Anyone who is striving or making an effort to do better wether thats becoming a vegetarian..vegan..or just eating less meat or trying to waste less consume less etc etc i give them credit for putting in the effort💚
I have been trying to go zero waste and another easy change I found was to use bar shampoo and conditioner and bar soap. It eliminates the need for unnecessary packaging. That's also true for face washes (use face bar scrubs - I use one's from Lush) or make your own. Same goes for deodorant, I actually use one in biodegradable cardboard packaging from Meow Meow Tweet that you can find at Target. As a predental student, I was looking into alternatives for alternatives to a lot of dental related items. You can buy compostable floss in glass containers from Dental Lace. And make your own mouthwash and toothpaste. I personally don't like most recipes for toothpaste but there are also options for toothpaste that comes in a metal container like David's that can be recycled. One thing for people who have periods is to look into reusable pads and menstrual cups. Honestly, if you really look into it, there's an alternative to almost everything (except medication, that one hasn't been something I have been able to avoid).
clean the labels off the medication bottles and mail them here: Malawi Project 3314 Van Tassel Drive Indianapolis, IN 46240 they use old clean medicine containers to use where they don’t have med bottles for people in rural areas. also whole foods collects polypropelene (plastic type 5 ) if that’s a need (i wear daily contacts and they’re 5 so i bring them there).
wow this came at such a perfect time for me!! a couple weeks ago I suddenly realized how much waste I was producing and was like wait I have to stop! thanks for making this type of content
Sustainability has become an important focus for me in the past year or so, so thank you for this video Jenny. Also loving the frequent updates lately! Feels like I'm being spoilt 💝
As a college student living on campus I tend to think that I can't do much to make an impact, but your videos have been very insightful & eye opening. Thanks so much for speaking about what you're passionate about, it's making a difference! I went from thinking that there was absolutely no way that I could ever go waste free, to seeing how I can make small steps in my daily life to become a more conscience person about how I am impacting the environment.
Caroline Davenport Think of it as voting, your one vote does matter. Having a sustainable lifestyle in some form is impactful no matter how small or big.
For cleaning, white vinegar and baking soda make a really good job! I use them for almost everything with essential oils for the smell Your content is so great ☀️🌱❤️, your a style icon for me !! Love from France
Enjoyed this video - some fresh ideas that aren't so generic. I didn't really consider the energy used to charge my phone/the effect of using low power mode can have. I'm really bad about keeping my laptop charging when using it at home, and not turning off the power strip. I just did all 3 of those things now. Thanks girl!
one thing that i have found to be suuuuper awesome is learning how to sew! because then not only can you repair clothing or bedding or whatever, you can also take old clothes and turn them into other things like quilts or pillowcases or little toys if you have kids and really give those things a totally new life and extend the materials used!
This video was so helpful because it reminded me of all the things that I CAN do and that I’ve really been slacking on. Living on a college campus, it’s kind of hard to do some of these things but honestly any effort helps. I even sent this video to my boyfriend to hopefully inspire him too about trying to reduce his waste. He actually bought both of us reusable metal straws so I think I might’ve gotten to him a little bit! Thanks for all the help Jenny 💜 You inspire me everyday and I absolutely adore all the videos you make. Love you so much ❤️
I just moved back to NYC this weekend and was of the mindset that I'd work on becoming low waste, but throughout the moving process created SO MUCH trash and am not too proud... but at least this video came at a perfect time!! I'm looking forward to implementing these changes as I settle in. Please continue to share your tips as you learn more, it is beyond appreciated!!
One tip I think people often overlook is checking places like Facebook Marketplace for used makeup. By used I don't mean heavily used and disgusting. There are a lot of gently used or new items people are selling that can be sanatized and makeup is something that most people will throw out if they don't sell it or give it to people they know because thrift stores won't take it. Some women's shelters will but most prefer new in packaging items. Just a sneaky way for makeup lovers to reduce waste and save money.
we stan a sustainability queen. also, yes - this is so inspiring as i'm already doing a few of these, but i always learn more and am looking for ways to improve my carbon footprint. so, thanks for sharing these tips!
girl when you mentioned power strips and low power mode i immediately checked my phone and laptop and they were both fully charged yet still plugged in so i yanked out the chargers turned off my power strip and put my phone on low power mode akldjlkdjflksjflkdsjf thanks for the tips. i only really carry around a takeya water bottle which is a great investment. my fam recycles but we need to do so much better when it comes to choosing our groceries. i love the reusable rags i want to do this but my mom seems to think paper towels are too convenient but ill convince her eventually. loved the cow print sweater its super cute
Loved this video so much! As someone who considers themself pretty well-versed in the sustainable living realm, I had no idea about the microplastics. Patagonia really is such an amazing brand pioneering a sustainable lifestyle.
if you get a reusable spray bottle or reuse an empty spray bottle from a used up cleaning supply I highly recommend DIY-ing just a 1:1 ratio of vinegar:water to clean basically anything! and for serious cleaning jobs I love Dr. Bronner's SAL Suds - its' a stronger but still natural cleaner and is really great at removing stains, etc.
