Great informative video! Those little wooden pieces can make all the difference 🙂 but I must say, half the time I do throw them out as well 😂 will try to use them more from now on I think 🙂
Thanka that helps! my acrylic paint wasnt always staying on my canvas, with strokes it would come off. Now I know why. THANK YOU AGAIN! Time to get me some gesso!
Answered my questions beautifully thank you. I'm new to acrylic painting after spending years loving watercolour. So important to begin properly and not fall into bad habits!! Look forward to viewing more exciting videos from your generous self. Thanks again
Found this incredibly helpful, I’ve never used those little wooden pieces! I’ve always thrown them out😳 thank you lovely 😘. I’m going to go watch your video on making gesso from home now, it’s so expensive to buy here in Canada.... xo
Joni Young Art Thank you Joni. The gesso video won’t actually be up until Wed as I had some technical difficulties loading it so had to swap them around,. But here’s the ingredients for you if you’d like to try: 1 part water, 1 part pva glue, 1 part talcum powder and 2 parts primer paint or any cheap white paint 😉 😍🎨🍷
This is really good info for someone like me who is totally clueless about painting. Lol! I have what may be an odd question but do you have any tips for preparing a printed paint by numbers canvas? Is there some sort of primer that can be applied without without it covering the printed picture and numbers? Thanks!
You have the loveliest hands. I'm not being a creepster😂 just thought you should know I really like your hands. They're really beautiful. Your mom and dad made some good hands and you did good job growing them.😂👍 they got my vote, hands down.😂 no pun intended,
I don't need the little bits of wood to create tension when I try to paint....My wife and 2 kids do that extremely well! 😂 But seriously, very useful video. Many thanks 👍
I wanted always to be honest and let me say that you're so lovely!! I mean your mood and eloquent presentation that leave me incredibly pleasant! Thank you!!
Hi, thanks tor your video, very helpful. just a couple of questions how many layers of gesso would i need to put on the canvas, and regarding blending is it easier to blend when i put the final coat of gesso on or wait for it to dry.
I would suggest at least 2 coats. I find it easier to blend with a wet background but it will mix with your colours however I personally like the effect. Good luck!
dee n Hi Dee, you on,y really need the tabs for larger canvases that begin to sag as they give you more tension. Often, priming your canvas does job anyway. If you still need more tension, I would improvise with tough cardboard or anything small that you can wedge into the frame. Good luck 👍🏻🎨🍷
I usually sketch what I’m going to paint on a canvas before painting. I’ve never used gesso but want to. If I do the sketch first will I be able to see it through the gesso. Or should I gesso first then sketch. Will it be hard to erase pencil marks if I gesso first?
from what i experienced, i gesso first before sketching because gesso is very opaque. it is kinda hard for me to erase sketching after gesso and it smudges from my experience, but i don't worry much since it will eventually be covered in paint
Sorry for the late reply Evan. I actually sketch with paint once I’ve used gesso. I used to use chalk which can be erased more easily. Pallet knives can also be used to erase paint too 😉🎨🍷
I find very few -almost none - canvas (at least in the U.S.) comes with these. Should I be buying them separately? I haven't noticed problems, but maybe it's that I don't know better.
You are a woman boss! 2 years and never knew about these woody things nor did my cheaper canvases probably come with holes for me to wonder (to give myself credit lol) ..however today I bought some from Joann 50% off the good stuff and notices there were holes on the back (have to search for the wood peckers though) and the first youtube result you talked about them - thank you!
U could find " buttons"/or " jig's" I'm not sure exactly what there called and I think u can find'em at like Lowe's. In like a home improvement store in the wood remodeling section.... 😏U've probably already found them but just in case u haven't 🤗
@@kakulchandra2648 At the end of the day a painting is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. I always take into consideration the length of time it’s taken to make my painting and then consider how much you would value your time at. Good luck with the process 🤞🏻🎨🍷
That’s a great question 😉 It’s actually more crucial than most realise. Without it, paint absorbs into the canvas too quickly. It’s like skating on sand without gesso, but with gesso, it’s like painting on ice 😃

thank you so much for the info, I'm doing some acrylic painting on canvas for the 1st time instead of gessoed paper and this helps a lot! :)

In all the canvasses I’ve bought I have never had one come with those wooden pieces, yet they often have the slots in the wood.

WHAT? I had no idea what those little wooden things were for OMG mind blown haha

Do we also need to add water on gesso or can gesso alone do the work?

I always wonderd what those wooden panels were for. Thank you for this video. Its realy helpfull. How do you store a painted canvas ?
True... I wondered the same. Today mystery solved.
Yeah 😄👍🏼
Thank you. I’m new at this and it’s helpful. Can I paint right after priming or wait how long please?
You can paint wet, especially if you need to blend.
I don't have gesso what to do, can I apply little of water on it before painting using acrylic ?
Ideally add some pva glue to water instead or you can you primer paint for wall if you have any left over. Good luck 👍🏻🎨🍷
@@paintandpinotinperth7868 thank you
Where's your gesso recipe? 🙏🏽
How much time does it take to dry before you started painting?
Wood thingy stretches canvas. got it. but why do the slots not line up? I feel like I still didn't really understand how to use them.
The little wood pieces don't fit my canvas .. any tips ?
Thank you!
Now days talcum powder has corn flour is this ok too if making your own gesso ?
Hi I have a question. Should we sand after to get it really smooth.
Should I do my sketch before or after I apply de yeso?
After. Gesso is to prime the canvas so that the paint sticks easier to it.
Thanks for information but what that white thing name?
Thank u
Where can I buy those wooden pieces if my canvases don’t come with them?
Thank youuuuuu
What is that white thing you poured to the canvas? sorry I don't speak English well, so i don't understand what were you saying 😓
It's Gesso, it's a fluid to prepare your canvas for painting. It can be found online or can be made at home🙃

Is two coats recommended?
How to paint on cotton Totebags
I have recently bought some canvases but no pieces of wood came with it and after watching this vide, I did check, the canvas kind of sags.
I tried but the holes dont line up on mine so I cant get them in when I eventually done one it fell out I couldn't force it in enough
my painting has now become quite saggy . what can i do to tighten the canvas ?the little wooden sticks are not available here. pls help
Put the canvas upside down and use a paint brush to paint water on the back and let it dry. That's what works for me
