Cecil Taylor is brilliant. And those who play with him are also genuine artists of sound creation ... Lovely!

Cecil didn't seem to enjoy this interview, but I think that he was having fun. This was one of his best interviews.
I saw him play at the Village Vanguard with Tony Oxley. I approached Cecil about me being part of one of his group in the future. He wasn't interested. Ha! I had to try.

Wow, pure genius. Amazing CT manages to get musicians worldwide to interact with him all these years.

Interesting. Sometimes when listening to this, I feel the same way.
It’s, perhaps, a question of the mood one is in. Sometimes, Cecil’s piano, as tumultuous as it can be, definitely doesn’t need the company of other instruments.

"THEY SAID IT" - So true, that's a truly free mind speaking to a young interviewer, or any of us. It's the best and worst of times to see the full scope of Cecil's despised journalists' abomination of truth and killing of creativity. I've been to lots of CT concerts over the years, and have had to endure many critiques, benevolent or less so, which completely went off the rails, more often than not simply regurgitating the old and stale. There are exceptions, most notably Gary Giddins, Morton & Cook et al, but mostly it seems that the critics are more reading than listening, and certainly not in-between ;-(.

56:04 - "And THEN we can trade." If you're honest to yourself and the e x p e r i e n c e that is attending TWO of his concerts, set apart by a dozen years, you'll have to admit that this whole interview is actually quite lucid and down-to-earth normal. If you love Lady Day, Pops and Lord Larry, you'll understand (emotionally) what he's talking about, even if you're not overly familiar with the Kabuki theatre. The human experience, as a listener or a musician or an active or passive artist in general, is not about analyzing, although that may be intellectually pleasing, it's about incorporating the effects of the arts into your system, your mind and muscles and it would be touching indeed for a musician who has followed his singular path as unflinchingly as Cecil has to see how the l i s t e n e r reacts to his music, even more after a 12-year span. Don't be put off by his gay French king demeanor, at least he i s gay, and a king of music.

Yes and no. He did not give interviews to promote his latest record. I think he really respected not only the music and himself, but held his interviewers to a very high standard.

The only American with this approach to percussion in Taylor's band was Gregg Bendian.
