Future project for me too on my '87 928. All the vacuum pods are shot, i've bought the 3 replacements, just got to do it. Another thing for you to check, does the solonoid clutch on the AC compressor engage? The ac control unit (the thing with the fan control knob) has a white relay on the circuit board. That's the relay responsible for powering the AC compressor clutch and it fails. I believe the relay is not available any more, but there is a youtube tutorial on how to select an alternative relay and wire it to the circuit board.
