    So an "internal pro sound mod" is just a fancy name for an amplifier bypass.
    Fixing or replacing the amplifier is a better solution IMO as you can run it on speakers without an internal amp. Hiss and noise is usually due to bad caps or poor shielding/grounding or in worst case all of them but is not usually a hard thing to fix with some basic electronics know-how. It a battle a lot of cheap electronic guitars often have to fight and most of the fixes carry over such as constructing a Faraday cage shield to keep EM interference out from sensitive audio parts.

    • @JoeBleeps
      @JoeBleeps  26 днів тому

      Yes, absolutely a fancy name for an amplifier bypass. I didn't coin the phrase but in the chiptune community it was dubbed "pro sound" and it can cause confusion which is why I wanted to demystify it here. Being able to just take the sound signal and run it through a mixer without any interference definitely gives a much cleaner audio signal to record or perform with. There are other amplifier modifications available for Game Boy consoles but these generally focus on making the speaker louder.

    • @Neruomir
      @Neruomir 26 днів тому +1

      @@JoeBleeps I understand, when gaming is not the primary concern just bypassing and amp the signal in a cleaner amplifier externally is a simple and effective solution but it hurts my soul to see it gimped and hobbled as a console and sorry if i came off as "a know it all" it was not my intent i wrote it quite late. :)
      I'm gonna tinker around tho and see if i can't figure out what the primary culprit is for the noise. Tho i suspect having the amp chip next to DC input and the audio connector smack-dab right next to and its caps hanging right above the unshielded power regulator board was prob not the best idea the designers had. If nothing else i guess one can do the amp bypass for the 3.5mil and get one of those fancy clean amp replacement mods that only sends to the speaker as those also bypasses the noisy native amp thus you can get the best of both worlds in theory.

    • @JoeBleeps
      @JoeBleeps  26 днів тому

      @@Neruomir the clean amp type products aren't always great, depending on the brand you're buying. There is always the option of a switched approach to either bypass or engage the amp but you'll still be getting that hiss. With the amp bypassed it is actually still pretty usable with headphones. Not as loud, sure but still more audible than I would have expected and without that hiss.

    Hi, I've got a question about doing a, "internal" sound mod: do you know of any ways to amp up the audio-jack as well as the speaker, bypassing the original DMG amp? From what I can find, you can do an "internal"-mod wher you add an amp board (eg. retrosix have those), but those are just for amping up the speaker. However, I'd like to amp up both the speaker & the jack, while making sure you the jack cuts off the sound to the speaker when plugged in.

      I'd point you in the direction of www.heldergametech.com/ who posts as angryhelder on Instagram and Twitter. They did a lot of the work that R6 copied and make reliable products with a great reputation. They are also very helpful and will most likely be able to answer your questions. I use an external mixer to boost the sound but I can see how an internal amplifier would be useful.

      @@JoeBleeps That'd be awesome! The thing I'm most curious about is how you ended up mounting the side switch to change which signal gets used. I ordered parts to set one up similarly, but I'm just a tad bit hesitant to relying on hot glue for a long-term solution haha. The other thing was which DPDT switch you ended up using, as I've found a few but I'm not too sure on how easily they'd be able to be used once installed.

    I am wondering if you could implement a switch to change between the internal pro sound, and using the headphone jack as it comes stock. That would be an interesting middle ground for those who still like to make music through headphones, as well as play live.

    • @JoeBleeps
      @JoeBleeps  2 роки тому

      It's doable for sure, essentially you'd have two wires to disconnect/ reconnect at a time. Would work better if you soldered to the points where you removed the two wires instead. I've found that to be not quite as good for the prosound but it does work, and would be better suited to the switch. I personally have no problems with using headphones after the prosound mod. Quieter, yes, but much cleaner sound.

    Hey there, great video! I found a DMG mod kit called "PureSound + BassBoost" by "Revive to Relive" and it consists of 3 electrolytic capacitors ("replace the old two capacitors with the new ones and solder an additional capacitor to the DC CONV"). This seems to be a much simpler mod - any thoughts on this?

    • @JoeBleeps
      @JoeBleeps  Рік тому

      That sounds interesting, the capacitors will serve to emphasise the bass. The mod I'm doing here is mainly to provide a clearer sound and then I use a mixer to adjust levels such as bass. It's fun to try different mods though!

    Would love to have some video about the variable clock mod (thursday customs used to have them, and some month ago I get some from handheld legend). I.e. could we build our own, how to we fit the existing ones into a IPS and pro sound modded DMG shell. Also sometimes pushing the buttons on these things will crash your processor and I read somewhere that this could be circumvented by using a rocker switch instead of a button.

    Hey Joe! Great video, I had no idea that the internal pro sound option existed! I have just two questions
    1. You said that the internal pro sound mod makes the sound quieter, does it still get loud enough for personal headphone use outside of recording?
    2. Where's the best place to get those little wires to solder the connections?

    • @ConnorBaxter
      @ConnorBaxter 2 роки тому

      It gets quieter with headphones due to the signal not being amplified as much for the headphones to drive them. it's still audible and useable in quiet settings. but it lacks some of the oomph, bass, and volume for me generally if i'm on a train etc. through an amplifier or mixer, it sounds so much better though!! I think the easiest compromise is having a seperate jack for Prosound, and keep the headphone jack for when you're writing on the go with headphones. just my experience.

    • @JoeBleeps
      @JoeBleeps  3 роки тому

      It was a really small one, any should do. I often use ebay for stuff like that. This one had two rows of three pins so it's like an on/on Switch to swap between states. Having two rows meant I could swap between pre and post for two inputs at the same time, if that makes sense. It's not a mod I've seen done before and it's far from essential but it was fun to do!

      No additional components needed. The hiss is generated by the headphone amp, if you wire up your connectors straight to the audio out points on the motherboard like this you'll get a much clearer signal, regardless of what connectors you choose to install. I hope that helps.

      @@x2bounty not too hard but I'd suggest learning to solder wires to components first. With RCA the drilling and installation of the sockets is the tricky part

      Yes, there are a few mods for game boy Color but I've never found the GBC sound to be as satisfying as the DMG, so I've not explored them fully

    Why don't you just remove the original headphone jack and put the new one there instead of drilling a new hole to the shell?

      The internal prosound is pretty much that. I can't see much benefit to swapping the parts out though.
