    At present, I find myself deeply immersed in the process of preparing for an exam that places a significant emphasis on Critical Reasoning (CR). Despite my persistent efforts, I've encountered considerable challenges in fully understanding the intricacies of this subject. I've invested hours watching various instructional videos in the hope of gaining clarity, yet it often feels like I'm navigating a maze with no exit.
    However, amidst this journey of uncertainty, I recently stumbled upon your tutorial that felt like a beacon of light in the darkness. It provided me with a newfound clarity and understanding of the subject matter, almost like a dream come true. I'm immensely grateful for this tutorial and the knowledge it has bestowed upon me.
    I genuinely want to extend my heartfelt thanks to you for sharing this invaluable resource. Your generosity in making this tutorial available is truly commendable. May you be showered with blessings and good fortune for your selfless assistance.

    In question 1 - Option D makes a lot of sense to me too. Another possible reason to say one of the planes are closer than 3 minutes apart?

    • @MagooshGMAT
      @MagooshGMAT  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Jashan! So the prompt says "The device alerts the DC-10, via a red light, when another plane is slightly more than 3 minutes away from a potential collision." So the light comes on at more than 3 minutes away, no matter what. Slightly more than 3 minutes means there's some variance as well for red lights to come on at different times. If the light came on at less than 3 minutes, that would be a malfunction. We can't contradict the information in the passage that the lights come on at over 3 minutes.

    Erika,
    Thank you for the videos!
    But Quick questions (anybody can answer):
    1. In the second question (Highway), Why the answer cant be 'E' because if highway speeding tickets are cut, they will be still obeying the speeding rules which supports the arguement?
    2. In the last question (Assumption), why the answer cant be 'D', if you negate D implies that since there are other areas where company does waste its money, then currently they are not doing the 'most' to save money, and hence they might be able to do the most by focusing on other areas not the current area, this destroys the conclusion?
    Thank you in advance for clarifications.

      hi, hope im not too late!
      for the second question, the psychologists specifically say that the reason drivers slow down is because of signs of civilization. so if the reason that drivers are slowing down is because of police officers, then it doesnt support the hypothesis, because it means the drivers arent doing it out of care for people and only coz they dont wanna be fined.
      for the third question, notice that the conclusion specifically states "DUE TO inneficient corporate structure". so the conclusion is saying that the managefix's plan is the MOST they can do to fix overspending ONLY DUE TO corporate structure. theyre not saying there arent other areas where they overspend, this is just the area they currently focused on. therefore, those other areas are irrelevant to the question

    For these questions, is the correct answer often the only logically correct prompt of all choices?
    Or could there be multiple options that is logical but you must pick the “most” correct answer.
    E.g., for question 2, the third option about traffic being more congested around towns and cities (assuming compared to rural areas) could be an implication of the psychologists argument and would support their theory. However, the second and the correct statement more directly addresses the argument. With that said, large plowed and cultivated fields doesn’t guarantee that there are houses or buildings which was the premise of the argument. I was confused which of the two to pick.
    I’m guessing I’m making too many logical jumps, and part of gmat practice is familiarizing w the gmat way of logic

    • @MagooshGMAT
      @MagooshGMAT  Рік тому

      Great question! Yes, for CR questions you'll always want to choose the MOST correct answer overall, even if other options 'could' possibly work. Note that question 2 here asks "which of the following...MOST STRONGLY supports..."
      And you're correct, you don't want to make too many large logical leaps--your answer should always be supported by what IS in the passage/argument.

    What about the previous one that corporate structure is the only area where cost cutting is area whereas other areas are all ok.

    • @MagooshGMAT
      @MagooshGMAT  Рік тому +1

      Hey Zahid! The argument limits the scope to corporate structure:
      It "will be doing the most that can be done to cut unnecessary costs due to inefficient corporate structure." So, assumptions about other areas aren't relevant here, so that rules out choice D.
      If the argument didn't say " due to inefficient corporate structure" then (D) would make sense. Hope that helps! :-)

    Great video, but I think I'm missing something. These are reading comprehension questions, not critical reasoning.
    What am I missing?

    • @MagooshGMAT
      @MagooshGMAT  3 роки тому

      Hi Harry! These are indeed critical reasoning questions, based on a short passage and asking you to evaluate the argument in some way. They do look very similar to reading comprehension in some ways though!

    • @vubar_gmat
      @vubar_gmat 3 роки тому

      @@MagooshGMAT I see. Maybe I had an oversimplified understanding of CR vs RC. I suppose there will be some CR questions even within the passage questions, while the RC questions are specifically just interpreting the passage itself without evaluating its merits (i.e. RC questions are the ones more like: what does the passage try to do, what is the highlighted sentence doing, what is overall conclusion of the passage, etc.)

      We're not bothered about what's happening with other Dept's or areas. We're concerned solely on costs due to inefficient management structure

      I had the same doubt too…
      1) but then it struck me that though option D talks about “not wasting money in other areas”, it doesn’t tell us directly/indirectly that they cannot do anything else…
      Option E talks about cost cutting AND the implemented plans…
      2) Using the negating methods will prove that E is correct…
      if D is negated: “ other than corporate structure, OC wastes money in other areas”, which will mean that OC is not cutting costs.
      All these are my opinions and they worked, please take it with a grain of salt 😃
