- The crisis of masculinity, the politics of films, the tenderness of Kumbalangi Nights, breaking the cycles of hurt in our lives, love, intimacy and abandonment are some of the things we talk about in this episode. Kumbalangi Nights directed by Madhu C. Narayanan and written by Shyam Pushkaran is a beautiful film worthy of many discussions. Here's making space for one more and hoping that it resonates with you.
We (your hosts Karan and Aniket) are scriptwriters, film nerds and suckers for good stories. In the many discussions on films that happen on the internet we found a lack of spaces that discuss characters i.e. the humans within the film universe and the many ways in which these characters become a representation for us as individuals, societies and cultures we come from. In Their Shoes is a podcast series where we deep dive into characters from films in every episode and try to understand ourselves & the people in our lives through it.
Here are the chapters:
00:00 Intro
00:25 Animals & Humans
04:00 The Men of Kumbalangi
20:20 Shammy the Perfect Villain
26:30 The Politics of Films
31:50 Sajji & Bobby
38:00 The Transformation
52:10 Break The Cycle of Hurt
56:46 The Two Houses
59:00 Abandonment

So glad that you saw this! Thank you for making such a tender, heartfelt and beautiful film.
We would love to have a chat with you sometime and have a conversation around the themes of the film. ❤️
OMG 😮. I thought i understood the movie. But the Shammi being the villain to the 3 and how saji brought the women home just like his father just blew my mind. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it 🌻
Do share it with your friends :)
The point of Shammi being the perfect villain to each of the protagonists was 🤯. Didnt think of it like that.
And played so masterfully by Fahadh!
Very detailed discussion about the movie. Loved it. The way you discussed the human emotions i am refering another Malayalam movie (2024) Aattam (the play)by Anand Ekarshi(Debut as director)
9:26 Hey Guys.. great podcast. Loved the discussion.
Only a correction at 9.26 (and thats probably due to incorrect subtitle shown in Prime) is that Saji tells the doctor that him and the brothers are hurt due to people calling them as 'born to many Fathers' and not as the subtitle says 'Fatherless'.
Ah, thank you for that correction. Glad you loved it :)
This movie feels like a breeze.❤❤
yes, it does ❤
Watched this movie 3 times already but your podcast made me realise I missed out on a quite a few of the finer details, will watch it again. Cheers!

What's your opinion on the narratives "A family without woman is a chaos", "There is always a woman behind a man's success"!!
Generalised narratives without context don't hold much value for a discussion. Behind the larger narrative is the lived life of a human who is flawed and trying to survive in this complex world of ours. That is why we want to focus on characters and then evaluate them with such larger narratives. Hope this helps :)
