    I am from Friesland! You are right: Friesians are proud to be Friesian. We're honest and hard working no-nonsense people. Although the rest of The Netherlands thinks we're retarded, we know we aren't. 😉

    The polevaulting or "fierljeppen" originates from farmers walking over their land jumping over the water. They had to, otherwise they had to take the long walk 😁

    • @vydrakkzorxe
      @vydrakkzorxe 3 роки тому +2

      Not to mention that laying down planks would unstable and a safety hazard, and small rope bridges everywhere time consuming and expensive to build & maintain!
      Making dirt dams to walk on inbetween also isn't feasible because the water channel needs to be uninterrupted
      So therefore polevaulting was the most efficient way :)

    • @StefanVeenstra
      @StefanVeenstra Рік тому

      @@vydrakkzorxe Yup, many people forget all the waterways, from ditches to canals, had logistical use too. It was usually faster and easier to move cargo by water than by land. Farmers still needed to go from one field to the other and vaulting reduces delay. Rafts were also an option, but they take more space than a simple pole.

    The polevaulting is the best way to get across numerous ditches in the fields.
    Bridges are miles apart,so the polevaulting is a nice shortcut. Now also a sport..

    5:54 Look at it from a different angle... why would you pole-vault over dry land? You could just walk. It'd be easier and quicker. When you do it to get over a river, at least there's some chance that you'll get to the other side with dry clothes as opposed to wading through....
