Cecil worked with a lot of great drummers but his connection with Cyrille was on another level.

It's amazing how, one of the most creative forms of art ever created, (Jazz and non written music in general, from which free Jazz is probably the most creative) has been systematically set aside for commercial reasons and as in healthcare, politics, art, education etc. money poisons everything to the point of extinction or such impoverished conditions that make it economically impossible to exist. So, this films are very precious to me.

Well it’s difficult for jazz to continue to be relevant if the public does not hear it in a way that is accessible and fun. I appreciate Cecil Taylor’s art, but free jazz didn’t really help jazz to stay relevant to society. It’s just too difficult for most people to listen to.

Look at the world/countries around us, 1/2 the population is voting for fascist pig dictators… how would they have the mental ability to relate to hip cats playing some righteous free music… its the antipode of modern society, programed to enrich the elite… not think and feel free… Those cats broke free of all the chains and are riding on a glorious sonic chariot, traveling through deep space…

@@xentakis I'd have to agree. You'd have to be very naïve not to admit that jazz, let alone free jazz, can be a very esoteric art form even at the best of times.

This is real jazz mucccchhh respect for those that listen to contemporary jazz this jazz here is wayyyyyy different this is hard-core jazz nothing matches very unpredictable to some people sound like a bunch of noise n yet there's something beautiful about it can't quite put ur finger on it it is definitely an acquired taste for the ears this is a whole top level ain't for everyone I do respect it though

In the 80s, Cecil recorded a number of live performances in Germany on the FMP label. Some of the performances are piano/drum duets. My favorite one is when he plays with British guitarist Derek Bailey. An amazing piece of work.

This group was a miracle! Sam Rivers is a genius; Jimmy Lyons is incredible. And Cecil and Andrew are amazing! I saw them without Rivers but with Sirone. Just amazing! I actually had the great pleasure of sitting in on a music notation class Rivers taught and met him a year after. He was a great person!

Funny how the "this isn't music/I could play that" crowd are at the bottom (where they belong) and things only get better as the comments progress. A synechdoche of how the music has been gradually appreciated over the years?.

Hi, thanks for posting. Now we have 4 videos from this tour late fall 1969
(2 full Paris shows and half of Berlin). Unfortunatly there is a cut at 31:26 min, missing some 20 min at least (I have two low fidelity audio fragments from radio inserted in between, but not enough to make it complete. Do you have more video, or is it shortend like the Berlin video from WDR?
There must be a second show on this day, because they let the scores and sax on stage, like at the end of first show in Paris.
Miles played at the same date (Nov 4th 1969). His full video is issued.
    Thanks,
    Alex, Germany

What to make of Cecil Taylor's music(?)......the musician's are undoubtedly talented as they have to sustain a highly dissonant group improvisational format for a very long time. But the lack of any significant contrast in the music(?) gets tiresome to me. Even the most successful avant garde classical music pieces scales back on the dissonant intensity every once in a while. It does help they scale it down to just the alto sax and piano midway through. 30 minutes of this is about all I want to listen to at a time.......

its just ANOTHER form of music...not to your taste..there are notes and rhythms and dynamics and harmonies but they just don't add up in a way you like but that others do like(me of course-and i DO like all types of Jazz and Classical too)--its music for sure..no doubt about it..i would strongly say that its NOT an issue of definition ..but of taste..

Alas, you are not the minority who appreciate the sophistication and density of this music, you are part of the majority who don't.
If you want to try to "get" this music, try listening to it from beginning to end rather than skipping around to find something that catches your melodic interest. If you relax into it and let Taylor's music just take you where it wants to go (rather than fitting into your predefined expectations) you may be surprised how well it works.
