I don't know if you'll see this Darkfox127, but I am insanely grateful for all your tutorials. They have helped me immensely with my modding. Thank you so much! :)
I searched for CK followers tutorials and this was one of the videos to show up and not your recent one so yes, it will be great for you to add an annotation for people to skip this video and go to your new one since it covers the most important part which are voices and more. Great work on the videos, they're really helpful!
Thankyou Darkfox127 for the easy to follow tutorials, they have helped me better understand things in the creation kit for my mod Riverwood farm beta 😊
So I ended up redoing it, cause it donned on me that I was editing a mod rather than just making a follower, and it works great now. Thanks for the help.
Just wanted to say thanks sooo much for your tutorials. I've managed to make my first mods as followers with the help of your videos and I really couldn't have done it without your clear tutorials. Super helpful!
WOAH! All this time I've been frustrated over having to do the 'setnpcweight' console command all the time to get the faces to look right. This was very helpful, thank you!
Wonderful tutorial, and very clear. :) I loved how it got in-depth. Oh btw, anyone who has a problem with their function keys, like f4 bringing up the display screen options instead of exporting your face data, just press fn along with Ctrl + f4.
I'm sat here trying to help all you people and you leave a few sarcastic comments. I select it as a backup in case for any reason the ck doesn't select it automatically. It's not going to cause any harm selecting it.
As shown at the end of the tutorial it's a simple matter of drag and drop, if you are placing an NPC into a custom cell then you need to make sure that it has been fully Navmeshed or they will not show.
Just double check everything, usually the common mistakes made are the relationship setting with the player or you have selected a dialogue which is not compatible with the follower dialogue. Without checking over your setup it's not easy to diagnose, its easy to miss something out.
You can get NPCs to dance by setting them to use "idledance1 -3", using the "cicero" idles. The idles must have at least 50 seconds set for the timer for it to work or it doesnt work. Check "must complete" flag makes him dance continously when he isnt doing a higher priority package.
Thats an interesting one, I've had this before and it's yet again another Creation Kit glitch. Try reloading the kit, you usually try pressing head preview at the bottom to force it to update the image. Try changing the colour a few times of the selected warpaint and see if it shows.
The relationship can be the main buggy thing but if you are able to create the relationship and when you load up the kit and its there then you should not be having a problem. The only other things to check is usually the currentfollower is set to -1 and the potential is set to 0. Maybe check their disposition is over 70 too. Other than that there's no reason for your follower not to be working. Also be sure that another mod you have is not causing any problems.
This is what worked for me. Instead of using the -1 on my keyboard, I copy and pasted the minus simple from google. and it worked. But you also make sure to delete your npc from your world. then re place him in after you have made changes to him or her.
My newer version of this tutorial does mention that if you have any current mods which change followers in any way, such as UFO, you can have issues with your own custom followers. If you have done everything correctly you should have no trouble.
You will need to navigate to your Skyrim directory which is on whatever drive Skyrim is installed on. If you are running a Steam version, which I would imagine you are, you will find it under Steam>>SteamApps>>Common>>Skyrim. Check out the CK wiki for further help.
No problem, I would recommend using standard voices as unique characters tend not to be usable unfortunately. There is also ways of doing your own dialogue which I don't bother with myself.
Erm, just a tip. Try centering and making your annotation half the size of the video for people to notice it. Believe me, I wouldn't notice it if I didn't know it was there, I would instead pay more attention to the video to find solutions for my problems since this is a tutorial.
Be sure that you export the face data, this was mentioned at 19:20 on the video if you want to see how it's done. Sometimes the kit glitches and the option will not appear, if this happens try restarting the kit.
I do't usually bother with those mods as they don't work with the game but as I understand most of these hair mods replace current hairstyles so when you select a hair style within the kit the mod will replace it automatically when you load up.
I'm sure I mentioned that within the tutorial but it being 22mins long it's easy to miss. You just select your actor in the object window and press CTRL+F4 then confirm and you should get a box to say the face data is exported and you are all done.
