This was really well done. Thank you for sharing and spreading the drumming love! :-)
Thank you so much!! I love your channel.
@@JunkdrummerTV Thank you for being a legend by not copy-striking it!
To the teacher, as a professional yourself, I respect your humility and admiration for Larnell's capabilities. One true sign of a professional is to be humble enough to admire the work of others.
This concept may be difficult for others to comprehend, but to compliment another doesn't dimish one's own ability. It shows, instead, that you are a true artist who loves and appreciates the craft to which you have dedicated your time, energy and hard work.
To do so takes vulnerability, strength and character, coupled with a strong sense of self.
That sir, is commendable.
#Respect
Thank you so much
New title for the video: "Dude dreams of being able to be like Larnell Lewis for 19 minutes"
That's an excellent title
That dude is me
🤘🏼⚡️💀
I think that goes for 90% of the people that play the drums and watch these vids. You can think you can play the drums untill you watch a vid like this Larnell Lewis one and get put back in your place.
"L.L. don't hurt'em"- Steve 2020
"The Force is strong" 13:18
This guy is such a team player, he plays respectfully when he's the only guy in the room.
Yes, Steve said that he was "getting out of the way", that's one way to put it, I personally thought "I love that the whole time he's not talking all the space, it would be so easy to do that… he's just giving space to other band members when it's important, and that's the sign of a great artist. He knows it's not about him." And it all refers to the same thing, respect for other parts.
Fun fact about the dude. He said in an interview he learned his part the the Snarky album “We like it here” on the ride to the studio! This dude is the real deal!
On a 7 hour flight to Europe with the exception of 2 songs.
That "I love drums!" at 15:06 was so cool.
My favourite thing watching reactions to great players by other players is that moment of "Ohhhh i love drums". I love seeing people enjoying their craft and enjoying other people being great at the craft like, it's just so much fun. Seeing people nerd out about their field, like damn that's what I live for. Whether it's linguists obsessing over languages, rabbis nerding out over obscure religious law rulings and commentary, or musicians getting their minds blown by other musicians, it's just the best damn thing in the world.
I heard him say "L.L. don't hurt em" and i was sold! 😂 this guys emotions was awesome. You got a new subscriber bud! Thank you!
Awesome! Thank you!
Man, the passion you exude just from watching someone play is addictive!
this was dammed entertaining to watch, and I'm not even a musician, just a music lover.
Thats why it's entertaining to you. Obviously Lewis is good, but any intermediate drummer is capable of doing this...
zephiro l I bet you are not even good at playing drums hahaha.
@@CC-tw6su I'd hope im at least decent, been playing for over 2 decades. This is basic intermediate level stuff. Once you learn enough theory it's not hard to predict what is most likely to come next. It's definitely not a beginner song, but it's also not something that is overly complex to the point of not being predictable.
Regardless my point is if you have been playing this isn't much different than watching a guitarist noodle over a backing track. It seems impressive to a laymen because there is a mystique of complexity to a person who is foreign to music and music theory.
@@zephirol4638 I am a musician for the last 35 years, I play 5 instruments with proficiency, and hack about on the drums. I am also a 20 year club dj. I will tell you this. There are at least 10 professional drummers and analysts, on UA-cam, with their entire lives dedicated to drum/music/writing/arraigning, all with actual careers, and they ALL say this is one of the greatest things one will ever see while also calling larnell one of the greatest of all time...
And you an anonymous troll hiding behind a faceless picture comes to say its intermediate.
You are just an asshole. A troll. A narcissistic sociopath. I appreciate your type as they always expose who they are. So sad they feel the need to denigrate the skills and abilities of strangers. Hope the serotonin boost was worth it troll. Exposed and shunned.
@@joshuarichard2509 obviously you're not if you honestly think that understanding music theory and having a musical ear equates to anything near " the geatest thing you will ever see" you can literally find 5 y/o's all over youtube doing this, and some at an even higher proficiency.
i'm not knocking the ability shown, just the ridiculous amount of hype for something anyone with a couple years under their belt SHOULD be able to do if they're taking their practice serious on any level.
