How to service a bronze winch on a Classic Sailboat ( a 1965 Alberg 30 in this case)

  • I decided to throw in a project video for all my subscribers that prefer these over the adventure videos, We will continue my Åland series next week but first....
    I made one of the videos a while back showing how to (incorrectly) service a bronze winch... and boy did I get roasted in the comments. Most everyone was nice and a number of viewers explained to me what I got wrong and acknowledged what I got right. Not wanting to spread misinformation I took the video down and finally got around to making a replacement video.
    On this video I show you how I disassemble the bronze winch on my 1965 Alberg 30. This model of winch is entirely bronze and single speed so it doesn't get much easier. There are no bearings on my winches just bronze on bronze action (that sounds like the title of a porno).
    I cleaned all the parts with diesel fuel and used "Harken Pawl Oil" on the Pawls and used "Harken Winch Grease" lightly on the shaft.
    Thanks to my viewers who were kind to me on the last video and explained how I should be doing it.
    Fair Winds,

    Thank you. This is enormously helpful to someone -- like me -- who owns a boat with the old Wilcox-Crittenden winches.

      I just changed out my Wilcox-Crittenden hand pump the other day. Not a name you hear much these days!

    Great lesson teacher! Soon I have to deliver some classic/vintage sailboats and I am sure this lesson will be very useful to me, so thank you. You made me nervous waving the winch parts around so close to the edge of the boat and I was so relieved when u had it all reassembled without loss! SkipRay, Kerry, Ireland.

    I have a 1974 MacGregor Venture 222 and it has this style winches on it. I have looked everywhere for a video on how to rebuild these winches. This is the first video I have found showing this style winch. Mine has what looks like needle bearings with a retainer ring groove cut in them.

    I think most of the naysayers would never have had the courage to reverse themselves on camera. I love your videos.

    This is great. Just bought a 1965 Pearson commander and she got 6 of these exact winches and I’ve been looking for a video about how to service them. Thanks!!

    Perfect! I guess the old adage “Less is more,” fits in this case. I also think sometimes simple is better than complex and those winches will be just as good in 50 years as they were new. Servicing them seems a snap. More frequent cleanings and the job will be exponentially easier the next time. I assume you’ll redo the mast winch the same way. Thanks for the redux and the advice.

      i agree Bruce, and yeah I went ahead and serviced them all so they should be good for a minute now, especially since we don't have any weather in Southern California.

    Awesome video. Thanks. Swapped my Catalina 22 for a cape dory 22(looking for an Alberg 30) and now have some sticky bronze winches that I know how to fix thanks to you.. When you pulled them apart and I saw the pawls i was like whoa! It’s the same principle as the rear wheel on a geared bicycle(ten speed, Mtn bike etc..,) when you are coasting/freewheeling you are hearing the pawls click just like on your winch. Keep the vids coming. You’ve helped me out a lot. And I also have my red neck mechanics card. I appreciate your time. I’ve learned some stuff.
    As for the haters, until they can come up with a video of them soloing a Diesel engine through a companionway hanging off the boom,they can, to put it politely. GO AWAY!

    Good video. Stuck winch was the first thing I had to fix on my boat, and I may have over-greased it with marine trailer bearing grease... worked though. Will prob do a better job next time I get to them.

    I will never understand haters on internett.... and the worst thing is, its men over 45y. (majority) at least in Norway.
    They did a research on it.
    Love your canal. Even if I have a new ish plastic (tupper were) boat.
    I wish my winch was that easy to clean.
    Cheers and fair winds.

    Hey neighbor, I have similar winches to yours albeit mine are smaller (4”) as I have a 25 foot boat although my winches have needle bearings, might be a bit newer. Excellent video and I am sure it will help someone.

    I just use fluid film on the pawls and wheel bearing grease on my shaft and it works well. Saves money on all the expensive lubricants and works just as well.

    Thanks for your service to this community. I think these are Merrimen Brothers Winches. I have the on my 1969 Bristol. I have one seized winch and the slot screw on top will not break free with the end of the winch handle and a wrench. I soaked in PB Blaster, no help. Any ideas before I resort to using a metal wheel to cut it off and replace?

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  4 роки тому

      apply heat, get a small hand held MAP gas torch, heat that thing up super hot and then use a chisel on the edge of the slot and a hammer and tap it or hit it hard from the furtherest out point you can get the chisel blade to try and break it,,, heat will likely do the trick, good luck.

    I didn't catch your first video and I have a 1966 sailboat with roughly the same winches.
    You said you way over greased the first one. Did you pull it back apart and wipe it down or just run it until next time?
    Great video by the way.

      I don't remember what all the guy said but he went off on a tangent calling me names and saying I was a pathetic loser and my marina was a dump and so on an so forth.... it got so bad that I had to block him... who know winch servicing could bring out such anger 😂

    Hey, man, thanks a ton for this. And double thanks for learning from comments and re-recording. I had the same problem - vintage winches and no idea what to do with them. A question for all - one of my winches no longer ratchets. Well, it does so intermittently. I’m thinking the springs may be worn out/broken. Or maybe just filthy. Any other possibilities? Breaking it down this weekend!

    • @SailorJames

    I’ve got similar winches on a ‘68 Morgan. Same style guts, same handle. Two questions. Who made them and should I polish the bronze?

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  5 років тому

      Mine are original from the Whitby factory so I am not sure who makes them, no makers marks on them that I have seen. I don't polish mine because I like how they look, but if you want your boat extra shiny you could polish them up :)

    A very good and helpful video, as I'm retired and looking for an older A30 as my first boat; --- and a lot of 'ancient/simpler' technology worked very well. I also remember on one of Drake Paragon's sailing videos that his professional 'rigger' at Sailcraft in Oriental, NC recommended that he spray brake cleaner rather than WD-40 because it doesn't leave the 'dust/dirt-collecting' film like WD-40 does. A question: would your bronze mast winch work more smoothly if it had a plastic sleeve, or perhaps it even had one that got discarded?

    • @SailorJames
      @SailorJames  6 років тому

      nice that you are looking for an A30! such great boats. My mast winches are just smaller and don't have or even have space for the plastic sleeves, they work great since I serviced them.
