He saw 10-year old me all excited as he slowly rolled by, he smiled and gave it a huge loud rev that echoed off the building and had everyone looking around. It was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Yeah, it's sad that Detomaso didn't change the horsepower output on their engine, might have been able to keep the company alive. It was really quick when the Pantera was brand new in 1972, in those times atleast.

Back then Manuals were the better options though, so I'm not 100% seeing how it was the transmission. Then again the RCF is held back by its transmission too.

In 1959, the De Tomaso company was founded with the idea of svelte Italian bodywork and reliable American motivation (mainly the Ford 351 cu. Windsor). The only other firm I know of to employ the same method is Iso with the Chevrolet 327 cu. and 427 cu. V8s Besides the Pantera, notable De Tomaso products include the Mangusta, Vallelunga, and the Longchamp.

Challenger SXT with Ripp Supercharger and options installed around $35k maybe? Looking back I can say that 80s cars can only be judged against other 80s cars. They were terrible compared to cars before or after. Even expensive supercars like the Pantera.

Seems like it got the 80's Miami cocaine treatment like the Countach, more vents, spoilers, slashes, more white, everything white, gotta match my Sonny Crockett white suit and white Gucci loafers.

Most know the Cleveland engines were introduced in 1970, long after the Windsor, the line was killed off many years earlier than the Windsor. What’s interesting is the Cleveland lived on for many more years in Australia, and that’s actually where these engines were sourced for the Pantera. An incredible series of engines

Still my most favorite exotic car of the 1980's! It looks like it is doing 100 mph sitting still! I see one once in a great while, usually early 1970's models. The GTS-5 is just a super rare beast.

In my opinion they're better looking than the Countach. Oh and speaking of Countach I bet that wing actually does something other than slow the car down. The chassis is really begging for a better engine though.
This is still a very cool car. I would give up my Camaro Z28 for one of these babies--just not in white. Definitely would hold out for the 425 hp version.
I did not know a company was importing these in the eighties! I have always loved the Pantera, especially the more aggressive looking later models. Does any body know if the Pantera ever got factory fuel injection?
Used to see these regularly at my local circuit in the 1980s in the UK. With the gt5s - this one anyway - the lines are awful with the newer rear spoiler. As for the body coloured wiper arms...... Original Campag wheels are absolutely gorgeous as is the front arch/sill line. Amazing concept brilliantly executed. Bullet proof Supercar!

Awesome! I prefer the look of the earlier GT-5 widebody, but nothing against the GT-5S. Pantera's are one of a kind. Still underrated by many auto enthusiasts to this day. True classic. I don't know how anyone could take a look at any other Italian supercar of the same era and call the tasteful Pantera "tacky"? And what did they have against analog gages? Motor enthusiasts, then and now, generally prefer the more workmanlike appearance of analog gauges. By 1987 a good many manufacturers had replaced the Atari like displays on even their higher end sport model cars and luxury sport coupes with analog because it is what buyers wanted.

It's always nice to know that there used to be a time when 5.5 was "blistering". Today's 0-60 wars are getting ridiculous. I saw one of these as a teenager at the local Sonic drive-in where all the cool kids used to hang out. Literally had 20 high school kids surrounding the car. It was very, very cool.

The Pantera is awesome, and for the late '80s, those numbers are awesome, too. My '11 CTS AWD Performance will do 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds. That's with a 3.6-liter V6 making 4 more horses and weighing well north of 4,000 lbs. All I'm saying is that we've come a long way, and I'd love both in my driveway.
Man, I hated that '80s styling fad where cars had everything...wipers, wheels, trim....color coded with the body paint color. Even Ferrari did it with the "Testarossa".
300hp was unheard of no one had a car with that kind of power, if you did it was a race car. This is a race car. A lot of cars today may have the power but they don't have the look or feel of an icon. The only alternative to a supercar like this is a corvette or a mustang.

Spoiler is nothing like the one on the Lamborghini, assuming you mean a Countach then you must be completely blind because the Countach spoiler is shaped like a boomerang this one is straight across. Did you see the bottom of the car flex up towards the roof when it took the turn and nearly flipped over, it definitely had one wheel cocked off the ground. These were such cool cars back in the day and still today but man I wouldn't want to get in a crash in one of them there would be nothing left

The Cleveland was barely working hard at 300hp. The Pantera could have been a lot faster with minimal massaging on the ol' Clevo.

My three ultimate favorite super cars..... The 1966 Ford GT-40 MK1, 2004 Ford GT and the 70's & 80's DeTomaso Pantera!

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the 351 Cleveland. They're a tough, reliable and potent engine... and NOTHING beats the sound of a Ford V8.

The really impressive thing is that Ford stopped building the 351 Cleveland in 1984, it was produced in Geelong, Australia.
Times have changed...0-60 in 5 is no longer considered fast fast. A Lincoln MKT cross-over with the Ecoboost engine does 0-60 in 5.5 sec.

Spoiler is nothing like the one on the Lamborghini, assuming you mean a Countach then you must be completely blind because the Countach spoiler is shaped like a boomerang this one is straight across. Did you see the bottom of the car flex up towards the roof when it took the turn and nearly flipped over, it definitely had one wheel cocked off the ground. These were such cool cars back in the day and still today but man I wouldn't want to get in a crash in one of them there would be nothing left
