    First off… what an intro! Hilarious and awesome metaverse you created there. Love it.
    This is exactly what I was hoping would happen when I made my intro video last spring! I was hoping people would take what I did and tweak it and mod it to their needs. I didn’t want to release “plans” or sell the hives because everyone has different needs. (I will eventually do a build video with the mods I plan to make in version 2.0 as well as talk about my results after using this concept for a whole season. Stay tuned.) What you’ve done here is fantastic! I love all the thought that went into the pest prevention. Really great work.
    As far as heaters, I don’t think you’re going to need them. You built a nice tight hive with adequate insulation for your region. If I haven’t needed heaters up here with boxes that aren’t as tight as yours, you definitely won’t need them! Also, I would highly recommend leaving out a frame and doing the 7 frame system like I have. 8 extra deep frames will be very tight. By using my “follow board” spacers, I can take out a spacer to make room for inspections, remove one frame at a time and put them right back. There are NEVER any frames hanging outside the hive. Each frame is lifted, inspected, and replaced. This greatly reduces robbing pressure. Also, I highly recommend plastic foundation. These frames get heavy. You do NOT want foundationless comb that large. The way I put my foundation in was perfect. Just enough open gap space for them to do as they please right on the middle. That’s where the queen cells form. (Not down at the bottom!)
    And remember, this is version 1.0! You’re going to tweak this eventually! I’m going to have significant changes for my 2.0 hives.
    Gold ⭐️ for you!

      I am glad you liked it. Making myself walk between your hives was a pain in the butt and the echo from my basement was hard to deal with. Now, we need to develop the Vino Farm game for the iPhone where you maintain your bees and if you screw up the Russians chase you around the bee yard. Anyway, I will be building 8 of these in total and I have added some drawn plastic foundation comb to the frames. If all goes well and mother nature cooperates I will be adding the girls from the red hive to the bee bard tomorrow. I will have to add a queen excluder and place any comb with brood above until it hatches. It should be an adventure. Thanks for being out there Jim I really appreciate you. Take care.

      With the 3-dimensional aspect of the bee ball, I wonder if a 10-frame makes more sense than 8. I have 2 8-frame setups as well as a 4+4 nuc box. Once spring is really here, I intend to build some 10-frame gear to try it out. Iowa: Gardening Zone 5

    • @vinofarm
      @vinofarm 2 роки тому +1

      @@DougMcHone I went with 8 since that’s all I had. After making the extra deep frames and realizing they would be harder to pull out with all 8 in the box, I decided to just use 7 per hive. However, 7 extra deep frames has the surface area of 13 regular deeps. So the “8 frame” deep+medium cavity with 7 frames is like having a 13 frame deep brood box. The tall, narrow orientation is better for the bees in a cold climate since it’s easier for the bees to move around vertically than horizontally across 10 frames when it’s freezing cold.

    • @DougMcHone
      @DougMcHone 2 роки тому

      @@vinofarm my only rebuttal is the options at the local farm stores. All they carry for an emergency medium is 10-frame. I've even considered building a ledge to the top of the 8-frame bee barn for just this reason.

    I really like your pull out oil tray configuration. We ran heavy insulated hives here in central Minnesota. You absolutely will not need the heaters. Unless you end up with poor queens again. Getting the feeling those ant leg traps will get mess up, rainwater diluted or something. Seems like just one more thing to maintain but who knows? Spraying the hive legs, stands with permethrin and tops of the inner covers with cheap bulk cinnamon got rid or our ant problem. We put up a short clip of ants refusing to cross over cinnamon. Hoping you can get some good strong non shipped local queens. Kim Flottum, " don't wasted your time with dinks".

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  2 роки тому +2

      Hi mike. I use the heaters so the queens can lay all winter and the bees don't have to cluster to keep warm. I will provide supplemental heat to keep the ambient tempo of the hive around 70F. The oil traps do work. I have been using them for the last two years and they work great. NO ANTS MAKE PAST THE MOTE. I don't know who Kim is but she should really stay away from the dinks. :-)

My hives are all set up based on his old model with Vivaldi boards. I like his new design but don’t have the skills to build my own so I’m just going to stick with the Vivaldi boards. @@BugFarmerBees I'm sad to report that my first hive just perished! After close inspection and cleaning the hive, there were literally zero varroa, which was amazing. What I think happened is that I receive a package of Southern Stock bees, and they simply could not handle the cold. Because there were four frames packed with honey but they would not move over and starved on the two frames where the cluster was. Very sad. But, I learned a lesson. I will always get northern bees now, or requeen from norther stock. And possibly wrap them stronger. Yet was happen, with the organic methods I used to feed them, they never had varroa. Thanks Bug Farmer

      @@BugFarmerBees well it's in the 60s and overcast here it's actually supposed to get to 70. I decided to experiment with some open feeding with almost two to one sugar syrup and ProHealth. The bees seem to dislike the smell of the ProHealth.

