No only in zone A and B they were ordered to leave. They cannot evacuate ALL of Florida. And they evacuated where the storm _surge_ was expected to hit (badly, in the beginning they feared it could be 10 to even 15 ft). This couple was flooded because of the heavy rainfall RAIN. So essentially these residents thought the worst was over, they had been lucky - and then the flood came. The surge retreated back into the ocean - but not the rainwater.

This is why you shouldn't live in Florida anymore it's definitely not safe. I can only imagine they'll face 3-4 hurricanes in a span of a month in the future with the way things are going.
Some areas of Florida have about the same risk of extreme weather events as anywhere else in the U.S. However, considering that Florida has the most coastline of any of the 48 connected U.S. states, the Gov’nr should have taken a better leadership role than just banning the mention of climate change from state documents and school textbooks.
There are dumb people that keep buying property in FL, no matter how expensive. Some people just don’t have the brains. FL is a disaster zone that should encourage people to move up north.
Everywhere has risks of natural disasters. Should we not build in tornado alley? In areas that can get big blizzards/ice storms? In areas prone to earthquakes? In areas with active volcanoes? In areas prone to wildfires? In areas where flash flooding/ mudslides occur? Where would you expect everyone to go? If anything out of everything I mentioned hurricanes are predictable. Everything else you'll get very little warning.
I am glad FEMA is helping these people but... I am really conflicted on people rebuilding in Florida. FEMA money is just wasted if its given to rebuild their houses over and over every year... at some point you need to force them to rebuild in another state, or only allow them to rebuild with concrete buildings etc. There is a reason home insurance is basically not available / scam / over-priced in Florida, because its not practical at least not the way the homes are built.
Honestly, I am surprised the death toll isn't MUCH higher. So many people refused to evacuate and didn't take the storm seriously. People getting tornado warnings going outside to look around when they hear the tornado coming. Having parties, going surfing, running generators indoors, not turning off their electricity as flood waters entered their homes. It truly is shocking that the number isn't higher. Glad for it, though. Hopefully the survivors who learned the hard way will take warnings more seriously next time.
More people left for this storm than any other storm in the past 7 years. That's why the death was so low. It could've been a lot worse. If Helene didn't come first a lot of people would've stayed and died in Milton.

I grieve with those who have lost so much, lives of loved ones, houses they thought were a fortress strong enough to withstand Milton and all the other tragedies we're seeing coming out of the mid-state area of Florida. I say that sincerely. Here's the question that comes to my mind: how did anyone expect to remain safe when living on reclaimed land from a swamp? Florida is mostly on reclaimed land that used to be the Everglades. The panhandle aside, that long peninsula is a giant swamp- nothing but flat lowlands. My dearest late mother-in-law had very sane advice for choosing a place to live and her #1 criterion was "don't live in a flood plain.", the rest of the list is short but easy, DON'T live, #2 near a volcano that has erupted in the past 2500 years, #3 on a fault line, #4 in the path of the northeast gale (we both have lived in New England coast all our lives. Remember George Clooney and The Perfect Storm?) #5 near a landfill, particularly a dumping ground for toxic waste-(most of you don't remember The Love Canal where 9 children on the same street died of cancer after living there for only a few years). There are other sane, safe rules for habitation like being hooked up to the town sewer and having a mailbox the carriers can get to easily, making the front of the house disguise the beauty inside and to the rear (this discourages burglary), having house insurance to cover as much as you can afford every month, grow your own herbs, plant wildflowers for the bees and butterflies and hang a feeder for migrating hummingbirds. The lesser list is long but just as obvious. I'm lucky to have found housing that fits all these criteria. Our backyard had an area of the typical suburban lawn but the other portion, much larger, was tilled every year to discourage small trees from sprouting and seeded with wildflowers. It was amazing to see who showed up to drink nectar, dine on seeds and fish for small aquatic denizens as we lived on an inlet of a saltwater harbour. The thing that slaps me upside the head, and though I recognize that many wouldn't have this choice, are the interviews with owners of flooded and destroyed property in which the same phrase echoed when asked if they were going to rebuild in exactly the same place that flooded about every five years, "We love the view." I find it very hard to sympathize with stupidity.

The water came from the sky 😂😂😂

Dikes keeps the river within its boundery. If a dike breaks or water comes too high, we have both active and passive flood zones.

@@kingjesus7926 regardless, where the water comes from, the Dutch know how to deal with it
I was born in NL. The Dutch solution includes levels of state intervention and funding that would horrify the average US Democrat. It's worth it, it keeps a generally rather happy and healthy, economically successful small country from having half of its most thickly populated areas under water at every Spring Tide. But the forces at work on some parts of the US Gulf coast would be beyond what even Dutch engineers could deal with.
@@carelgoodheir692 there are already dunes along the Florida coast. They could start to make those bigger.
And instead of building real estate (out of pure greed) inside low laying area's, like in Sarasota and Bradenton for instance; they could turn those low area's into natural flood zones.
Instead of doing nothing, they could do something. Yes, the storms and conditions are worse. No, 100% protection would not be possible, even with Dutch innovation. But 60% less damage for instance, would still be a lot less worse than what we see now.

