Outstanding benefit to society through research: Bill Newman and the PALOH team

The Making a Difference Awards for Social Responsibility are held each year at The University of Manchester (‪@universitymanchester‬) to showcase the achievements of staff, students, alumni and partners of the University.
The World-first bedside genetic test to prevent babies going deaf initiative is the 2024 emerging impact winner of the 'Outstanding benefit to society through research' category. This project developed a fast, painless genetic test, approved for use in the NHS, which can identify such babies in time for them to be given another antibiotic, thus saving their hearing.
