it is fascinating how we always manage to use our biggest enemy that is called "water" in our advantage. Together with pragmatism ofcourse: we do not even have to promote ourselves, we just know how to solve water related problems. I grew up 5 meters below sea level but in Flevoland the dykes were 13 meters high, so let the storms come, I will still sleep as a baby! Always fun to see how others countries seem to be amazed. Be it for our old painters, be it for our creative monopoly in slave trading or our waterworks, I realise what I take for granted is being seen as extrodinairy to the rest of the world
The only thing for which the Dutch are truely special is our cooperative attitude to get done what needs to be done. And to find compromise that delivers results while more or less pleasing everyone. Here in the Netherlands I've been told a rumour about the palmtree islands negotiations. Basically, they went like this: A: We want a palmtree island right there. B: That can be done, but it will be expensive. A: Not a problem. B: We'll probably need permits and the like. A: Done B: When do you want this done? A: Soon . . . Now . . . . Yesterday. B: we're on our way.
They also advised against it because it wouldn't be stable. But when money is on the line a lot can happen, despite the issues. The islands are sinking as predicted.

My brother worked for that company that does drinking water for the olympics for a while. At the time they were doing Rio they didn't even have an international helpdesk. It was essentially a bunch of farmers who were really good at pipes and drains. My brother was brought in as an intern and had to translate everything into english because these dudes didn't speak enough of it to work with event organisers.
The dutch also help with drinkingwater. Basically anything water related....managing water, too much water...not enough water...bad quality water....removing water....is something stuck in the water. 😂😂
I'm Dutch and living in Egypt, the cargo ship stuck in the Suez Canal was of course all over the news here and on social media and I was feeling proud that because of the Dutch expertise they managed to solve the problem. I also recognize the other subjects mentioned in the video, it's great to see how they finally start to use areas of this big part of empty land which they have and some parts of the desert in Egypt are now turning green thanks to the help of the Dutch experts 😁💪
Emptying aquifers to irrigate land is not sustainable though. They have a lot of sun in Egypt. Let them build greenhouses. Same amount of agricultural output with 10x less water wasted, on 10x less land. And theyve been making glass there for literal millenia.

What most people don't realize about the dutch is that we started the war with pseidon a little over a 1000 years ago. That's alot of experience when it comes to water controle. It's also been said that the fight against water claimed more lives then any other war ever fought. I had the privilege to work on a project near Rotterdam called maasvlakte 2. I worked heavy duty digging equipment, from 2010 til 2014. That part of the netherland is brutally pushed against by the north sea. I've seen waves claiming concrete block with a metric weight of 40 to 60 tons like it was a paper box. I'm that moment I realized that a combination of water and wind is brutal destructive.
Well the fight started when we got here, a long time before. The first polders were made between 800 and 1300 AD, no one is actually sure. But definitely more than a 1000 years of water management.

I wonder how the hanze handled sailing brutal waters and rivers in a time, they didn't know as much as we do now. I'm sorry, I'm getting exited to dive in this type of history. But leave a gap on the middle of the stream. Then watch the water level rise, and next day, people on canoes would go down the rapid streams we created. As 5-12 year old kids we were already doing water management. I think it's just in our blood haha

Besides salt water resistant potatoes, we now also have projects growing seagrass and seaweed off the coast, and experiments with many types of nutritious plants that naturally grow in very salty soil that are edible for humans, which actually desalinate the soil naturally, such as glasswort (zeekraal). These projects are followed with some interest from other countries dealing with rising sea levels, among which the USA, China and Japan. Very cool!

The thing that I find interesting is that a lot of things are very standard to us, as in, most people here know about it. We're taught about things like floodplains from a relatively young age and most people know how polders work/are made. It's like living in a rainforest and knowing things that are specific to the area. It's not advanced knowledge and it's almost a waste that it has to be explicitly shared instead of people being easily able to get all the knowledge themselves. It's a bit sad that people have to ask for help in cases they could easily solve themselves if they had access to the knowledge necessary