Also you clearly have never heard of the term publicity leech. famous people will praise and talk about anything if it gives them attention. An you can find countless examples of such, so that argument is quite piss poor.
lastly that silly temper tantrum of a bitch fit doesn't validate your point and in fact shows your hypocrisy in the very same comment. Quit embarrassing yourself.
I just watched this on Drumeo yesterday . I already love Larnells playing, personality and love of the craft. But this was just staggeringly impressive and inspiring! I recommend that anyone who hasn’t seen it, go over and watch the full thing, once you’re through watching this to the end.
Great pick of drummer and clip and great job on reaction/analysis on this one Junkdrummer!
I watched it too, yesterday
Saw this on my recommended and as I was watching I just couldn't help but not write a comment saying that I absolutely love your personality! Not only was it entertaining, but your commentary was so insightful and a great play by play of what was going on with not only Larnel but with the song. Awesome!
Seriously impressive. I watched the Larnell Lewis Drumeo video yesterday and whilst I knew it was impressive, I didn't realise the sheer amount of talent and skill that Larnell unleashed (I'm not a drummer). Watching your reaction to it with the comments you added throughout really helped me to appreciate the video a hell of a lot more. Thanks for highlighting true talent to us untrained ears on UA-cam!
great comment! Thats what I felt but didn't have the words for. So, "what he said", basically ;-)
That part that you got caught off guard and had to go back, pretty sure he was just riffing off what he hears in the keys as the keys did the groove for a measure before he joined in. More of a jazz reaction than a memorization deal.
tempodan exactly!! This is the comment I was looking for
@@jasonnunes1682 same :P
Yes, but he also remembered that that keyboard part was going to keep going.
Yea, but he still had to remember, in that split second, where the solo was going and that it was going to repeat that riff.
@4:57 I think Larnell was making reference to the riff from Spain by Chick Corea.
100%
The title of the track is "Chick's Pain" which is a play on the song definitely being inspired by "Spain." Larnell references the title at the beginning of the full video and seems a little confused by it. Since he hadn't actually heard the track yet I don't think he got the reference. He seemed to have a little lightbulb moment when the keys player quoted it during their solo.
He didn’t know the lick lol
Never heard of Snarky Puppy but immediately thought Chick Corea.
Beat me to it lol
"The shortest pencil is LONGER than the longest memory" :) Great vid man.
Jeez, I recorded that bass line 8 years ago! time goes by 😂 Thanks for the « jacopastoriusing » quote Steve! ✌️
Yvan Ehtnioj That bass solo is awesome!
Love your enthusiasm and joy listening and watching him play. 👍🏾
“I love drums.”
Best line of the vid!
I love it when professional musicians recognize genius and are inspired by it instead of being shut down by it or worse: becoming bitter and critical. Excellent video!
First time i hear a "gringo" teach what samba is, pretty funny actually
Love the content 🇧🇷
And it’s a black guy playing it...so what
I think when you’re at this high of a level of musicianship, your vocabulary and “playbook” is so expansive that decision making is effortless. There’s just so little you could throw at a drummer at his level with his kind of flexibility musically.
This is the only reaction video I’ve ever actually enjoyed. And I loved it. Right there with you man, found this after watching Larnell’s video and losing my mind just like you. Unleash the hounds!
Dude. Your passion is contagious man. I haven't touched my instruments in years for various reasons but watching you reminds me why music is so amazing. Big ups!
I think you got to the heart of it. Creativity and resourcefulness comes not from what someone teaches you but from how you file all the little knowledge nuggets away in your brain and from applying them and critiquing the results. The best studio musicians have listened enough to be able to predict the future most of the time and then they only need to remember when they're wrong.
12:11 priceless. His reaction is yet more exciting due to the fact that he himself is a great drummer.
