1975 is the first year of the Volvo 240, with a manual 4-speed transmission and final use of Volvo's dead set reliable engine, the B20! The fuel injection system, however, is TBD. It was parked for a bad freeze plug in-or-around 2001-2003, and has been a one-family car since new.
With only 73,000 miles, this 245 has endured decades of sun and weather damage, but the paint and body held up pretty good! I haven't found a spot of rust on the car, which is great considering New Mexico has four seasons and lots of tree leaves... Let us see what it takes to get running and driving!

    David -
I love that you are the only youtuber who cares to pay for the real song. Just for that, you are super cool.
On a side note: Sarah was initially introduced as “a friend”. If I am reading this right, there might be something more going on. If this is correct, DEFINITELY KEEP THIS ONE. Smart, fun, willing to haul parts around. Perfect.
    Go, go, go.
EDIT: timing, plugs or wires? You have certainly been through the options and fixed it already. I have faith. You gotta have faith.

Ah, the good old 245DL! I had 2 of them, I love ‘em. Built like a tank with that massive bumper, soooo comfortable, nice high driving position for all round visibility, and (if well maintained) ultra reliable too. So stable, maybe the sheer weight helped! On standard rims it was also good in snow, maybe due to the weight concentration. I used to pull a horse trailer with mine, effortlessly. And on long runs, so relaxing. I’d be happy to drive one every day again right now if I found one in good shape.

Damn you're persistent. But just get the old waxy fuel out of or through the system and that old beauty will roll again. I must say that if that Volvo is an unusual model with rare fuel injection and other weird features then you, David, are best qualified to sort out the details and make it run.
Also it cleaned up surprisingly well after removing all the junk from the cabin. Looking forward to further rescue stages. Cheers

    Good job fixing that pump.👍
Some fresh and a bottle of injector cleaner will make it run even better. The injector cleaner will clean the pump, the fuel dizzy and injectors.
But may also dislodge old crud in the tank so prepare to change fuel filter multiple times. Also, maybe put all new fuel hoses in because the old ones are not ethanol resistent. Same for any seals inside the fuel dizzy. Replace those with green HVAC seals.

    Dear David Bello and Sarah.
👍👌👏 Uuuuh, at last it's wrenching time again! And WOW, even with two VOLVO enthusiasts/specialists. The engine sounds healthy and I hope that you will not have too much respectively more issues because of the old deteriorated gasoline. Unfortunately it's pretty cold for working on cars outside. Hope you two stay healthy. I'm eagerly looking forward to watch the next part about Fun Gus. I thought the vehicles name would be a bit like Ivys name because it's green too. Something like Ivyng or Irving I guessed. ;-) 😁
As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health to all of you.
Post Scriptum: Channel Budget Buildz rescued/repaired/showed a wonderful original and low mileage survivor 240 wagon (white/ivory) which will be sold in the near future. Love the work you are doing. I never owned a 240 but currently own an 850r its always a work in progress. I recommend that when you do get to put fresh gas in the car put in some Redline Fuel system cleaner. The cleaner will break down a ton of the varnish in the tank, lines. It will also help lube up that fuel pump and clean it even more. Plus it will remove carbon and varnish in the injectors, valves, and inside the cylinders. I would recommend filling it up halfway and adding a full bottle. For an old car like that, I would do it 2 or 3 times and you should notice a huge difference. Also, a good idea to install an inline filter if you can.

In terms of the gas tank in the car, the early 240s were part of a NHTSA recall which called for the replacement to a newer design. You might be able to check with your local Volvo dealer to see if that was ever done on your wagon during its history. My 1975 242DL has the newer style set up with the in-tank pump and would recommend having that if you are able.

I'm looking for a project 245, and of course prefer the older flathoods, but open to all wagons. If you know of any sitting in a driveway like this one....btw, I'm up in Washington (South Whidbey). I've got a restored 1996 850R estate with tons of upgrades, with the most recent being projector headlights & clear glass headlight lenses. Gosh this video reminds me so much of working on my 242 back when I was 17. There's something about the early ones I love they look better the crappier they are. The early colors are so much better along with them having single stage and they just faded instead of flaking. The chrome really ties it all together well. I want to make my 93 245 have chrome windows but I'm scared it might come out terrible

the b20F is the most rare engine for the volvo 240 even beating the turbo intercooler model. when you bought a volvo 245 new you could choose between a b21 without AC and all the other accesories, and most people chose the b21 for some more power so the b20F is really unusual on the 240. i can tell you there is only 1 car with that engine registerd in sweden because we did not even get the injection model we only had carburator or mechanical injetion. so the only cars with the b20F are car made for the US that did not make it over there

    • @idonotwantahandle2
      @idonotwantahandle2 13 днів тому

The earliest 240 cars were built for the UK market. I had one. It was registered 16th December 1974. The chassis number had lots of zeros and ended something like 600. It was a B21A 245DL. The gearknob was wider and flatter than later cars. The gear linkage frame was part of the gearbox and it had a very small throw to the point it was similar to 1990-on TVRs. The stalk switches had a triangular cross section. It was a cream colour with red cloth interior.
90mph or so top speed. It only did 24mpg (imperial). It did not change after changing the carburettor fuel metering needle. I think the wipers were also the wrong way round. I think it was some years later Volvo made RHD wiper linkages.
It was super reliable. The same 8" Bosch headlamps as the 164 were great and it whistled. People forget early 240s whistled until the A pillar seals were redesigned.
      Happy memories.

I love it! So glad to see it fire up after sitting so long. With that mechanical fuel injection it'll probably just get better as it runs fresh fuel through the system.
This restoration is just like my 1980 245 I got about 6 months ago. It has the B21 and has the K-jet fuel injection as well, and the same body style as you except I have the quad rounds. I thought you'd have the "D-jet" injection but it looks similar to K-jet, so Volvo might have swapped over earlier than I thought.

Great job, congratulations! I knew that 240s with b20s existed but I never actually have seen one. I’m surprised that the K-jet is still operating and is not gummed up. I’m far from an expert, but I’d recommend checking the delivery of each of the 4 injectors at a later stage. Some cylinders might be running too lean so you’d risk blowing the engine. I don’t know about the US but over in Europe gasoline contains ethanol nowadays, which is causing major issues with engines that haven’t run for a while, even 1 winter out of action can be enough to seize up a fuel pump. Carburetted but also fuel injected. Is Sara your g/f now btw?

It should have a locking tailgate strut on the driver side and a gas strut on the passenger side not 2 gas struts.
In Europe the 240 had a b21 engine also in the UK its b21 like my 245dl, some Italian models had the b20 engine for tax reasons, the b21 being 2127cc and above the 2 litre tax cutoff size.

Did you find out what the "solenoid" next to the valve cover was? The one that you reconnected the wire but there was still one missing? That might be in the cold start system. 6:55.

19.3 mpg - eeeek - why I'm driving Volvo's lovely D5 diesels. The 2005 XC70 with the Euro 3 163 hp D5 had a readout of 61.8 UK mpg after a 1,000+ mile round trip to Isle of Skye (that's about 51.5 US mpg). The other one - a 2008 XC70 with the Euro4 185 hp and Volvo's Polestar (about 205hp) reads UK 40.0 average ) that's about US 33.3 mpg... Of course, you're paying about half or less for what we pay for motion lotion over here so not so painful after all..:)

Is it the B20 that gives it that punchy engine note? Sounds meaner than my B230.