Heyy Jenny loved the video. Very informative and to be honest I kinda love this long videos, your voice is just so smooth (idk I just like the sound of your voice)
As encouragement I just want to say: You don't need to do zero waste perfectly, we still reap huge benefits if anyone simply TRIES doing zero waste, even if imperfect. It's really just so important to be intentional, and try your best!!
hey jenny o was recently lear ing about this food co-op in brooklyn called park slope which has amazing high quality groceries for 20-40% less than other grocers. the only thing is to be a member this is mandatory volunteer time but it is so minimal compared to how amazing the store is! if its close to you definietly worth checking out!
I think that two of my friends used to go there and would always rave about it! They lived in the area but unfortunately Park Slope is about 40 min from me :/ sounds so amazing tho I've always wanted to be apart of a Co-op!
Do you have any tips for being a student and being more eco conscious? I feel like doing projects and doing class work at uni can really be wasteful for me
I really would love if you did thrifting for plus size or at least talk about it and give tips! I know you are not plus size but you have such a good perspective on thrifting in a general sense!
thank you for your tips and advice about low waste. you are an inspiration 💖 I'm trying to reduce waste and recycle and reuse as much as I can... Also I"m thinking about the foods wrapped in plastic we tend to buy a lot lately and there is even newly opened store in my neighbourhood that sells everything without packing and it's organic and stuff but... it just so much more expensive it makes me mad
There isn't much of a sustainability culture in my country so where i live we don't have a recycle plant or anything like that :( However, a bill has been passed some time ago prohibiting the use of plastic bags in stores (yay!) and the use of straws (yay!) so that's a good start! And we don't have thrift stores but i love but a lot a people have started doing "garage sales" so i always try to go and check second hand clothes there!
haha i really wondered if people were gonna think I was crazy for saying that but it really does make me feel safer too! So glad (and also sad? that we have to feel unsafe) that I'm not alone on this!
I'm Mexican so buying tortillas also bothers me because of the plastic. But you can make your own tortillas, it's not anything new to Mexicans but the flour you need usually comes in paper bags.
Isnt it a paper bag but then lined with plastic??? Like where the brand name and instructions are at. I heard that if it's shiny, it means it plastic. But if its actually paper, cool! Imma start to recycle/reuse it! 🖒
Starbucks sells reusable plastic cups (they look exactly like the grande size paper cups) for 2 or 3 bucks at every location and you can reuse them there for coffee! I also know some places give a discount if you bring your own cup. I know pret a manger does this!
Emm hi! I have one too :) I bought it when I was first getting to be more conscious of my waste. Even though it’s a lot better than disposable cups, it is still made out of plastic :( the ideal is glass or metal or anything secondhand that’s about to go to landfill!
Emma M I know 😓 Plastic sucks. But it’s a good initiative and will help save a lot more paper cups and especially the plastic lids! Also like Jenny mentioned it’s nice that it’s already the perfect size so I don’t feel awkward trying to measure correct amounts for prices at shops! 😊
I have a question (because I honestly want to know if it's good or bad) I'm part of a pretty big family and we have ceramic plates but we mostly use paper plates because washing dishes is a lot of work lol, I've tried to tell everyone rinse them off really quickly and recycle them or put them in our green can but what I really wanted to know was if buying and using paper plates is still sustainable and/ or eco friendly?
Maddie Clark the most sustainable way of addressing this scenario would just be to use your actual plates and then just taking the 20 seconds to wash them after use. If your family still insists on using paper plates though I recommend composting them! You might not be able to recycle them because there’s food waste on it and you can’t really recycle food and grease
Emma M thanks for responding to this, this helps a lot, and we have a green/compost can that allows you to throw grease or food soiled plates and cups so thats what I've been trying use more often, anyway, thank you!
I think there is a huge cultural effect in terms of low waste. For example, many of the things you mentioned such as using cloths instead of paper towels or not throwing away the cut offed vegetables are just normal things for us (my culture).
*When it comes to recycling food containers such as cans and jars, always make sure to rinse out the insides and peel off the paper label so they are able to be recycled properly. Items that are "contaminated" in food residue do not get recycled!!!*
anybody got a good bar face soap to reccomend? for reference i have combo and acne-prone skin,(i already tried sappo hill and it didn’t work out) so something gentle would be best.

also vodka makes a good cleaner! it's just ethanol and we use diluted versions in my research lab to clean things, so it is effective :)
This is very helpful! You are right the convenience of using plastic and being wasteful distracts us from the damage we (us humans) are fostering 🌸
It always surprises me how well timed videos can be! I was just thinking that I need to be more eco friendly and sustainable! Thanks! 👼🏻💌
