- Make Cage Feeders for Fishing - In this video I show you how to make your own Cage Feeders using materials I already had lying around in my workshop.
The most popular Feeder sizes are probably 15 grams and 30 grams, but i also show you how to make larger feeders to cope with large and powerful rivers. These feeders are often made as square or oblong versions to help cope with the fast currents.
Please remember that the Cage Feeder sizes shown in the video are for general purpose use. If you have a specific need for larger or smaller feeders, then you now have the ability to make exactly what you need to cope with almost any situation.

Hi Den, from one ex-pat (ex Staveley, Derbyshire, now in Ottawa), it's difficult over here to buy fishing tackle which is readily available in the UK; so just like you I make my own. I made mine with some old large hair rollers - they work a treat! Keep doing what you're doing mate I love the videos 👍

Thanks for your comments John. I think I may have mentioned that they were a bit retro, but they do work just as well as those bought from the store. I'm sure it's the same for your plastic bottle versions. At the end of the day, if something works correctly, I don't mind if it doesn't look like the absolute best.

Thanks Russell. I do enjoy using the tackle I make myself and it gives me a great deal of satisfaction when I catch fish on it. The only problem I have is the Arthritis in my thumb joints which makes it difficult to do repetitious work these days. Still, it's a tiny price to pay when you consider others who cannot get out on the bank due to illness.
I've been making my own just like this since about 25 years , replacing the losses every few years.
I also made a few square ones with a closed bottom and a lid to be locked close with some soft copper wire.
These I had used to attract zander and eel filled with small pieces of chopped baitfish like small bream or roach, so just for the scent without releasing the chum .
These really seemed to attract the fish more than a simple sinker rig , but sadly they attracted the mitten craps either to often chew up the bait fish before zander or eel could find it.
Love this video. Excellent job. Simple is best as a tool maker who has both made moulds for the more modern varieties and CNC turned some on down time just because I can i think this video is just excellent will be making some.

This is gold Den. I coincidentally binned my rough-as-hessian-bags first attempt that I made some months ago after a big sort out of my gear today. It was made of stainless expanded mesh with an ill thought out boom and a clunky lead sinker. It just didn’t work. Looking forward to tomorrow in the shed now that you’ve ironed out all the wrinkles. Nice idea on the square cage, i've recently been making these using a cheap pack of plastic hair rollers, pull the velco cover off and leaves a perfect plastic feeder cage, strip of lead folded over and the work brilliantly as carp feeders, since the rollers come in a number of different sizes managed to make 2 dozen for under $5. Cant wait to see your next DIY project

Great video Den. I used to make the baskets out of curlers too. They go directly over the ground when cranked up. Today I only fish Browning or Guru speed baskets. You can swap the weights quickly. And I mean they can be thrown more precisely. In Germany they cost € 2.50 - € 3. Keep going with your videos. Very informative.

I've made my own 3oz square river feeders in the past for the tidal river Trent, out of square/box pieces of grey PVC/plastic for running cable through.i just randomly drilled out a load of 5mm holes and slapped a 3oz dead cow onto it. I made 4 holes for the dead cows legs to go through then put a dab of araldite to keep it stuck down and tied some twisted booms with a swivel from 30lb mono. They looked just as good as anything in the shops at the time and did a cracking job and caught me plenty of bream and barbel.
I also still make tiny 15mm winter cage feeders at 10 gram, they hold maybe 25 2mm pellets or a half a thumb sized bit of groundbait. They make a very nice PLOP like a 11mm pellet does when you hit the clip, and it drops in the water. Brilliant for F1's and carp as the feeder only hold around a mouth full for a F1's, small carp and large skimmers.
Exactly mate. You don't need to buy expensive feeders, when you can make your own, which work just as well.

