Larnell Lewis gives me the confidence and determination I need to burn my drums and move on in life.
hahahahahahah man i laughed so hard reading your post j....sadly it´s true T.T
Yeah i should've picked up a guitar or smth
😂😂😂
Drums??? I burned my basses.
Same
My wife went to college with him...people were just as stunned by him then.
I bet the first time his parent's through on tunes to clean, whole house probably went slack jawed at once, as he plopped down in a diaper, and schooled a pro, on pots and pans, so hard they felt it reverberate back through the CD player... maybe cassette.
"I've never heard Larnell Lewis before..." ah perfect. I get to relive the first time I heard LL with you. 🤙🏾
My favourite part of this video was that Bryan wants to go listen to something where Larnell has had a ton of practice and played the song a million times, and there's a 95% chance he's going to end up listening to something from We Like It Here (probably Lingus), where he learned all the songs on the plane flight to Europe, and played them on a kit for the first time at the live recording.
9:15. . . "I can't. . . . "
YEP!. . . That just about sums up Larnell's drumming in *TWO WORDS!!* .
He knew what that line was gonna be because he recognized it as a quote of another famous solo
Spain by chick Corea. song is called Chicks Pain
Any other video: "Such a clickbait title"
Larnell Lewis video: "This is such an accurate title"
This is some Rain Man shit right here!
At 3:30 he literally DID know what that line was going to be because it was lifted from Chick Corea’s “Spain”. Larnell has likely heard that song dozens, if not hundreds, of times. The keyboardist “quoted” the line from Spain, which is why Larnell said “I hear that quote”.
I have played drums for soprano Measha Brueggergosman, great, challenging gig! I’m also an engineer in Toronto, so for an album I was doing with her, we got Jerry Granelli to play on most of the album, which was awesome. Larnel was invited to play drums in a couple of songs as well, he lives a couple of blocks from the studio, so he just used my Ludwig 1972 blue oyster and it was the best it’s ever sounded. On one of the songs he played some percussion. However on that song we had Jerry playing, who did not record with a click. There were a few sections that were pretty wavy time wise, he heard it once, and then recorded tambo, shaker and cajon exactly as Jerry had played them. It was pretty awesome to witness that happen first hand.
If you've never heard Lingus by Snarky Puppy by now you really should, I honestly think it is one of the best jazz odysseys of all time
Incidentally, the We Like It Here session is yet another example of Larnell Lewis learning/composing his parts on the fly and in a short time frame before playing it perfectly on camera.
@@JediMobius Larnell Lewis was not even the drummer that should be on that record.. He was flown in after the original drummer got difficulties with his visa to get to The Netherlands, where this was recorded.. He litterly was called 3 days before the recording sessions , and had 4 hours before the recording started.. He learned the parts while on the plane from Canada, where he lives... and he nailed it! The record We Like it Here became an Emmy winner.
I was in the audience during one of these recording sessions. They did 4 identical sessions and picked the best versions of the songs to put on the record/DVD... I have my 5 seconds of fame on the DVD LOL!.. Awesome experience to be there in that makeshift studio in an old building, that has been demolished by now (Kytopia Utrecht).. I was sitting right beside Larnell!
@@JediMobius just saw and heard Lingus today for the first time....blown away that he was not the original drummer for that session he killed it
Such a nasty, groovy song.
@@MarcoNierop I heard him say that, this man is insane. He is a drum machine
It's just like talking for him. He breaks it down into phrases and just adds accents. He's a badass
Bryan, LOVE the reaction at 10:40! HEY DRUMMERS (myself included).... Don't trash your drums or give up when you hear something like this. We may never play like Larnell, but we can let it inspire us to get just a little bit better :)
One of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen. Being able to play the head like that after only hearing it a few times is mind-blowing.
Good musicians make me want to work harder to get to that level.
Amazing musicians make me want to quit because I know I will never be as good.
On the list of greatest drummers, Larnell Lewis belongs at the top with the likes of Neil Peart, Danny Carey, Buddy Rich, et al. This is a guy who learned a whole setlist for a crazy talented jazz fusion band (Snarky Puppy) during a plane flight to the gig, then went in and just murdered it. An absolute legend.
I am so glad you found this -- Larnell is such a gifted drummer. Check out his work with Snarky Puppy "Lingus". I believe he had a short time to prepare for that one as well. Wish you and yours a happy Thanksgiving!