Hey Darkfox127, Rusheeda 4.0 is Posted in the nexus Thank you so much for your Tutorial's on create a follower. Rusheeda is a Wolf Follower Tribute To my Real Life Wolf, I made the in game Rusheeda AI as Close to the Real Life Rusheeda as Creation kit allows, I'm very proud of the outcome of her she is my first mod to create and I did get help along the way from some other very knowledgeable modders but she is like no other animal follower that the nexus has seen, as I have spoken to so many that have her now she looks like anyother on the surface but under the hood she is a well tuned racing engine extended beyond the normal dog and Wolf and any other animal follower So for yourself and others I invite you to download her, and for those that want to see under the hood I left everything in her so you can learn as I did in the past 3 months how to put her together to the point she is now, there is a german translated version ESP as well, I'm working on try to get it to translate auto but that more learning LOL, hopefully soon though!! Thank you again for your wonderful tutorials which with out these to learn from I could never have been able to make Rusheeda what she is today.
Surprise! It's a another Creation Kit glitch *Face Palm*. Certain races like Argonians tend to have this glitch and the best you can do is edit the face and use the full body preview but keep refreshing it. I haven't found a way around it but the face will look fine in-game.
The amount of gold is judged by the Hireling quest line I believe so you can take a look and see if you can change it. It could also be in the script but I'm unsure which off the top of my head.
You should always save regularly,a new glitch with the kit has come in where it glitches and "Stops Working" when you go to save, a way around this is to save as soon as you start a new mod even before you have done anything.
Only other thing that can usually cause a problem is the voice type you have chosen may not be compatible with the follower dialogue. Double check your disposition and factions too. Hope that helps.
This covered everything (in great detail and explained very well) except where the followers 'home' is, when I tell them I want to part ways they just stay where they are and don't return to where I spawned them, I'm presuming something needs to be done with a marker and a reference in the npc edit menu but I'm not sure, any ideas? On a slight tangent do you know how I can make a home I created in the kit capable of moving in a spouse?
I did it again and seems to work fine, thanks! Great video! Oh, and one question...If I install now a mod for the bodies, would it work with the npc I created before? Or do I have to do something with it?
Double check the relationship as there is a glitch where it can decide not to automatically enter the Parent NPC value, other than that just check everything else and if that fails you may try re-installing the Creation Kit 8(
Cicero has a weird... ish... happy... ish... dance... ish.... Yeah I've never seen someone dance in Skyrim either without the party rock mod. Nice tutorial though. I'll definitely be using this.
It sounds like an issue with your mod itself or the kit, usually its just that you have missed something but you seem to have everything set correctly. Sometimes when making a lot of changes the game remembers older versions and your machine needs a reset to clear Skyrims memory a little. Only thing I can recommend is try creating a follower in a new fresh mod and see if it happens to work or reinstall the kit.
You need to be sure that the ID you give for your actor and other things such as Relationship are different or the kit won't understand what to refer to. I usually set my actor ID as their name and then the ID for my Relationship status I just place Rel on the end, all ID's need to be different from each other.
I always try to respond to most comments and messages 8D Maybe but it should work whatever version you have, depending on your PC it could be your spec but if not I would just put it down to the buggy Creation Kit again and maybe try re installing the kit. Just be sure to keep saving and hopefully it wont be too much of a pain.
great tutorial...but I have a few questions: 1. how do you rotate at the end when you put the follower in Riverwood 2. how to combine the making of a follower with mods I use so I can use hair from a mod, armor etc.
Be sure to check out my basics tutorial videos. The second question involves making the hair mods an esm file temporarily I do believe but I don't know how this is done.
great vid bro.. may i ask something? how to change the size of the "actor window" your working with? I tried creating a follower but the preview doesn't fit in my screen at all so i can't see what the hell I'm creating.. I'm using 1024x768 resolution btw.
Hi DARKF0X127. first of all...thank you very much for the great tutorials...helped me alot. Got a question..i want to have more than 2 followers...how do i disable the" looks like you already got someone with you" settings. i've already edited the gameplay/settings/number actors allowed... to 11..
You should familiarise yourself with the basics before jumping into scripting really but if you have gone ahead and created your animal follower, when you next come to load your mod you select your Skyrim and Update esm file then tick your mod file and set it as active to edit the already created mod. If you are editing the Dawnguard esm you must select only the Dawnguard esm and your mod as active.