Hi Den, been through and watched a few of your videos, I’m a carp fisherman from the north of the uk but currently out living just south of Sydney by a couple hours while a complete my 6 months mandatory farm work for the 3rd year visa, just wanted to say thanks for the videos they are brilliant, iv been looking around at various venues and have fished kangaroo valley a number of times with varied success, I presume that your fishing slightly further north than I am but wondered how big these wild carp get in the rivers ? Any around 20-30lb mark that you know of? Many thanks George
Hi George. Thanks for your comments. I live up near Newcastle these days, but for our first 6 months, we lived in Nowra. Around here, I have had carp up to 20lbs from the tidal rivers and I assume there are also larger fish in there. The fish in these rivers do seem to be a very good average size with 10 to 15 pounders being pretty common.
I would suggest you give the Shoalhaven river a go. I believe that you may be able fish at Grady's Riverside Retreat, but you will probably need to pay for a Day Pass. Don't worry if the river is still a little brackish, I catch plenty of fish from that kind of water in my area. I hope that helps. Tight lines.

When I were a lad we used to use the plastic case that camera film came in , drill holes in it ,small holes in lid and bottom to run line through , worked perfectly. Cost nothing. I suppose with the advent of digital film they may not as common.
Good point Gaz. I remember using those old plastic cases as well. As you say, they probably don't exist anymore.
for those looking for the "mesh" in north america its called Hardware cloth. his looks like 1/4inch i think.
That's right Francois. It's metric here but, yes, it's 6mm or approx 1/4"

Loved this video didnt skip 1 second of it,but i have one question, what can i do if i wonna make one really heavy like up to 100 grams but without making a too big of a feeder,could you hellp me out with this one ?
Thanks for your comments Matiss. I have never made any Feeders which have more weight than those in the video, so my only real suggestion would have been to increase the size of the Feeder. However, given that you don't want to do that, my only other thought would be for you to look at other UA-cam videos where they show you how to make Feeders using molten Lead from a mold. That way you can have as much lead as you need without increasing the size of the Feeder. I hope that helps.
Just make the feeder to the size you want it, then you can weigh out 100g of lead and melt it to the length of mesh with a leg at each corner of the lead to fold over the mesh and keep it in position.
If you can't melt it, just cut as many lengths of lead sheet you need to make it to 100G then use the strongest glue to stick the sheets together(or buy thicker sheets) but make the first sheet longer, so you can fold it over, like in this video.

That was my intention John, but all the rivers around me are flooded at the moment and the ponds are also full of brown water. I think for next weeks video I will just do a quick one on some rigs and variations to use with these feeders. I am also building my new Match Fishing Seatbox at the moment, so time is a bit tight. (Yes - I will do a video on the Seatbox! lol.)

I would make the swivel connection with twisted powergum and an swivel in the end. Another one could be an thick Flurocarbon connection crimped
Powergum and the Flourocarbon line are good alternatives Elo.
Hello Den, did you consider wrapping the lead in electrical tape to cover any rough edges or would that not work / last long?
also would paint take to the mesh (if you were minded to)?
I've never found a need to wrap electrical tape onto my feeders. I just make sure any sharp edges are sanded smooth. As you say, I think it probably wouldn't last all that long.
As for paint, I think that would probably be fine. Some of it could be scratched off in the normal course or wear and tear, but if you feel that painted feeders would be more unobtrusive, then I think there's no reason why you shouldn't give it a try.

Where do get the wire mesh from please
Hi Dean, I buy it from my local DIY Store. I live in Australia, so it is called bunnings, but in the UK, I'm sure B & Q etc will stock it. It is 6mm mesh.
Is it still legal to use the lead in the UK when fishing
For using as split shot a No8 shot and below is OK. For everything else, here’s a link to the latest document I can find:

The Environmental Protection (Anglers’ Lead Weights) (England) Regulations 2015
Interpretation
2. In these Regulations-
“lead” includes any alloy or compound of lead; “lead weight” means split shot or any other thing suitable for weighing fishing lines and which is neither incorporated and fully enclosed in the core of a fishing line nor incorporated in the construction of the swim-feeder, a self-cocking float or a fishing fly; and “supply” does not include supply for or by way of export.