Your love for drumming is infectious
after loving the original Drumeo video, this was a great watch for me
Thank you!!
I watched this video the other day, amazing.
Man killed it, being able to produce this after one listen , mind blowing.
12:08 Junkdrummer "goooddd damn it" breakdown xD
Shit is fucking hilarious. I wish I had a drummer bounce like junkdrummer there. Fuck drum talent, I bet Larnell can't replicate junk's moves
Hahahahahahahahaaa the best reaction yet, the is force is strong.
“... this is what all that shits supposed to equal”
You got a sub outta me at about 12:30 when you reacted just like I would. "Wait hold up gotta stop did you even hear god DAMN i wish i was that good" lmao
Larnell is a beast of a drummer and a first class dude!
“this will be disheartening” my thoughts exactly haha
This is so fucking wholesome hahaha love this
"LL don't hurt em!!!"
Man your passion is contagious this vid along with the drumeo vid are both art🖤👍🏾💯
Now this is a reaction video!! Worth my follow!
Yes I've been waiting on Larnell Lewis yes awesome
I thought you were talking a bit too much over the video, but you are showing us how a very skilled artist with incredible judgement goes through the thought process, real time. Your humility shone through when you said to go watch the video vanilla. Good video man, keep it up. A bass player here :)
This was fun to watch... I am not musician but I feel your pain when hear something so good... hahah :D
Your comment to younger musicians about the power of UA-cam is spot on with regards to developing your craft. Lol I gladly spent hours going back and forth from my kit to vcr just trying to break down live sets 😂
*"Cyborgs aren't real."*
Larnell Lewis: *"Allow me to introduce myself."*
I'm not a drummer but I'm very impressed by this genius...I've also checked out what he composes & I dig it....And yes, Steve is right this is a very precious video...Thanks for commenting it...
“That’s Jedi shit” I’m taking that hahaha 😂...
"That's some Jedi shit...mmm..ah.. mannn, the force is strong!" haha you got me rolling in laughter. lol. Great review, I'm inspired and will be listening to more Larnell.
Really appreciate how he doesn’t ride the ride or hug the bell even though he’s playing a Latin type feel he’s not using any one bell too much or not quite enough just like Jaco P’s harmonics; which makes this even more powerful a performance as he’s literally evoking an influence through a musician’s playing inspired by another on a different instrument entirely. Yeesh
Also great video, glad you stay hyped about this good ass content, and with great articulation. Especially regarding a hard to teach or discuss idea.
"I love drums!" Haiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiil yes!
LOVED this video. God damn you're amazing to watch, your commentary is on-point. Guess what? I only had to listen to you once... then I murdered the Subscribe button. BOOM.
Thank you!!
Not a drums player or even a musician for that matter but this video was nothing short of amazing. This is the first video of yours that I have watched/come across and it is so apparent your passion and love for the drums! You love what you do so much that you would sacrifice your fame and views to someone else's video for the greater betterment of the drums and music itself. If I was learning drums I would find a way to make you my teacher no matter what. Truly love the video, really hope you see this even though its an 'old' video, and never stop drumming. #makedrumsmusicalagain
Thank you for your kind words
15:04 "Ahh I love drums!"
hell yeah baby
Larnell seems like a top guy as well as an amazing player.
The melodic thing from the keyboard solo Larnell picked up on while he was listening is a riff from the song, “Spain” and he recognized the quote… that, in itself is a bit of a trick because it is only a quote rhythmically, not tonally. What you referred to as the 2nd A melody of “Armando’s Pain” is kind of a poke at “Spain”.
Loved that quick reference "The Force is Strong" 😅
It’s amazing to see someone so passionate about their craft. Great video man your love for drumming gleams from your content :)
Larnell destroyed this. And you made a great commentary over it, I could feel the joy for drums. Awesome all-around
man I have watched several reaction videos and brother I love your passion and appreciation for this artist! really fun to watch you appreciate this!
