I really dislike CVTs holding ratios like that; it's entirely marketing so the buyers who wouldn't buy manual transmissions can still feel like it's "normal". However, it's removing the one advantage CVTs have - the continuous variability.
I wish they'd just make them work like they're supposed to. If it's the only automatic being offered, people WILL get used to it. Too bad if they don't like it (I prefer manual transmissions; I've driven every kind except single clutch automated manual and currently have a CVT Corolla. I dislike the fake shifts, but stay light on the throttle, and it will just dully vary)
CVTs are popular in Japanese vehicles over DCT because of different road conditions. In Japan, we have tons of stop& go situation, so DCT's not so great initial acceleration isnt desired. On the other hand, CVT doed smoothe acceleration. It may not suit for Americans though.
Another reason they do it (fake gears) is to reduce drone. Try going up a steep incline with the throttle down to the point where the engine goes into the drone zone. Not pleasant if it stays in this zone.

Good and thorough review- there's a 2013 CR-V LX AWD sitting in the garage (my better half's daily driver) and this review is helpful for deciding on a possible replacement. Is the 1.5 Turbo oil dilution issue really an issue or has it been solved? We've had to deal with the cold weather VTC issue (oil bleed off from the solenoid) on our current 2.4L and can't say I was very impressed with the way Honda and especially the original selling dealer dealt with it. Keep up the great work- the breadth (econobox to supercar and everything inbetween) and depth (who else puts the vehicle on the lift and tells what's what) of your reviews is beyond impressive. The production values of the videos make them easy and a pleasure to watch.
The final twist of 2020 is going to be that Mr. Regular and Mr. Savage are long lost brothers. And their different but somehow slightly related video styles are going to combine into the greatest car review ever made.
Overall excellent choice. I bought one new few months back. Love it. You're right super economical, spacious, comfortable and over all best performer, with highest resale value. Thanks for the great video.
My mom was looking to get a SUV since she needs to carry a lot of things for work. Our options in the price range were the cx5, rav4, and the crv. We settled on the CRV for basically the main points you outlined. The easiest way I broke it down was, the CRV has the most space, most comfort. The CX5 is more sporty, less space, slightly more expensive with less standard features. The RAV4 is just outdated, less standard features, less space than the CRV, no android auto was a huge killer for day to day use, the only upside to going rav4 would be reliability and maintenance. We ended up going with the CRV because of its overall package and usability. There wasn't enough a reason in tradeoffs to go with the other 2 options over the CRV. It is extremely good as a comfortable daily driver. We got the 2018 ex-L trim which was $35k canadian and I truly believe it is worth that price. The only real issue we have with the car is the outdated infotainment. From the factory, it is just slow and laggy. We only use the android auto in it, so its kind of set and forget with everything else but it would have been great if honda put the new accord infotainment into this refreshed crv. It is the only downside of this car. If you want sportiness, go CX5. You want reliability, go RAV4. You want all rounder, go CRV.
I want to meet the people who that that wood was real. I just shopped one and it was a huge factor why I didn't go CR-V. Seriously no trim with leather avoids that cheap looking faux wood?!?! The other reason was the lack of candid answers on the oil/fuel leak problem. Sounds like they still dont have it figured out :( Otherwise it was a a strong contender for me.
My old Crv 2006 just runs! 240 000km One problem! The AC this summer. A superpractical workhorse, for tools, timber, ☺️, kids babies...Today I want the RDX now, something somewhat fun to drive. But its not for sale in Sweden ☹️
Hopefully before anybody gets mad at my deconstructive comment here, I should point out that the CRV is absolutely all four things SavageGeese said. He's on point.
The only negatives IMO for this car are: 1) The shifter, it should be a gated one, with D at the bottom, not one step before. 2) The infotainment system, it should have more physical buttons, and 3) The CVT, they should offer as an option the 9 speed conventional auto, that is offered in some other countries, for those who hate CVTs, like me.