Just wanted to add something. I hope yiur getting sponsored and not doing these things for free. I think you are by far the best tutorial guy when it comes to Creation Kit. All the other guys just bugger me off. And you always have the wierdest names on your created npc's. Loveit. What do you say.. Endorses? :)
Hey quick question, I've had some requests to make my player home more interactive for followers. Is there something I can do in my home to tell followers what to do, or is this controlled by follower AI packages (in which case I believe it's out of my hands). I have chairs... and plan to add extra markers for leaning against walls and so on, but do I actually have to add code/attributes to attract followers to interact with these areas? Thanks!
I have had a look into the quest lines for marriage but had no success, as far as I can tell it's again another Skyrim glitch with custom NPCs. One way I did think of doing it was to set their packages to just a single default package the same as what the other marriageable players in the game have and see if they resort to hanging out at your house or see if there is a way of setting a package with conditions of having been married to you for them to go to the house.
And one thing. Creating a Hireling, one that you pay some coin to follow you. Is that included in your script tut or do I actually need to develop some kind of own imagination in the Creation Kit subject?
I want to make may followers and make my own Guild/Faction, how would you create the guild? Or should I just use Guild Starter, because I wanted to make a guild that is a variety (Thieves, Assassins, Undead Warriors (customizing them and giving stuff like raise undead etc.)
Not much I can do apart from tell you to go through the video carefully, there are easy things you can miss like the relationship with the player and -1 on the currentfollower faction. I'm sure I have had these issues before which are in previous comments. Beyond that I'm afraid there is not much I can do.
I'm going to add an annotation to the new version of this tut as everything is mentioned in that one. This tutorial is out of date. Oh boy, some of the conversations on UA-cam comments. 8D You can find the new video named Detailed Followers Tutorial. Happy Modding!
very informative.. still leaving a few things out though.. things ive been really trying to understand how to do.. what if I have other mods in place, which I want to incorporate.. such as better face textures and body stlyles. How do I make this into an actual mod file, rather than just depositing it into the data folder... Where did it send the face gen data to? I'd like to test out a follower ive made, but through NMM or MO, just manual install into the data folder. How do I get the correct file structure to do that, and where would it end up if created in CK... Just a few IMPORTANT things that would be beneficial to know.. things that aren't explained in the CK itself at all.
Great tutorial. I've never touched the CK before and I had a working follower in no time. I have an issue though- I made a mage follower, but whenever I try to give her mage robes, she doesn't put them on and keeps wearing her bar wench outfit. I tried to get around this by just giving her the clothes in her inventory, and while it shows her wearing them in the CK, in-game, she's naked. Oh dear. How do I fix this?
Could you do a tutorial on how to create a follower with a custom race like Ningheim I always end up with a different colored face and other glitches following the normal procedures described in this tutorial. That would be really great since there is no such tutorial around
Hey darkfox. Don't know if you remember me. You helped me with rain clipping on my exterior house mod. "Home in the valley" you should make a tutorial on that for other people if you haven't already because that helped a lot and quiet simply to do but for other people who might not find it so simple
I have tried to contact the author of the original script and tutorial to see if he minds me doing a video but I've had no response and he seems to have gone off the modding scene. I may do the video soon anyway and leave him credit for the method still.
First off just wanted to say great vids, they are very helpful. I have 2 quick questions, first I did everything in the vid, but when I load up the game it doesn't give me the option to have my follower join me, just says (you know). Second I cant get my companion to wear custom gear from another mod, it show up in the creation kit and when I place him, but not in game.
@DARKF0X127 thanks for your tutorial but i have got 1 problem here I can't get my follower with me and when i talk him it's like i talk to a simple guard what did i miss? thanks!
I too am having issues. I made a new follower and he had the dialog option for "I need your help follow me" yada... he pauses, auto equips a bow... and then thats it. He resumes wondering and talking again has the same chat option. I have re-made him three times and each time I get the same end resault. It's becoming a bit frustrating.
When using custom hair (say like Apachii for example), if it shows up in the preview in Creation Kit correctly, but in game as as a vanilla hair mesh (even though I've got it checked to use the mod etc.) is there something that would cause that?
