Cover the law regarding the selection of jurors because we all know that there are going to be delay tactics and requests for new trails based on the idea of a tainted jury pool.
The thing that's terrifying about this to me is the public response compared to Nixon. Nobody, including Nixon himself, considered it controversial that he should be a political pariah after what he did, and he did a lot less than Trump. The fact that Trump is willing to claim that this is a partisan witch hunt and have a substantial number of people actually believe him is a terrifying sign that America is getting worse.
I agree. Nixon did break laws and use government to get things he wanted. In his resignation speech Nixon "resigned for the good of the country" The world has changed. People have "Hey Google" and "Hey Siri" in their house and phones. I'm not sure how much the mind set on what is privacy has shifted.
Agreed. Nixon at least had the decency to resign when he was caught, and the party had the decency to disavow him. There are way too many people who are not only totally willing to pretend Trump didn't get caught but, even worse, to pretend that there was nothing wrong with what he did. It's staggering.
Not only did they document all that happened behind the scenes, they even documented that they knew that what they did was illegal. You would think that once you send an "alternative" set of electors to go through with the coup, you would at least have the credible-deniability-presence-of-mind to not call these people internally "fake electors", but they did.
Don't write down your crimes hey. Don't involve others in your crimes. Don't tell anyone about your crimes. I wouldn't be surprised if his Google search history contains the phrase "how to illegally interfere in an election". As we know from True Crime channels - criminals ALWAYS Google their crimes.
Remember when we told people there's no underlying conspiracy of a bunch of people to do *whatever*? This is why, because that many people, can't keep their mouths shut. But Trump supporters will say, Trump got caught doing "nothing wrong", BUT that "Brainless Joe Biden" has some sort of massive conspiracy that include over 1400 court cases, and hundreds of different judges, lawyers, DOJ officials, and a bunch of democratic politicians. Yet they can't find one single solid piece of evidence. So Biden is both barely conscious, but also so much of a criminal mastermind that he's managed to have Thousands and thousands of republicans, Democrats, indipendants, judges, doctors, lawyers, cops, FBI agents, reporters, and who knows what else, and no one has provided a single shred of evidence. 😂

That would matter if it was a free speech case. It’s not. If you were crazy and thought you could rob a bank legally it would still be a crime whether you thought it was true or not.
@@tracyscanlon6142 It's still relevant, because it's further evidence that Trump has been lying about the whole thing. If absolutely nothing else, it's a strong data point that could help jurors to reach a decision.
This conspiracy was no secret, we watched most of it unfold before our eyes. What's amazing is that we are here 2.5 years later finally holding someone to account for it.
I could be wrong, but I think most of the Department of Justice and possibly even Joe Biden were extremely reluctant to build a case against a former President. To even start, they wanted a lot of evidence, both from witnesses and in more forensic form. This was complicated by the revelations of what Trump decided he was entitled to take when he left the White House, from classified documents to antiquities that had been loaned by Israel. Biden and the Department of Justice wanted to protect themselves as much as possible from the inevitable and entirely predictable accusations of political bias and campaign interference. Trump had already accused the Obama administration of interfering with his 2016 campaign when an investigation started into Russian interference in that election.
Never would have happened either if he'd kept his mouth shut about the FBI raid on his property. Or just returned the documents they subpoenaed. His broadcasting it like he did made it impossible to ignore and let slide.
People still 100% believe Trump and everything he says. He could nuke the entire state of California, say he did it because the "radical left" and people would still vote for him.

I read the indictment front to back as I did with the documents case and again I'm blown away. Trump's entire defense hangs on 'Free Speech' to speak out and be heard. But while you can say just about anything you like, you cannot independently act on those beliefs in ways that attempts to interfere, harass or intimidate. Smith and his team have clearly and very methodically laid out those actions in context with the protected speech of Trump and his co-conspirators. So there is going to be no confusion by any reasonable jury on where the free speech ends and where the crime begins. Every time Trump's counsel makes the free speech argument Smith's team is going to clarify.