My girlfriend has a 2017 CR-V and she could not be happier. It’s a touring trim spec and only option it didn’t come with is the LED Headlights. I’ve driven it numerous times over the last year and feel that it’s a solid vehicle. The CVT is worlds better than Nissan’s CVT and I don’t really mind it too much.
So tell me what I buy, Rav has fuel tank issues and package problems, crv is lemon, cx 5 less cargo not fuel efficient, nisaan cvt breaks down, so all in all I don't buy anything because everything is shit.
Other than the CVT I like this new vehicle. I am fan of that little turbo inline 4 as well. I feel they are better engines than the old N/A engines. I know not everyone is a fan of the new engines and that’s okay. Honda had to make changes for fuel efficiency.
@@Fadic4 nope and their turbo engines are pretty much bulletproof as well, but turbo engines are inherently flawed in that they need to run a very rich air/fuel ratio. And that causes carbon deposits inside the engine which in the long term, could mean you lose some power/fuel consumption and in the worst case even kill the engine.
Surface rust. Companies trying to save a buck try to strike a balance between low cost and durability and they end up with steel that looks like garbage after a year but will still function as intended for a relatively long time.
D R if it was Turbowski’s response would’ve been more like “because manufacturers are cheap as fuck and they don’t give a damn about you and if it rusts after they get your money then oh well”
I'm leasing a 2017 Honda CR-V Touring Canadian version and it has all the bells and whistles like panoramic sunroof, heated leather wrapped stirring wheel, 3 stage heated back seats but the only thing I wish it had was the fuel efficiency part of the RAV4. Once my lease is up I'll be taking a look at the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or the RAV4 Prime
You hardly touched base on the oil dilution issue. Huge problem. What did Honda do to fix the issue in the next model years? Also what is the downsize of a turbo rather than a naturally aspirated engine???? There have been many who have said this engine will not last as long as Honda's other naturally aspirated engines of the past. Also, the shifting sounds heard in the cabin, were these artificial sounds put in the cabin by Honda so it sounds like a standard transmission? Also some buyers are using the CRV to haul small RVs. Pros or negatives on hauling with a CVT transmission ? I still own a 2009 3rd generation CRV which I bought new and have had so little problems with it that I continue to drive it. I would not buy this new generation with the Turbo. Makes the engine do double the workload in small displacement and thus will wear out the engine prematurely. Also the oil dilution issue is a problem and I have yet to hear from Honda what they have done to rectify it. Software is not it. It was a manufacturing defect with the cylinder displacement. Honda has not come clean.

Man i love your reviews. You are so impartial and really categorize a car based on its intended market focus. I have a 2019 Rav4, love it, but always like to see its competition. So glad I am a subscriber.
Mr. Goose is an American hero.
thought he is Canadian haha
They should've added the 2.0T with 10 speed as an option for a Sport model
Good point and Toyota should offer the 300 hp V6 in their top RAV4s as well.
@@rightlanehog3151 I'm actually looking for the older rav4 with the v6
@@SSDracerSD I do a lot of 'window shopping' for V6 RAV4s. The good news is that they are no more expensive in the used market than ordinary 4 cylinder models of the same year and trim level. Use a little patience and you will find lots of low-mileage examples with 40,000 - 65,000 miles at very reasonable prices. Happy hunting.
@N0RT2G0RD4U I did. 2020 Accord 2.0T sport.
Right Lane Hog The Prime is the new “V6”, gets better mileage but $$$
actually really impressed with the simplicity of this car. looks like a perfect daily for a small family in the pnw
Indeed! That's exactly what it's designed for. The AWD if you live somewhere with colder weather.
The rear end looks like a BMW X4
I enjoy your reviews so much. As a car enthusiast this was my identicle impression when deciding on a car for my wife. I too started making sarcastic remarks when the sales rep told me to ”punch it”, he didn’t appreciate my comments.
