  • Discover how to identify and forage for Fat Hen (Chenopodium album), a wild plant that's been replaced by spinach but honestly tastes far better! It's a common wild green but not the easiest to identify, so let me help with this video.

Always be 100% sure of your identification before eating any wild plant or fungi. There are a couple of wild plants which share similarities with Fat Hen, such as Black Nightshade. So, it's important to take a couple of good field guides out with you. Remember; "If in doubt, leave it out."
Woodland Classroom host courses in foraging, wellbeing in the woods, mindfulness in nature and bushcraft in North Wales. If you would like to know more, go to: woodlandclassroom.com/
Note: Always have the permission of the landowner if you want to forage and ensure you have a good field guide (or two) with you so you can make a a positive and safe identification of the plant.

Fat hen has self-seeded in my garden in and beside my raised veg beds, particularly in and around my potato raised beds.

Fat hen, I believe also known a good king Henry, supposed to refer to its German name. Always to be found bordering old traveller stops. Called fat hen due to it being Henry the 8th favourite veg. You eat the flowery heads lightly fried with wild garlic (Jack in the hedge).

That was very informative thanks. It is the first time I have found this channel. I grow good king henry in my garden which is apparently similar to fat hen (though fat hen I am yet to try). I bet the seeds are good too?

Good King Henry is a plant I'm yet to find myself so it's on the hit list. I don't know if the seeds of Fat Hen are edible or not. I would lean to them being edible as the whole plant is fine to eat but I would do your own research before taking my word for it as I've not eaten them myself yet. Good luck
