Wow. Very busy for sure! Lots of things going on from heating rail, fixing turnouts, detecting hot bearings, a car with a bad door, cleaning coal from tracks, dealing with derailed cars, a machine with no engine etc... What a week!
It’s probably obvious to everyone, but it seems like the acculturated coal dust is the source of railbed challenges you have to constantly battle. We really appreciate the insight you provide on “railroading”. Thanks
Your right about that Gary, coal fines in my track is the bane of my existence here.... :-) Really appreciate your watching the video and we wish only the best for you my friend.
Learned something new; the split bucket to clean up the excess coal that falls. One some of your videos showing the loading, I always wondered how the spillage was cleaned up. Thanks, Dave. Be safe out there.

Happy new year and may the sun shine wherever you go. As a native Ithacan I have to say aw, go on, it's not all gloom. Yes, it's grey, but it has its pleasures too. If you return, please visit the beautiful waterfalls in Buttermilk Falls and Taughannock State Parks, take a free carousel ride in the Triple Cities (admission is one piece of litter), ride the Adirondack Railroad (something I need to do), and, depending where you are, have a Purity ice cream code, a speedie, beef on 'weck, maybe a bottle of wine from a finger lakes winery.

What a week! It seems like you are about a week behind us on the weather - we were -4º overnight while you were nice and toasty, but it looks like the cold made it your way eventually, and the mishaps on the railroad certainly haven't spared you!. Hopefully things go a bit smoother in the new year for you Dave!
Wow, this is a lot of bad luck You keep a good eye on the tracks It may be the warm weather and the rapid change in temperature that has caused the breaks in the metal. And the derailment. I know in upstate NY in one winter I had 3 door handles on my Avalon snapped in half and my storm door handle broke off The cold is brutal on metal
The amount of work that you have to do to keep a railroad on "track"😂 is unbelievable. The weather just seems to fight the continuity of the railroad. Thanks again for showing me things I never knew about. God bless
Everything's old here duotronic and we keep on patching and yes steel can snap pretty easy with the right pressure on it. Really appreciate your watching the video and we wish only the best for you my friend.
Hey there Dave, hope all is well. Looks like a rough start to the new year. But its good to think upon a song I know of with the title "Even in the Bad Times, There's Some Good". Its my hope good comes out of all the mines troubles. God Bless, take care, and you guys be careful out there, and try to stay warm.🔥😊
That's Mr. Murphy (Murphy's Law fame) trying to earn his Holiday Bonus! Fortunately, it doesn't appear anyone was hurt by his antics ... he must like you guys.
Man that is like the worst time to get a derailment. Im amazed the old rails held on that long. The discoloration of the wheel hub was not a false alarm at all. I do wonder has the bearing quality went down or its just too worn out bearings that can't handle too much load?
what a mess! it is better to find the bad bearings before a major derailment or someone getting hurt. what happened with the drop doors? pin failure? or something else? nice seeing all the great videos!

Man you've had a lot of stuff going on over the holidays Dave. It must be true ( When it rains it pours ). Just think life would get boring if we didn't have stuff to work on. I'm still very happy I can still do the work at my age.
The military had a formula where, if one man could do a job in one hour in the summer then it took two men, two hours to do the same job in extreme cold. I'm quite sure that same theory would apply to railroad snafus.. Heck of a way to kick off the new year but at least you got the coal moving and that pays the bills. Nice video Dave, the hopper cars are showing their age, would be a big job inspecting them all for wear and tear in the linkages. You missed all the derailments but family time is more important sometimes and take care. Cheers and say hi to Freddy
What a bad time for the mine. Will the derailed car be scrapped it looks like it would need a lot of work to repair it. The track was left in a mess for sure so now you can't run round a short train. I know you love the job but I bet you were glad to be home while some of this was going on. I see heavy snow is coming over a few states. It did not mention your area so hope you get away with the worst of it. Have a Good Day.
Everything's old here and we keep on patching and keeping things running as best we can Cedarcam. No short train your right about that. Your also right that some days I am glad I'm home. We got 7 inches of snow today, I took today off and me and Freddy hung out together! Really appreciate your watching the video and we wish only the best for you my friend.
@@ThatsDavesOtherDoings We got about the same 2 days ago and it has turned real cold now, like you it was nice to stay in but I don't have anyone like Freddy around Bet Freddy was happy to stay indoors too. Have a good day
Dave, Thank you for sharing this Week in Review episode. So many problems happening in just a short amount of time. Must of been an exhausting week to say the least...
Happy New Year, Dave I hope this isn't a sign what the New Year going to be like, hopefully it's all that bad luck for the entire year is done and out of the way now
Hi Dave ! Hopefully no one got hurt with those derailments ! seems quite a string of missfortune on the rails. Hope your family had a blessed and happy Christmas and New Year, as well. Seems like Aiden really enjoyed his birth day party as well; a special time for a special young man! We are going to have a great year this year, I'm sure of it. Just got to stay positive.