I understand that the justice system is the justice system and not a means for reflex or emotional fuelled action against dangerous people. All the same it is remarkable how Trump is still given so much leeway to incite/defame/grossly insult and undermine even the most fundamental accepted standards of conduct. Boris Johnson attempted to do proportionally the same in Britain (aided by partisan newspapers and other media companies and die-hard elements of his party), but the different political and social culture in Britain led to his quicker rejection by his party and the public and his being forced into resigning from parliament before the consequences properly caught up with him. Johnson doesn't appear to have the means to resurface that Trump does.
The difference in the US is that Republican members of Congress know that they could lose reelection by pissing off 10-15% of their voter base. While in office Trump's team installed numerous allies into many of the state level republican parties. Look what happened to the Republican US representatives that voted for his impeachment? most lost primary challenges in 2022. I am certain that only a few elected Republicans actually like Trump. Most of them are just trying to hold on until he fades away. I guarantee many of them are hoping he gets convicted and loses the 2024 election so the party can finally move on. It's my understanding of the UK's system that the majority party can remove the PM and then choose another one from within the party, so they don't lose too much politically. In the US, Congress doesn't choose the President so voters in each representatives district would likely feel very upset if their representative removed the person they voted for from office.

the fact a coup was attempted makes me thing that in the near future we might see more events like this. especially if we have a president much like Trump again.
You are right. But fortunately this time it was a half-hearted coup attempt by amateurs. Think seriously about how it could go down if just a few smart and well prepared people were controlling the situation. Paralyze Congress and the Senate with conflicting election results. Neuter the courts and the justice department. That just leaves the military and media to deal with. And he had aleady stated as to how he wants to control the media. Declare a national state of emergency. Control the message. Two candidates. Both claiming to be the winner. Who makes the decision in the military as to who they answer to? It sounds simplistic and not possible for the United States of America. But the real reason it could happen is that a facist like Trump has so much public support. They would love to see this sort of strong man approach even if it hurts them indvidually.
I think you americans flatter yourselves a bit too much. A coup? Public unrest is what it is. You see, elsewhere out in the big world, when someone attempts a coup, they all have firearms in order to strongarm themselves in position to take the power, usually backed by portions of some sort of military.

That is what they are doing... They got create this as they go, but there is no precident so the JUDGES got sort this out as it goes on. As they might just put his ass under house arrest for 20 years, and strip his right to run, because they can't figure out in time how to do prison.
They have to do that till they can build a presidential suite to a prison for him as well lol. Again this all new for USA. I mean other countries done this but first time is always the craziest. If any of us threatened the DOJ, a judge, a DA, or incited our base to threaten or attack all three, we would be held indefinitely without bail until trial. He gets keep doing exactly what he is facing indictments for. Inciting violence and lying endlessly about a stolen election that never was stolen. Its one of the moments where all we need right now is for our criminal justice system to have the balls to put him in cuffs and drag him off to jail. Today. We don't have that tho. They fear him and his base and that pisses me off. if I was heading the DOJ, Trump would have been held in jail for years already. One dangerousness hearing would do it. There are mountains of evidence that he is both a flight risk and cannot stop inciting violence. That is more than enough but no one will do it. Its infuriating. I feel like if he doesn't go to jail for any of these crimes, it may be time for a different brand of justice. Sick to death of the two tiered system where the rich and powerful get away with everything and the rest of us can get killed for holding a phone.

Could those two election workers sue Trump for defamation?
I believe they already are.
Defamation requires the statement made about these people be false, and made either knowing it to be false or with reckless disregard for the truth. They're also regular private citizens rather than public figures (public figures can expect more public comment so the requirement for defamation is higher). So yeah, they probably have a pretty strong case for defamation.
@@Melesniannon Note that "knowing it to be false or with reckless disregard for the truth" only applies to public figures. Being false is good enough for private citizens to be defamed.

What is a gross insult and what are it’s implications?
Well Johnson just got kicked out of office. (T**** got impeached twice but he has the senate) Jack is going to send T**** to prison,T*****started to run for president again so he could cry interference.

