This hits hard - my wife is leaving me because I am a selfish addict who took too long to get help. I got that help and I am fighting like hell to conquer my bad habits, show her the man she needs me to be, and keep my little family together. Whatever happens, Jason's song is helping me through this, the toughest period in my life.
"She used to wake me up with coffee every morning" what a dagger to the heart. if you spend your life with someone, you understand that pieces of life like this are what true love is made of, and the loss of that is shattering.
@user-vj4sk9yc7g You're misguided feminism is truly missing the point here. Just try to enjoy the song for what it is, not because of how you see things
So many people talk smack about him online because of a statement he made that they don’t agree with. “Never heard of him.” “Your loss.” He’s one of the greatest songwriters
There’s a really good interview with him and he addresses just this. He’s doing his part to just at least change many conversations. JI is the real deal
Once again, Jason Isbell tells the story of the struggles and agony caused by addiction without judgment. His experiences create his lyrics, and I applaud him for his brutal honesty and poetic spin on the pain and suffering that happens with addiction. The loss of self, of loved ones. HUGE, HUGE, applause for addressing the subject often ignored- domestic violence. I work in this field, and highlighting the NDV Hotline and the Substance Abuse Hotline after the credits sent chills through me. Once again, he created awareness around difficult topics no one wants to touch or discuss. He is bold and brave! Like I needed more reasons to respect him!
I just wish the video was as good as the story writing in the lyrics. The video narratively misses the mark imo. It's just guy takes pills...guy hits wife (is it even his wife or is it girlfriend)...woman has enough and leaves...its really generic compared to the song.
I wouldn't say domestic abuse is ignored. I also wouldn't say that's what this song is about- although it's depicted in the video, the lyrics don't even hint at it. He does have a way with words, describing things in a way that even people in the situation would struggle to. Like in his song, Anxiety. Or Elephant. Or If We Were Vampires.
How can one man write so many songs that tackle the hard life of working Americans' struggles without ever patronizing them? I continue to be amazed with his work. Can't wait to the the 400 Unit at Radio City in February!!!
I laugh anytime I see this. For some reason some group of fascists has decided that this should somehow be a competition of some sorts. Most of think Anthony has a great sound - including Isbell. It's not a culture war if you're the only one looking for a fight@@utsurobune3530
Good God, I'm sitting here nearly sobbing, listening to an artist that I wished I had listened to years ago. It just goes to show, even at 73 yrs. it's never too late to be moved by genius.
I’m just going to say it. I think this might be his top 3 songs yet. I’ve loved it since the album dropped and I’ve had it on repeat for months but I’m not tired of it yet. I think in a decade we will treat this album like southeastern and this song will stand the test of time I think
The first time I listened to the album (the day it came out) my initial response was that it was pretty good, but no Southeastern. Having seen Jason and the 400 Unit perform it a few weeks ago, and having picked up new lyrics each time I listen to the album, it's definitely elevating itself each time I listen.
Another example of why Jason is the best in the biz. This one absolutely gutted me. Broke down in tears the 3rd time I heard it, once the haunting brilliance of the lyrics hit me. Bravo!
One of my favorites from Weathervanes and the video is a fantastic accompaniment. So great that there are still legitimate songwriters out there with substance.

I believe Jason is definitely one of the best along with his old band mate Patterson Hood, the Avett Brithers, The Lumineers, Hozier, The National, Ray Wylie Hubbard, James McMurtrey, Nathaniel Ratliff, Florence Welch, Jim James, Lord Huron, Marcus. Mumford to name just a few including Willie. His new album is awesome! And speaking of The Stones, while Hackney is not Exile, it’s damn good, relevant and a testament to their enduring legacy. 6 decades at the top! Yes- there is a lot of garbage in mainstream music. Whatever! There is so much great music available through modern technology that I am not bothered in the least by the garbage unless a kid rolls into the gas pump with it blaring. No worries- I just crank my tunes up, pump my gas and live and let live!

Not cliche, but leaves room for personal viewer identification. Doesn’t sugar coat the pain of the addict or the victimization of those who love addicts. Glorious work!
Like John Prine did with Lake Marie, Jason can put you there with relatable lines like "hear her homemade house shoes slide across the floor". I felt like I was witnessing the passing of the generational bard torch when Jason opened for John at the Fox.