WOW! What a horrible stretch of trouble! I'm sure we will see some of the aftermath. That detector has paid for itself again, huh? Just stay safe Dave.

@@ThatsDavesOtherDoings And yet, the coal keeps moving. That says a lot for your team. When you posted the short stating that 4 hoppers were on their side, I gasped! I hope that turnout gets back in service very soon.
Wow Dave, what a week indeed. You lost a few hoppers too. May I ask how many MOW personnel do you have? Weather sure does play havoc on a railroad. It's Sunday evening and the big snow is almost here. Stay safe out there and thanks for sharing a fun time on the railroad.
Appears to be a" little engine that could" operation. Fraught with all the problems of budget woes, vs good ol down home ingenuity and if it aint broke dont fix it, specially on a Friday affernoon.

Hey Dave thanks for the video. Question, isn't there a way you guys could lock those doors up while in travel to prevent them accidentally opening? Some kind of pin system perhaps
Bearings go bad over many years of use, sometimes the seals break and coal dust and moisture get in the bearing William. Thank you for watching the video and we wish the best for you my friend.
Oh No 😮, more cars destroyed 😢 🤔. That's not good 😢😐😢. I'll have to melt down that beer can collection and start building a few new ones 😂. Will be with a friend of mine in a few days, at this rate, your might be in need of some. We'll see what he has and be back to ya... Cross fingers, it's a new year getting started 😊.😏
Holy Carpathia batman! Now you're down one car. You got some real finnicky tracks it seems. I bet you have a gremlin infestation. Once you get those, its really hard to get rid of them. Are you guys going to fix that car or does it get scrapped? 👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣
Wow, that derailment was bad. I hope everyone;s OK. It looks like the car was patched just above the failed discharge door. I wonder if the two are related. Any thoughts?
I rather doubt that was related to the patching, it has been patched for a long long time Eric. Really appreciate your watching the video and we wish only the best for you my friend.
Dave how many y coal cars do you keep in reserve to replace ones in need of repairs? Second question, do you repair the truck sets when the bearings freeze up or do you scrap them out?
It developed an over heating problem and is currently being studied by the techs Jim. No one's saying much about it, so that is all I know. It took Henry Ford a good many tries before he got his first car to be right also, so this is just like that. Trial and learn and develop a better product in the process. Really appreciate your watching the video and we wish only the best for you my friend.
Yes we do have some spares Bryan. They also keep on repairing the cars so a car is usually not in the shop for more than a day or two then it goes back in service. Really appreciate your watching the video and we wish only the best for you my friend.
Looks like as the saying goes, when troubles come they come in legions. You will probably like this podcast: KunstlerCast 416 - Bill Moyer on Reviving and Restoring the US Railroad System You may google it to get the link, or if you include a contact email address in the notes to each podcast, I can send you the link.
We have bearings from both Timken and Brenco, both go bad over many years use, jointed track and a lot of curves like we have plus the heavy coal loads is hard on bearings Wasatch Range Railway. Really appreciate your watching the video and we wish only the best for you my friend.
One car at a time and you will have a good excuse for new/used cars. Visit Habibi's used hopper cars and camel sales. Tell them Ed sent you. I just read a WWII history about Churchill's dirty tricks saboteurs. It seemed that the reinforcement trains headed to Normandy were stopped by wheel boxes that ground themselves into submission. It seems that by night the saboteurs put a grinding compound in axle boxes that caused failures on cars in the trains. Enjoy the overtime pay.
We shipped two ocean vessels to China last year Paul, but we are not shipping anymore to them, the price we would be getting is less than what it costs to produce the coal. All of our coal now is for domestic power plants and one cement plant. Really appreciate your watching the video and we wish only the best for you my friend.