I cannot wait to see your review of the Hyundai Kona Night Edition. Just for you they swapped out so much of that boring matte finish plastic and replaced it with acres of delicious piano black trim!
Major props for having the stones to call out the oil dilution concern vs everyone else too scared to intimidate the fan boys. “Guaranteed the engine update in 2019 fixed that” yet it still pops up. Unfortunately I still think the rav4 is a better long term choice. Solid review
I love that Mark couldn’t even keep a straight face in that opener.
I hated every minute with my new 2017 crv. I had it for two years of nothing but trouble with oil dilution and electrical problems...the gear shift even broke off! I now have a 2020 mazda cx 5 and it is perfection.
How is the Cx-5 working out for you?
Some of us family vehicle owners will do our own maintenance. Please consider discussing maintenance accessibility such as air filter, oil, etc. Some mfrs are trending towards making these more difficult i.e. Tacoma oil filter.
Easy, same as Civic, belly pan drops with a screw driver and about 15 seconds to get access to filter and drain plug.
I can always count on you for an honest assessment of a vehicle. Thank you.
After my last Honda ownership ordeal, never again. Its not so much the cars, but the dealers are so up their own asses. I had to go to 3 different dealers to get a TSB fixed because it shook at stoplights. Glad it held its value so I when I dumped it, I barely lost any money
so your telling me lehigh valley honda couldn’t solve your problem?
@@blazerboiz5996 not near me. I delt with piazza mainly, which was horrendous.
@@NeoHCgbz happens, much happier with my Toyota and Mazda anyways
In SoCal, you more or less have to suck off a salesman to buy a Honda.
Absolutely perfect video as always!
Look how much corrosion is already under the car and it is BRAND NEW!
No, the issue hasn't been fixed. There was a class action lawsuit because of it. Look at getting a Mazda or Toyota.
who dislikes ur videos ???? I don’t even want a CRV but ur review style is incredible I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. 10/10 Mr. Geese
Best 0-60 in a UA-cam car show ever. 2020 Award.
He said “rahv 4” lol! This channel…I love it.
I wonder how he's going to make this interesting.
Enter, Pre-Postal scream...
Damn near ended up with coffee all over my desk. Love it...
Thank you.
I love the unpredictable humor! That roar when accelerating-hilarious!
Having a Honda Civic and Ridgeline, I pick the Mazda CX5.
Finally, you took my advice and switched to decaf. Now Honda is here to soothe your need for speed. Thank you, CR-V.
🤣 “girlfriend, soon to be wife, soon to be ex-wife” “I’m 5’-13”” 😂
Your reviews keep getting better. So much personality in each one
“The CRV is quiet, calm, relaxed, boring.” Not so Mark. Lol
The mid size cuv is the definition of boring
One exception, Macan S!
my wife drives it since 2017. 37K miles. So far so good. It's very roomy and comfortable for the long trips
Dip stick check...fuel diluting the oil?
My old Crv 2006 just runs! 240 000km One problem! The AC this summer.
A superpractical workhorse, for tools, timber, ☺️, kids babies...Today I want the RDX now, something somewhat fun to drive. But its not for sale in Sweden ☹️
"The CR-V is about one thing"
*Lists four things*
It’s four individual 1 things
Hopefully before anybody gets mad at my deconstructive comment here, I should point out that the CRV is absolutely all four things SavageGeese said. He's on point.
Best Car reviewer in the game hands down! The 5’13” killed me too 😂
The random humor is necessary and gold in your videos lol
4:25 surprised me but 7:11 was out of this world. Savagegeese never disappoints
The CR-V is the hallmark of A-to-B driving in an SUV-like moving blob.
Staple of the Suburbs
It is what made Toyota beef up the styling of the Rav4
@@Kizzle001 More likely knowing they had the Venza coming up for people who valued a car-like experience.