Apparently he prepared the whole album in the ~7 hour flight to the recording session
ua-cam.com/video/5p5sEewsYNM/v-deo.html documentary on that :)
He actually knew Lingus and Shofukan, he'd played those with the band before. But the rest of the tracks they recorded he learned on the 7 hour plane flight to the gig. Impressive to say the least.
If I recall correctly he learned most of the songs on a 7hr flight to go record the album
yeah, he was asked to play for that whole album like tomorrow
He knew that line because it's from a classic jazz song named Spain from Chick Corea, that quote is used literally everywhere
Also you should totally watch Larnell Lewis's performance at zildjian live it's awesome
This chart is called Chick's Pain so you kinda expect it to quote from Spain.
He did call it a quote, so that makes a ton of sense, thanks.
It's a play on words, Chick's Pain = Chick' sPain.
That was awesome. I bet if he knew his right sneaker was untied, he could have tied it during one of the solos without dropping the beat. Btw, anyone else here the Spain quote? Very cool.
LLLLLLLOLLLLLLLL!!! That was truly inspiring/intimidating. Dude is... Inhuman. Man. I felt myself reacting to you reacting to him! That was amazing. Great pick.
larnell’s how i imagine myself nodding along the first day of a new job. only difference is he flawlessly executes and improvises while i horribly burn myself on the fryer.
I like that you're a genuine guy. And honest. Those are GREAT things to keep as a musician !
That intro is so good it kills me
If you're looking for more, react to his Zildjan Live video. Tons of musicians to be just absolutely blown away by.
He's amazing... A Master Of Drums.
If you go check out We like it Here, a live album by Snarky Puppy, he got the call to record it, got on a plane the same day, flew seven hours, listening to nothing but the tracks (that were BEING written) with no drums, got to the studio, and had 2 hours of rehearsal before they hit record. The man is incredible.
Man, if you don't know Snarky Puppy, you gotta listen to them. Cuh-RAZY shit, man.
Yes, understandably speechless. Next level drumming. WOW! Larnell Lewis rabbit hole, here we come.
Dude is ABSOULTELY AMAZING...true prodigy!!
Sandman of him is awesome too. Regards from Germany. Thx for the content
Holy Shit !!!!!!! Thanks for sharing
Watched it again !🤣 tremendous !
He doesn't PLAY the drums, he's a JEDI DRUMMER!!
There's just something about watching someone else genuinely enjoy what you enjoyed - especially someone who knows a lot more about it. Great video.
3:24 indeed he knew what the line was because it's the theme from Spain from Chick Corea ;-)
You need to react to him covering “Enter Sandman”. Just uploaded last week
This comment !!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
Lol this was the 1st time I saw him ... thank you youtube this time in your recommendations!
i CAME TO MAKE THIS COMMENT! - But it was already made! :D So "I concur"
He did
as awesome as that was. Listening to that after this is quite anticlimactic.
Godly talented drummer.
"well Larnell......you made the band....actually I think you might be our best member...in fact there's no doubt...seriously dude you are phenomenal...please join our band? please????"
Checks notes, fixes glasses, dude could probably eat a sandwich during that awesome performance.
Good Lord! I don’t play drums but I do recognize a master at work.
I've watched this many times before your reaction. Your reaction is the exact same as mine. He is a beast isn't he lol. Like how in the hell... amazing
This makes me want to start taking up drumming lol seriously
Wow. This man can play. Gifted!
It's cool that he knew that bass solo was going to be a little lower in the mix so he chilled out with everything so it could shine through.
Makes you not want to play the drums anymore in the same time want to play more. Mind boggling
i love the 'Spain' section in the keyboard solo....
@bryanforcedrums thank you for such a pleasant and enjoyable reaction to watch!
On his planet they teach instant song writing in 1st grade. Watch what they teach 3rd graders from his planet in the Snarky Puppy "Outlier" video.
Your reaction is so cool. Love how enthusiastic you are.
you're a good guy bro. God bless.
When something makes you smile like that you know it’s a good thing.
I always said I was gifted on my drums and I am I also always say there’s always someone more gifted His mind is like a tape recorder
He has a good memory n grove..awesome.
That expression in his face at 10:41 .... yup..... yeeeaaaup...... yup! lolol
Il est extraordinaire
Musical genius in action
New sub ,non musician, thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to LL.Thankyou
There's a 2019 Quincy Jones gig where he's playing drums on Michael Jackson tracks. Good guy, met him at one of his gigs about 10 years ago.