This drummer is amazing
Fantastic!!
Thanks for letting me know about Snarky Puppy.
I think the greatest part was at 14:30 which is the 7th bar of the ride groove of the solo, lick into the 8th bar unison with the band. Insane.
Loves the “hahaha I love drums” really sums up how I feel about it too
Or you could not watch my videos. It's an option available to you.
Incredible 🔥🔥🔥
Bruh this song SCREAMS of Spain by Chick Corea
I love your “equals” statement. Everyone usually only sees the finished product, not the thousands of hours of repetition it takes to truly master a craft.
“AAaHhh I LOVE DRUMS”
That is the way it is done!!!
Larnell brought me here. I watched that video to about a week ago and I was in aww!! That Man is a monster🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I can't believe I've never heard of Larnell Lewis. This guy is a legitimate monster drummer. Both in chops and brain capacity. Damn. Incredible!
What you can’t teach is how you make the creation-love that line man! So true in most things we do
I am guitarist, I am not a drummer. But I did watch this original video yesterday and I got very happy when I saw that you reviewed it. Your chuckles of excitement crack me up! Also, how do I submit a video for you to watch? Thanks. Love your channel.
You really need to react to Snarky Puppy Lingus - Larnell came in as a replacement, learned most of the album on the plane over to the recording then proceeded to tear down the universe.
Lalah Hathaway. What she does in that song with her voice is roundly astounding.
Agreed
I like the passion you show
This video was really well done, and you definitely have a future using youtube as a platform!
Thank you
Learned a lot from u man and I don’t even play drums but just building drum patterns in midi this info can help
“That’s JEDI shit ...”. LOL
I've been showering for the past 6 hours and I'm still not as clean as Larnell Lewis
Comment of the day
6 year old me: “I wanna be a drummer.”
Mom: “NO. You’re going to standard college.”
6 year old me: “OK.”
Me NOW: “F*ck me.”
"Thats Jedi Shit" lmfao 12:49
I started watching your videos today and I'm hooked. very fun persona and actual insights instead of just watching videos and saying "woah". *subscribe*
This bloke lol “i know where he is going with this” 😂
Wow 🤩!!
The track you mentioned was Robert "sput" searight. With lalah Hathaway
So to your point about the rhodes solo hits on the syncopated section - its true that he may have remembered that part of the solo and made a mental note to catch that lick, but I feel this speaks more to his skill as a rhythm section player actively "talking" to the soloist. This is taught in a lot of jazz improvisation, call and response and the importance of the "conversation" that the musicians are having. Also - the part where he was singing the lick towards the end of the first listen - the lick is the theme from Spain by Chick Corea
To be more clear, I dont think that the syncopated hits were planned. More felt as he heard the chromatic lick coming on
I love your enthusiasm and sincere admiration towards the art man!
Yes!! Really glad you made this video, thank you Steve!
Thank you!!
Junkdrummer TV did you get a chance to check out Nate Smith as well?
Love all your videos! Great stuff, thanks!
Thanks man for sharing your enthusiasm and joy of what you do ;-)
Gotta react to him doing Enter Sandman now.
Watched this in the right order: came across him doing this because i am a Snarky Puppy fan and appreciated, but didn't understand it. You've filled in some of the explanations for me.
Good video and I'm so jealous of those Lysol products behind ya. Still hard to find
I think ‘Something’ drummer is Robert ‘Sput’Seawright... a friend of a friend 😇
Mild correction At 5 minute mark he’s actually singing along cuz it’s a familiar song “Spain by chic corea”
I felt that
I love your enthusiasm and joy. Nice!
Great video mate, you're a natural!! Really engaging, enjoyed it a lot
Dulcet Southern brogue. Lovely and impressive vocabulary.
The Dopeness! I'm not even a traditional Drummer I'm a Hip Hop head,. All my song making and music publishing experiences were done with Drum machines / Sampler sequencers.