so much to do, so little time. don't overwork yourself. What would cause the bearings to lock Up? Thanks Dave, keep warm.
Bearings go bad over many years of use, sometimes the seals
break and coal dust and moisture get in the bearing William.
Thank you for watching the video and we wish the best for you my friend.
Tough way to finish out the year and start a new year. Any cause known for derailment? Disaster averted.
Looks like they will need to get some new cars
What is the update on the autonomous cars?
Ya think maybe a bad beating caused a roll over maybe combined with other defects?
Holy Carpathia batman! Now you're down one car. You got some real finnicky tracks it seems. I bet you have a gremlin infestation. Once you get those, its really hard to get rid of them. Are you guys going to fix that car or does it get scrapped? 👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣
Wow, that derailment was bad. I hope everyone;s OK.
It looks like the car was patched just above the failed discharge door. I wonder if the two are related. Any thoughts?
I rather doubt that was related to the patching, it has been
patched for a long long time Eric. Really appreciate your watching the video and we wish only the best for you my friend.
Dave, we don't say "fix a joint", it's "roll a joint" 🤣
Not on a railroad lol.
Dave how many y coal cars do you keep in reserve to replace ones in need of repairs? Second question, do you repair the truck sets when the bearings freeze up or do you scrap them out?
Dave, is there a wye or some way of turning equipment around on your railroad?
"How Bout That"
What happened with the self powered hopper car?
It developed an over heating problem and is currently being
studied by the techs Jim. No one's saying much about it, so
that is all I know. It took Henry Ford a good many tries before
he got his first car to be right also, so this is just like that. Trial
and learn and develop a better product in the process. Really appreciate your watching the video and we wish only the best for you my friend.
Do you have spare cars to replace bad ones or just run short till it is fixed?
Yes we do have some spares Bryan. They also keep on repairing
the cars so a car is usually not in the shop for more than a day
or two then it goes back in service. Really appreciate your watching the video and we wish only the best for you my friend.
Looks like as the saying goes, when troubles come they come in legions.

So much weight On the coal cars. I have never seen a rail Bust .. time for a new patent. On rail road tracks. Later.
What caused the derailment ?
Hi Dave & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Dave & Friends Randy
Are the hot bearings all from one manufacturer?
We have bearings from both Timken and Brenco, both go
bad over many years use, jointed track and a lot of curves like
we have plus the heavy coal loads is hard on bearings Wasatch Range Railway.
Dave takes vacation and the place falls apart. It’s all your fault. Guess you better start working more! 365 days a year seems fair. 🤭
Why the squealing wheels?
Maybe time to invest in some new cars, or newer!
Question where is the coal being shipped? Hope it's not China
We shipped two ocean vessels to China last year Paul, but
we are not shipping anymore to them, the price we would be
getting is less than what it costs to produce the coal. All of
our coal now is for domestic power plants and one cement
plant. Really appreciate your watching the video and we wish only the best for you my friend.
The coal cars laying on the ground is not a good sigt
No we had a bit of a misfortune happen over the holidays Richard..... sigh
Mmm, sounds to me with those old junk rails you moved back The Right Hand Don't Know What Left Hand Doing !!!! Watch they'll all be moved back , Ha, Ha. Then they will be cusing again, guaranteed
looks like this coal company and railroad is going belly up not keeping up on maintance and the CEO wants all the money.