      @BugFarmerBees  2 роки тому

      This time of year I would be feeding 1:1 sugar. They don't need to store food this time of year they need to eat and pull comb. I open fed 3 gallons of 1:1 last week and the girls went nuts for it. I didn't add anything to the syrup but I did put some lemon grass oil around the feeders to attract the bees.

    I love your enthusiasm! Are you a teacher? I think the young one and teens would also like learning from you.
    Vino recently post about a moisture problem. How will you combat that moisture problem seemingly cause by the lack of upper insulation. Thank you Bugfarmer. I would love to see a video of your life of how and what led you to keeping bees?

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you for the kind words. My hives are a bit different than Jim's hives in that I have a heating and cooling system built in to my hives. If you look at some of my other videos you will see the control box on top of my hives that provide ventilation as well as control the heat inside the hives in the winter. I provide the hives with a dry heat via a reptile heat lamp in the bottom of the hive. I will also be using my hive pillows in the control box in the winter to wick excess moisture out of the hive while providing insulation in the top of the hive. As far as what led me to become a beekeeper, well, one day I was on UA-cam and I saw this guy installing a flow hive in the middle of a field. I kept watching over the next year and realized it is something I would like to do. Here is the video that got me started :ua-cam.com/video/dxbww1f7MOE/v-deo.html Thanks for stopping in to have a look and I hope to see you in future comments. Take care Timothy.

I have been keeping a eye on Jim’s video’s for quite a while now and he has done great yes he took a monster hit a while back but I think he is on the correct path and I hope this works out great for you also . I do not agree on the light bulb idea . I think it is not needed and also I think it will have the bees eating more stores up also it will be to bright inside the hive . The bees like total dark by it being bright I think it will also cause them to not lay work near the bottom an yes I know it would be more in the winter time but early spring an still cold it may hinder start up brood building. Just a thought hope it works out great for you , thanks

      Hi Kathy. It is important to know the heat lamps I use are ceramic and put off no light. They are commonly used to keep reptiles and turtle warm. Also, I have been heating my hives for four years now and have discovered the bees actually consume fewer resources in the winter if they don't have to generate heat for the hive. Watch this video to see what my bees look like inside the heated hive. They just mill around waiting for spring in their bee condo. :-) ua-cam.com/video/YUHTlJwW_q8/v-deo.html. I have a question on starting a new hive to a new built bee barn. If I buy a Nuc it comes with frames but those frames are too small for the bee barn. If I buy a box it is suggested to place drawn comb but not many people do bee barn size frames. How do you start a new hive into a new bee barn?

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  8 місяців тому

      You can remove the drawn comb from the NUC frames and use it for the top foundation for 5 of your frames. Or.... you can use other drawn comb, add it to the bee barn, add the queen from the NUC, shake in some bees from the NUC, then add a queen excluder with an empty deep on top. Put the NUC frames in the upper deep and add some empties on the sides. In no time the queen will be laying below and the bees from the upper box will hatch and back-fill the upper deep with honey. :-)

      Other Version 2: www.tinkercad.com/things/iTEPRdxtohj-bug-farmer-hive-stand-ant-mote
      The bulbs are 50 watt reptile heating lamps. They do not put off any light. . I used just a single bulb in the bee barns because of the heavy insulation. Here is the Amazon link to the bulb: a.co/d/4Fyg14F and the bases: a.co/d/1bpi69E. When I heat the bee barns I set the temp to 70F in the winter. I hope this answers your questions. We have been seeing a lot of adults in the oil trays this past month as the population of bees is starting to grow but I hope the guardian is effective for you and you don't have to worry about that since you will have the heat diffuser in instead of the oil tray.