Is there a way to make custom followers semi-essential like the vanilla followers? Making enemies stop attacking them when they enter bleedout and restoring their health when out of combat?
One thing I need help on is creating a spellsword (Sword and magic style) follower. I've gotten the basics down as to how my character will act and appear in game, but I have issues when it comes to them fighting.
First, thank you so much for this tutorial! I really didn't know where to start at first and this made the whole process easy. I am having a bit of a strange problem, though--for whatever reason, my NPCs' heads have started ending up different colors than their bodies. They all take on this weird, inhuman gray color even though the body looks normal. Do you (or anyone else who might be able to answer) have any ideas on how to fix this?
The only fix I know(doubt it's a permanent one) is using the console in-game to change their weight. setnpcweight 50 or anything between 10 and 100 (unless 0 works too) is what I use to just fix them grey facies XD
You can't just disable the dialogue, Bethesda made it limited as not to have too many followers to prevent the game from crashing at having too many follow you. There is a setting for summons in the game settings and there is a way of doing maximum follower count but I am unsure as to how. I do not see the need for this amount of followers given the way the games combat is and the number of enemies you face at any one time but if you wish to do it there are also mods available on Nexus.
Oblivion mod allowed a detailed follower where whilst you visited different locations, they had different dialogue lines. Would this be hard to do with a follower?
I'm pretty sure I've followed these directions to a "T" but the "Follow Me" dialogue option is still not available. The dialogue box comes up and I can ask him other things depending on what I put as his "Association" in the "Relationship" tab. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing wrong. I've tried using every single voice, CurrentFollowerFaction is set to -1, disposition is 78, all the factions are correct, and I have the correct relationship info... It's very puzzling. Thanks for the help!
Go to 19:20 in the video as I explain this about half way through and then tell you how to correct it. If you have any experience with archiving you can can try what Und3r7ow has suggested and see if it works for you.
"Multiple master files selected for load. Load operation abandoned." All I have activated is Skyrim and Update, both are esm. The only other files (That I want to use while making this character) are TDNEEquipableHorns.esp PulseRifle.esp and shogo_laser_katana.esp All of which I have made active files. Help?
For some reason, the changes I have made to the tones of skin, warpaint etc. the sliders work and i can pick the colours fine, but the preview is always the same (colours). Anyone else experience this, or can guide me on solutions?
thank you for your tutorial but i have got 1 problem, sometimes when i run, the follower stays where he stand and he doesn't run...so, why is that happening? can someone tell me how to fix it? thanks!
I have tried this a few times myself and for some reason wouldn't work for me. I packed the files in and they would just disappear and they wouldn't upload with the mod. May work for others though so thanks.
I have gone through the entire process and have found my follower in game and I am able to open their dialogue and make them my follower. Once I hit the Follow Me option in the dialogue, my follower will follow me for a few seconds and then they will flash for a second, their default armor will come off then back on, they put their fists up twice, and then they will wander around as if they weren't my follower at all. What do I need to do to fix this problem.
If the CK crashes on you, it might have an auto backup of your last save for your esp at skyrim/backup/. It will be listed something like yourMod.esp.0.bak, just remove the #.bak and see if it works.
Difficult to understand how you mean, I've never had this kind of issue. What screen resolution are you using? The kit requires a fair bit of room to show everything.
Great tut! I ran into a problem tho. Somehow I ended up making a duplicate in the Creation Kit and I tried to just right click on the name and pressing DELETE but it doesn't remove it from the character list. I went into my Skyrim folders and the .esp is nowhere to be found yet I still see them in game. Any help is appreciated!
Since it's a week ago, I realize you may have already solved your problem, but this seem like a load order problem to me, Try and modify the load order so that your mod comes after the custom armor mod, if it's the other way around, your mod will try and equip your follower with a non-existing armor.
I don't think it's a mod conflict. My follower's body kept changing colour when I was mucking around in the CK and just clicking between some checkboxes.
Hey man you mod was very helpful. I do have one question though. If i wanted to change something after i place my character in the world. How would i go about doing that? I tried to load the character in the CK but when it asks if i want to save the changes it wont let me since its saying its a master file.

The armor I'm giving one of my npcs from a different mod won't show up and she keeps defaulting back to her old armor. I followed the steps but she still won't keep the armor...
