it could happen that the new ines yiu buy actually have. Less good date than the ones you still had at home

I recently ordered some number 10 cans of Macaroni from the LDS online store. Do you know if the dented can rule affects dry goods as well as other foods like meats and veggies? I was hoping these could go into my long term storage, but now I'm worried because of the dents. :(

"Why doesn't Derek help you?- NO." Honestly, I completely understand that. It reminds me of when I was recently watching a youtube channel of a handmade candy store, and they said it takes approximately a year or more of training hours to completely train up a new employee in every aspect of the production and packaging and storefront duties.
That's a lot of invested time when you could just do it yourself. Especially for small restocks and reorganization every couple of months. Like, if my spouse was interested in it beyond surface level, I'd be happy to explain and re-explain the system I follow, but that also introduces it's own amount of issues and solutions that involving a whole 'nother person in something always does.

Your Costco haul would be about $300-$400 easily here in Newfoundland. If not more 😢.