Bro, I can't get enough of this channel! When I saw Marc Rebillet 'Loop Daddy'... Are you hiring?? Miami is just few hours away...
When is he going to be a host on Top Gear? Solid 69/10 review.
7:10 can't stop laughing at this! ahahha
The man took it to the next level!!!
Really appreciate you showing the bottom of the vehicle - something I have not seen in other reviews.
Sport mode is amazing, wow!
Then its not Touring. Touring is the one trim to have the LED headlights.
I'm 4' 19"
I'm 3' 96"
Another inch and you would’ve been cool.
Wow you're a big boy! How many months are you now?
I have the 2008 version and am impressed with all the little considerate things Honda gives the driver including wide opening doors.
According to Scotty Kilmer UA-cam Channel the newer 2017 - 2020 Honda Cr-v are Lemons.
So tell me what I buy, Rav has fuel tank issues and package problems, crv is lemon, cx 5 less cargo not fuel efficient, nisaan cvt breaks down, so all in all I don't buy anything because everything is shit.
@savagegeese can you elaborate on the oil dilution issue? I’m on the fence of getting a civic sport. Love the channel, keep it up my dude!
Appreciating the extra savagery lately.
Other than the CVT I like this new vehicle. I am fan of that little turbo inline 4 as well. I feel they are better engines than the old N/A engines. I know not everyone is a fan of the new engines and that’s okay. Honda had to make changes for fuel efficiency.
Wow, I know it's the underbody, but that's a lot of rust.
Honestly great review bro, keep up the good format
1.5L turbo and CVT, yes, this thing is going to be oh so reliable in the years to come.
Hondas aren't what they used to be
Has Honda had issues with their CVTs...?
Had a 2017 accord sport with cvt... Zero issues
Wow! Wake up! Save up for the 7000$ replacement CVT.
I love it when you drink before a review!!
I’m stuck if to buy the CR-V or RAV4
Does this generation of the CR-V burns engine oil ? My grandma owns a 2017 crV Turbocharged 1.5l
5:15, how does a car that new have so much rust underneath already?
Surface rust. Companies trying to save a buck try to strike a balance between low cost and durability and they end up with steel that looks like garbage after a year but will still function as intended for a relatively long time.
@D R If that was Turbowski, the response would have contained far more sarcasm.
Welcome to the rust belt
D R if it was Turbowski’s response would’ve been more like “because manufacturers are cheap as fuck and they don’t give a damn about you and if it rusts after they get your money then oh well”
That thing has more rust than my 97 Silverado...
That launch was BRUTAL
How is the AWD? Does it actually work or is it like the 3(?) prior generations where the rear wheels do nothing?
I'm leasing a 2017 Honda CR-V Touring Canadian version and it has all the bells and whistles like panoramic sunroof, heated leather wrapped stirring wheel, 3 stage heated back seats but the only thing I wish it had was the fuel efficiency part of the RAV4. Once my lease is up I'll be taking a look at the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or the RAV4 Prime
7:10 simulated sound of VTEC kicking in.
OMG, I only watched to see how this thing accelerates and that scream was priceless!
It's only a big issue if you live in extremely cold climates. In most places were its not winter more than 50% of the year its fine.
Spencer Deal no owners experienced the dilution issues in various climates. It’s not just cold
7:11 shit like this is EXACTLY why this is one of my favorite car review channels 😂
That Honda L15 Turbo is by far my favorite engine for a 4 cylinder that's below 2 liters.
Isn't that the worst engine honda made? It had oil dilution issues and there's no VTEC
@@ryadhasanahmed5443 Honda has made updates and had recalls on the Honda's equipped with the 1.5l. The Civic, Accord, CR-V has the 1.5t the Accord and CR-V has VTEC and the Civic SI as well but it isn't that noticeable since it's turbocharged. And the 1.5l as the engine itself has been on sale for years especially from the earlier years from the Honda Fit.
WORST ENGINE EVER