I don't know if you'll see this Darkfox127, but I am insanely grateful for all your tutorials. They have helped me immensely with my modding. Thank you so much! :)
Thanks very much, I'm not getting sponsored. I do all this to help others and because I enjoy it. Just glad the videos are helpful.
I appreciate the long, detailed tutorials. I think it might have helped me figure out a problem I've been having.
I searched for CK followers tutorials and this was one of the videos to show up and not your recent one so yes, it will be great for you to add an annotation for people to skip this video and go to your new one since it covers the most important part which are voices and more. Thanks, I am going to do some more tutorials when my machines sorted out, had a few technical set backs.
This is far more detailed than all of the tutorials I've found. Thanks man!
That moment when you're creating your follower...and the CK crashes, then you realize you haven't even saved your file once.

10:30 "they're going to go around and kill everybody..." The way you say it makes it hilarious to me.

Adding spells/perks is much easier by drag and dropping from the object window, just speeds it up :-) good tutorial though, thanks.
Brillant! this resolved my problem with the face ALL i had to do was pressing CTRL+F4
I'm sure I mentioned that within the tutorial but it being 22mins long it's easy to miss. You just select your actor in the object window and press CTRL+F4 then confirm and you should get a box to say the face data is exported and you are all done.

Thanks, really good video. Don't worry about the length of the video though, the more information about creation kit the better !

of course :P
hmm...I guess I will try to look it up somewhere tho not sure what to search exactly :/

great tutorial! much better and detailed than BestInSlot's one
all I had to do was press Ctrl+f4 to import a face to my new NPC follower
No worries, glad its now working.
How do you move the camera? I'm not talking about rotating or zooming but shifting the view (2:06-2:08, when DARKF0X127 says "Spin them around.").
Many thanks for all the tuts. Very helpful
The kit has to update fully for the duplicate to disappear so next time you load the kit it won't be there. It leaves a small D by it I do believe.
I'm going to add an annotation to the new version of this tut as everything is mentioned in that one. This tutorial is out of date. Oh boy, some of the conversations on UA-cam comments. 8D You can find the new video named Detailed Followers Tutorial. Happy Modding!
Yeah okay, That worked i changed my resolution and now its full AWESOME thanks man :D
very informative.. still leaving a few things out though.. things ive been really trying to understand how to do.. what if I have other mods in place, which I want to incorporate.. such as better face textures and body stlyles.
Could you do a tutorial on how to create a follower with a custom race like Ningheim
I always end up with a different colored face and other glitches following the normal procedures described in this tutorial.
@DARKF0X127 thanks for your tutorial but i have got 1 problem here
I can't get my follower with me and when i talk him it's like i talk to a simple guard
what did i miss?
Trying to make a Werewolf follower.. can't really talk to it, or get it to follow me.. it's also not where I placed it..
Load operation abandoned."
All I have activated is Skyrim and Update, both are esm. The only other files (That I want to use while making this character) are TDNEEquipableHorns.esp PulseRifle.esp and shogo_laser_katana.esp
All of which I have made active files. Help?
For some reason, the changes I have made to the tones of skin, warpaint etc. the sliders work and i can pick the colours fine, but the preview is always the same (colours). Anyone else experience this, or can guide me on solutions?
Your Tutorial was very helpful. Thank You.
thank you for your tutorial but i have got 1 problem, sometimes when i run, the follower stays where he stand and he doesn't run...so, why is that happening?
can someone tell me how to fix it?
They dont dance, but there's several mods done by animators ;)
my package window pops up too big, i cant click the ok button on it. how do i adjust it? running windows 8
Hey dude just a question. If I or anybody for that matter want to use a custom race as our follower do you just load up the files for that ?
I don't think it's a mod conflict. My follower's body kept changing colour when I was mucking around in the CK and just clicking between some checkboxes.
Hey man you mod was very helpful. I do have one question though. If i wanted to change something after i place my character in the world. How would i go about doing that? I tried to load the character in the CK but when it asks if i want to save the changes it wont let me since its saying its a master file.

The armor I'm giving one of my npcs from a different mod won't show up and she keeps defaulting back to her old armor. I followed the steps but she still won't keep the armor...