Trump to Pence: "You're too honest"
What kind of demented and stupid insult is that???
The kind Trump would think is an insult. To him, honest people are beneath his level of cunning and deception
@@labadfWhich is ironic considering a big part of why some of the Republican party are throwing him under the bus is because the man just can't shut up and stop incriminating himself on social media when his freedom and life depend on it.
Seems like great wealth comes at the price of your self-awareness.
You forget they're politicians. Calling a politician honest is like calling a rocket scientist a toy maker.
I'm having flashbacks to when I was once fired from used car sales because I was "too nice".
except he wasn't honest enough to let others know about the plan ...
"In response, the Defendant told the Vice President, "You're too honest." That's pretty much the worst thing you can be in trump's mind.
He should be using that in his campaign. "Vote Pence, even Trump says he's honest."
@@simonharris4873 As mentioned in the video, he's literally selling merch based on it. That wasn't a joke - it's right there on his campaign website's store.
WOW! That "Too Honest" t-shirt is too funny...
Considering the context of the "Too Honest" statement was 'Too honest to commit a felony and go to prison'.
Which he just so happened to leave out... How honest of him.

Has Ruby Freeman sued *rump for defamation? His claim she is "a professional vote scammer" shows falsehood and malice. Eagle Team, assemble?
The truly frightening thing about all of this is that the person who will actually dismantle our democracy is going to use this as a guide of what needs to be done better/prepared for better.
I.e. someone was watching how well these bumbling buffoons managed to do in their plan and saying “I can do better.”
As much as I don’t like Pence, making shirts that say “Too Honest” is baller move.
Honestly I'd buy that shirt just for the meme.
He is a traitor to the American people.
As someone from Indiana, it’s pretty bold.
I could like Pence if it turned out that he never heard Trump's campaign and he didn't know what the pLaTfOrM was (even in sarcasm, saying Trump had a platform is too generous). But since he saw what DJT was I'd never trust anyone who supported The Donald politically.
Pence’s biggest fault is possibly being to conservative on social issues. Morally speaking, there’s very little he can be criticized on. That same hard core conservatism which informed his social views also made him strong enough to do the correct thing during a period of national chaos.
I just want to take a moment to appreciate how you use an actual bald eagle sound effect when advertising your legal firm.

I almost wish several of the republican senators had tried to go along with Trump's plan so maybe he could somewhat fulfill his campaign promise to "drain the swamp" by taking them down with him. As someone from Alabama, I specifically want Tubberville out. War eagle.
Well, he wasn't a senator in 2020, so....
Tuberville is holding up the military appointments to keep them open in case Trump becomes president again; so Trump can put his people in place and control the military.
@@drakky3051 Huh, thanks for the correction, my memory must be glitching. Maybe because he was running in 2020 and was in the news quite a few times with Trump?

When Trump said "Leave it to me and the Republican Congressmen". That to me implicates half of Congress as co-conspirators. I hope we see some juicy texts come out once the trial starts. Be funny to see half of Congress hauled out by the military.
Gossar, Biggs, Brooks are the big ones that are guilty.
Gaetz, graham, and hawley need to be charged.
They should also press charges for insane violence against them. They should be criminal charges for Giuliani as well.
I’d be willing to give a pass to Giuliani and others if they flip and appear as witnesses. Well, maybe they wouldn’t make such good witnesses, given their history as massively blatant liars.
Inciting violence? "Insane violence" is correct but technically not specifically outlawed.

Everyone, not just lawyers, *has* to say allegedly in cases like this. Trump hasn't gone to court yet and this hasn't been legally proven true. If you present it as if it is true before the court finds it so, you can be sued. Duh

@@obits3 The point of the op was that if that last crucial step involved someone other than the VP, he would've stood there and let it happen, like he did with the rest of it. I'm incredibly grateful that he made the right choice, but to be perfectly honest it seemed more like self-preservation with an eye toward the future than standing up for what's right and just. If he thought they could've gotten away with it with no consequences, I think he does it.
These conspirators were all lawyers and apparently determined that the consequences of their actions would be so slight that the risk was more than worth it. If they end up with nothing more than a slap on the wrist then they were absolutely right and others can feel free to do the same in the future.
the fact a coup was attempted makes me thing that in the near future we might see more events like this. especially if we have a president much like Trump again.
We will see this again in 2024.
I think you americans flatter yourselves a bit too much. A coup? Public unrest is what it is. You see, elsewhere out in the big world, when someone attempts a coup, they all have firearms in order to strongarm themselves in position to take the power, usually backed by portions of some sort of military. What happened on jan. 6 was essentially what amounts to protesters squeezing their way through incompetent police officers who didn't know how to lock a door.
Unless some sort of visible example made there will be bastards teeing up attempts until one of them succeeds. The prize is nothing less than world domination. There can be no higher prize to psychopaths & powerhungry machievellian sorts.