      I guess you could catch the queen, move her to the bottom of the be barn, add a queen excluder, add a deep box and move the frames into the deep and put a lid on it. The bees should spell the queen and go through the queen excluder to be with her. OR... You could not use a queen excluder and just set the box on top and hope the queen goes below by herself. Bug Farmer,
    I have just begun my journey into the world of beekeeping, and I have been watching Jim's videos, so when he mentioned your channel I had to take a look, especially since your climate is closer to mine than Jim's is. I asked Jim a question about his design, but I figured I would ask you as well, since you did the same thing. When you made your XL frames you combined a deep and a medium, why didn't you do a double deep frame? From what I have been reading most resources say that the typical brood configuration is two deep boxes. As I get ready to attempt to design and build my own 'bee barn' i just wanted to know if there were any specific reasons why I should not build by frames to be double deep sized.
    TIA
    Bill

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  2 роки тому

      Hi Bill. Honestly either configuration will work. With the exception of last year when I tried a single deep for the brood chamber (huge fail BTW) I have always used a deep and medium combo. I have never had the girls run out of space. That said, Jim may be doing a double deep in his V2 hive which is under construction I think. As far as your specific question the answer is no, their is no reason why you shouldn't. Build what you think your bees would like and what you feel like you can easily manage. I can say that the deep/medium combo frame is heavy when filled with brood and resources so understand a double deep will be a heavy frame to pull during inspection. Sorry for the long answer but I hope it comes close to giving you the information you are looking for. Thanks for stopping in to my channel and taking time to comment. I hope to see you in future comments. Take care.

    Thats great! Is there some way to provide ventilation? A issue I have learnt the hard way is you can actually seal up your hives too much! Ensure they have enough ventilation (Air movement) to remove the Carbon Dioxide to ensure they do not suffocate! The first time I sealed up my hives they had no issue with heat “Thanks to you other great idea of the heaters” but they did not have the required air flow needed. Not one to rain on someone"s parade, but here I go anyway. If you don't have the carpentry skills and shop equipment displayed in this video {no doubt your hives are beautiful} Buy a polystyrene hive instead. Might be a real cost saver in the long run with the price of quality building materials these days. Insulated hives are definitely the way to go and It has really helped my bees survive. I think it has more to do with making temperature changes more gradual, giving the bees more time to react. Many of us have seen our hives looking good on a warm March day then be a dead out in April when we have temperature swings between daytime highs and night time lows in the early Spring months. The hives I've built and the hives I bought are all insulated now and its a great improvement here in Pa. Goes to prove why bees like tree cavities, nice thick wooden walls, Not the 1/2 inch wood of a Langstroth we try to force them to live in.

    I have reached out to Jim but he must be busy. I am taking a lot of heat from the haters here in Georgia for building a Bee Barn. Most do not understand the physics of insulation. But I did have one question as to if there was a condensation issue in the summer and if so would a screen bottom or vent top not resolve it?

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  2 роки тому +1

      As a fellow Georgian who has been battling hives beetles I would highly recommend against screened bottom boards. Just based on my experience. As far as summertime condensation I don't see where it would be a huge problem even if it did happen. Per Frederick Dunn the bees will utilize that moisture to drink. That said, I have noticed on Jim's Bee Barns that he does have the Valvaldi board on in the summer with screen covered vents in the top. That should be sufficient to relieve any condensation/moisture issue. Myself, I have the controller boxes stacked on top of my Bee Barn with two exhaust fans and screened covered vent holes so I think I will be okay as well. It's nice to know someone else in GA is operating a Bee Barn. If you would like you can send me some pictures and I will show them on my channel. I think people would be highly interested in them. Thanks for reaching out Thomas, I really appreciate you stopping in to have a look and thanks for taking time to comment. I hope I answered your question. Just remember this is my first Bee Barn and my first season with one. I don't think the extra insulation is a big deal in Ga because it will keep the summer heat out as well as keep the winter cold out. Take care.

      Not good. After years of trying I have determined the don't work for me. The guardian was the only entrance to the hive and I was swamped with hive beetles. In my opinion it's a gimmick. I actually did a video about it. Look through my library and you will see it.

      They look nice. Jim's Bee Barn Version 1 were wooden on the outside too. The version 1 hives inspired me to build these. His version 2 is the foam one. The advantage of the new ones is they are more easily built and lighter. My barns weigh a ton.