Love your reaction 👍
i watched 2 videos of this dudes channel . this is awesome . knows when to talk enjoys what he watches
Love ur reaction dude!
His dynamics are masterful
Stunning. simply stunning.
One thing makes this Drummer one of the greatest, he listens. He is talented at a genius level but look what he did on the bass solo part, he restrain himself to give the bass some space and let the bass express itself. A lot of musiciens forget the first rule : listening !
at 3:20 he was able to recognize that lick because I am pretty sure the keyboardist took inspiration from Spain by Chic Corea
It was fun seeing your reaction to Lewis' machine-like memory, Bryan. If you want to hear a real break-neck drummer, have a listen to a dude named Matt Garstka from the "progressive metal" group Animals As Leaders. Garstka also has some jazz-fusion sessions here on UA-cam with pianist-extraordinaire Eldar Djangirov and bass-master Henrik Linder from the group Dirty Loops.
so that was my first and only take......... you got the job kid
THE PROFESSOR LARNELL LEWIS
Thank you, great video.🍻
10:38
- yup. Exactly.
This was awesome. Your reaction brought a lot to the performance. I think we all had the same reaction when he finally and was like "So..." 😂
He just put out a video where he hears Enter Sandman for the first time and plays it by ear. It’s a fun watch.
Next time you're hearing a new song, just try, predict the next line, tap your foot to what you think will happen, try a magic mushroom, literally everyone is capable of this..... at about 1/100th his proficiency😅, this dudes a living gift to our ears
BEAST
To be fair, if you studied jazz for a while, it's not impossible to guess what comes next accurately.
I know a lot of jazz drummers who studied another instrument like piano or guitar for that exact reason.
This is also why music school generally require you to play another instrument alongside your main instrument.
I noticed this too with myself.
I come from guitar first so I studied melody, chord progression etc.
While I wasn't technically the best drummer by like a long shot within my friendgroup, I was able to play to the other musicians on the spot much better.
This dude is like on like a universe beyond tho. Such a beast.
Great teacher too!
This guy is simply the best. I love drums and I wish I had learn how to play although I still love to hit anything.
the only logical response when asking Larnell how much he makes drumming is always and will forever be.. "not enough"
Master Drummer Respect man
With tears in my eyes I wish I was born in America you guys are the best musicisians in world.
Humbling isn't it? He's a machine!
*"Cyborgs aren't real."*
Larnell Lewis: "Allow me to introduce myself."
Great reacts. Larnell is dope.
I subscribed just to see your next reaction to a Larnell Lewis video !!
You should do a reaction to his "Enter the sandman" EPIC !!
The line he knew btw is from a song called 'Spain - Chick Corea
Larnell put out another video doing Enter Sandman. Definitely do a reaction to that one!
Looking up Larnell at his best for the first time? Mate, you're in for a treat.
Larnell is the most special and musical drummer we have in the whole world (with Vinnie)
"Come on, what a beast"
I showed my dad this video and he said "I can never tell, when a musician is watching another musician play, if he likes it or not". he was talking about how he thought you didn't like it based on your facial expressions but then you'd say something like "what a beast"
In the midst a a rabbit role, need to comment. THIS is beautiful, all of it.
What the! What kind of black magic sorcery was that? 👀 😳
10:44 I feel you man
yeah. Wow!!!
"also when I have to learn songs when I am away from the drums" Larnell I have absolutely no doubt you could write an entire albums worth of drum patterns in your head, arrange them, and play them in 1 take and it would be easily of a "final cut" standard
That's exactly what happened with his snarky puppy recordings. Learned the set on the flight over, landed, slept, and recorded the next day. ua-cam.com/video/EvxN7wCjSis/v-deo.html
listen to snarky puppy with the song lingus (we like it here) it's amazing
I got that same shirt Super Mario Shirt. They have them at Wal-Mart
Larnell Lewis just did another video where he listens to enter sandman for the first time and plays it back
Caught him live with Snarky in Denver. Holy shit.
So if this blew you away, go listen to Anarky Puppy - Lingus. He was called up 24 hrs before the show, never having played those tunes. Listened to a demo on a flight from Canada to Norway, did one jam session with the band then did that!!! The man is amazing!!
I would say he is the best on this planet