But there are many places that are not prone to such massive devastation on a yearly basis. An earthquake can theoretically happen anywhere but it is much more likely on a fault line. Hurricanes can devastate places we normally wouldn't consider but coastal communities, especially on the gulf are definitely going to get hit over and over. It all depends on whether you want to risk it every year or if you want to mitigate those chances by living somewhere that it is much less likely to happen. I've lived almost my whole life on the Alabama coast but I won't live on the beach, and if and when it becomes more threatening where I live I will not remain here.

The ENTIRE state is a flood zone. If you left & returned to an empty lot, buy a house boat & sit it on your property & pray a tree doesn’t fall on it when the next hurricane comes because even a house on stilts can fall or fly apart. And buy boat insurance.
everywhere is a flood zone except the lake wales ridge and the garbage mountains. there are " mountains" in florida ( new new york) made of garbage.
That's a brilliant idea. Sort of a converted trailer into a houseboat. Now, you would have to have really strong anchor lines on the house.
@@SteeveeKeys Thank you 😊. After watching these poor people in FL deal with these storms year after year as if each one is new, I’m convinced they either 1-Are new residents from the northern states & got conned into buying a good deal 2-Have been there forever & just hope the next one takes their home so they can rebuild or 3-Just plain delusional.
We live in tampa and survived the storm. It was terrifying but we didnt flood in our neighborhood. My neighborhood is ravaged. Pray for us- we have a long road ahead of us!
#PrayForFloridaInUnitedStateOfAmerica.
Be smart and make a long-term plan to move from low lying areas of Florida or any other flood prone area. Having a secure home is important. Storms will only get worse.
If that is true then why is the worst hurricane to hit florida in the past? Also why did we recently have one of the longest hurricane droughts of 11 years? You aren't making sense. That is feelings based nonsense.
These ppl are wild. Y’all live in Florida but u crying talking about never thought it would happen. Weird af, are ppl THIS slow?
Just a reminder. Republican governor wants to defund early warning program and environmental study department
Just making random assertions now... the echo chamber is in full force.
Fact Check -- FALSE
Almost every whether channel in the country was reporting that a hurricane was on the way days in advance. I don't think throwing funds at an early warning program would have made a difference.
What about the people in Tennessee and North Carolina. They still need help
I'm genuinely asking... why do people want to live in Florida? I've never been there. What do people love about it?
The weather. Palm trees. No snow. Beautiful place most of the year
I love that its on the other side of the country from me. See, when someone says "beautiful most of the year"......that's someone who doesn't mind sweating in awful humidity. I almost feel guilty because southern Michigan has had probably the best three years of weather for my tastes that I can recall in a long time, so while its changing everywhere, that seems to be positive change for me here.
@WBrown-cg6kd The weather huh?🤔😆🤣
Google "Emerald Coast".

Just because you been down there 20 plus years and nothing has happened doesn't mean it's not going to happen you can't live in such a state and not think you will not be impacted by a major storm that's on top of the fact that they keep telling y'all that the storms are getting worse and you want to sit your dumbass down there and "ride it out"...
@@paulabrown6840why? It IS stupid to live in an area prone to extreme weather and then be surprised when your neighborhood is shredded.
I’m tired of subsidizing Florida
I would say any active volcano regardless of how long it's been since it erupted.
🙏🏾 CNN for stepping up on the global warming climate crisis messaging 🔥🙏🏾
Operation Popeye people. They have been controlling weather for decades. Look it up yourselves instead of gluing your face to CNN and believing every word. They actually fucking TELL YOU THAT THEY DO IT. Watching this garbage is your problem. Think for yourselves. Absolute zombies my God!!!
😂 Yes, yes. Paying the gooberment higher taxes, riding a bike & eating bugs will give them magic powers to "fix" the weather. 😂 Pathetic.
I want to know why no one is asking the hard questions to our congress about why THEY are not taking it upon themselves to come back and discuss funding. Do they know stuff that we don’t?
Probably. But they're congress. The 'deserve' all this time off of doing nothing.
Because the speaker of the House who is a Republican will not call them back. They said they gave them the 20 billion they asked for but all they did is allow them to spend next years budget now. Basically they would rather campaign and make the present administration look bad then do their job and I'm directly talking about the Republican controlled House of Representatives .
DeSantis, Scott, Rubio and other Maga politicians need to re-examine their priorities.
I live in NEW York! This news was shocked for me! I wish my people to be safe! ❤❤❤
I think the destruction of the Amazon rainforest is causing this adverse action!!
That is not helping either, but I bet it is cars burning fossil fuel.
You people are acting as if we've never had hurricanes before and that somehow humans are responsible for them.. We had major hurricanes far more frequently in the early 2000s, and the strongest hurricane ever recorded was in the 70s. This is completely normal. Hurricanes also regulate the earths temperature. Less hurricanes could be a bad thing.
@@r33thwow. Just wow.