    Great video and we're excited to watch the progress of the Bee Barns. One thing on the Guardian BHE's, do you need a landing board for them to sit on? I thought I remember reading that you need a 90-degree corner at the bottom to keep the SHB's out. Good luck with the upcoming season!

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  2 роки тому

      I don't think a landing board is required. The guardian has holes in the board that the beetles fall through if they manage to get on it. Moreover, the beetles are supposed to have problem with the color red which is why the awning is red too. I do not want to provide a target for the beetles. Fingers crossed this works. :-). Thanks for stopping in Matt. I appreciate you taking time to leave a comment. Take care.

    what are the frame measurements??

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  2 роки тому +1

      Not sure. Here is what you can do. Stack a medium super on top of a deep super and hang a frame in the top box. Measure from the top of the hanging frame all the way to the bottom of the bottom box. Now subtract .5" That is the depth. The frame width is standard. I would give you the measurements exactly but they are all out in the hives. I hope this is helpful. Take care.

      Hi Troy. I don't think either one of us make How-To videos. We simply share our experiences as we learn beekeeping. Moreover, we continually try to break new ground, try new things, and try different approaches. The goal for me is to learn and to allow my mistakes to be visible to others who are learning so they can avoid my errors. Anyway, thanks for stopping in and for taking the time to comment. So your heating your hives is being done to keep the queen laying during the winter?! Isn't the whole point of winter to give everything a break?? Queens ramp up laying in response to nectar and pollen flows in addition to solstices (ie length of day). Queens are laying (small amounts of brood) right now here in south central PA and it is 31 F right now and tonight's temps will be 14 F. Bees will be burning through (honey/pollen stores) with large amounts of brood being raised so then starvation will become another issue to deal with even if you are providing supplemental heat. Hummm let the bees do their thing on their timeline. Guess we have over a year before we hear about any results you have from heating hives over the winter. How will you track temps? With a Broodminder?

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  2 роки тому

      Hi Nancy. I do heat my hives to keep the queen laying and resource consumption low during the winter months. . In this part of Georgia we get one nectar flow and it starts around March 1st. As soon as that flow is over that is pretty much it until a very small flow in the late fall. So in an effort to have strong hives in the spring and bees raring to collect the good stuff first thing in March, I keep the queen laying throughout the winter. I have been heating my hives for four years now and the bees do fine but will swarm early if I don't get them supered right away. This year I may get a few swarms because I will be working to get the girls moved into the bee barns which may impact my supering schedule. Another thought about supplemental heat. I don't draw any distinction between providing supplemental heat via a heat lamp, wrapping a hive in insulation, or bringing my bees into a bee shed as some of the large operators do, etc... If I were a bee in charge of leading a swarm to find a new home for the queen and the rest of the colony I would certainly choose a wall of a house where the inside is heated and provides a nice environment for the queen and her brood all year round as opposed to a hole in a log or a tree etc.. where the winters would be a a challenge for the colony. In short, given the choice, I think a bee would choose the controlled environment every time as a way to increase the likelihood of the colony to survive. Anyway, thanks for stopping in to have a look and also for taking the time to comment and share your opinions. It is much appreciated. take care and stay warm up there in PA. The Phil says you have 6 more weeks until spring. you're almost there. :-)

    • @BugFarmerBees
      @BugFarmerBees  6 місяців тому

      That is an interesting. Not many people would call out their own incompetence and inability to do beekeeping as a reason why a popular UA-camr would stop posting videos. You really shouldn't be so hard on yourself. I really don't think Jim quit posting videos because of you're incompetent. Chances are extremely high he doesn't even know you exist. Now, to be clear, I am not familiar with the word "fulish" because it doesn't exist in the English language but I suspect it may be a word that is quite common in a foreign dialect somewhere so I will have to infer its meaning based on its usage and placement within your statement. Based on the context I can only surmise it means brilliant, well thought out, informative, learned, or some other word associated with an individual who teaches. As a fellow UA-camr, I hate to see a viewer be so hard on themselves when they fail to grasp basic skills of any task shown in a UA-cam video. It really makes me, and other creators sad. To that end, let me assure you that what we UA-cam creators do is produce entertainment for the viewer. Nothing more, and nothing less. With this in mind I simply ask that you not be so critical of yourself and just enjoy the content. Thank your for taking the time to share your insecurities with the entire world in this public comment section but I assure you your incompetence did not cause Vino Farm to quit posting UA-cam videos.
