    When I used the Japanese restrooms for the first time I was shocked and amazed. I did think though "if the door locks up and I need to escape I can’t go underneath or through the top that easily" maybe that’s why our restroom doors are smaller

  • @SongWolf27
    @SongWolf27 2 роки тому +20

    The origin of the doors not reaching the floor in a public washroom stems for 2 reasons. First, if someone is incapacitated, they can be seen laying on the floor and get help sooner. Also, there are a lot of issues with public toilets. Due to their excessive use, they tend to overflow. The door being elevated allows flood water to escape to the drain more easily.

    I'm Canadian, and I live about 20 minutes from Niagara Falls. That one young woman totally got scammed. Tipping about 20% of the total bill is pretty good, 15% being more normal. Maybe more if you really liked the food and service, but more than the food? Someone took advantage of her and ripped her off. Feels bad, man. Very un-Canadian.

      I think it was more that she offered the wrong amount and the server not being very honest accepted it instead of telling her it was wrong. No fault to the Japanese lady, all the fault falls on the server not being honest. I also think it's great that she actually thought about a tip since it's not Japanese culture to do so.

    In the US there have been issues with people doing inappropriate things in public restrooms and having that sort of half door is meant to discourage that. We all hate those doors as well. Also, some men don’t like putting up the toilet seat so I imagine this is why the horseshoe seat is there.

    I'm a Canadian that frequents Niagara Falls often and I can say that sometimes there is a mandatory gratuity, especially in tourist areas (because of these cultural differences I suppose) but it is usually a percentage of the bill, maybe 15-20%. If she paid more than the food cost than it seems that she was ripped off and that is very disappointing to hear, not the reputation us Canadians have become known for and take pride in.
    As for the bathrooms, I've always heard that the gaps under bathroom stalls were to make the floors easier to clean. I always assumed that the "horse shoe" shape toilet seat was because some men are too lazy to lift the seat. Being a man myself I never questioned whether or not the same seats were used in the women's bathroom so now I'm not sure what the "horse shoe" is for.

    The toilets here in America have the tiny stall doors to discourage people from doing inappropriate things, to see if a person is passed out on the floor and let the water from an over flowing toilet get to the drain more easily. The horseshoe shaped toilet seat comes from an old law, 1950-1960's, about not letting the genitals touch the toilet seat.

      Really?! I feel the opposite. In the U.S., you seem to be judged or looked down on if you’re dressed differently/outside the norm (not to include Brooklyn NY of course). While in Japan, people tend to dress really really nice, with a few having a style I would consider new aged or avant-garde, something I’d see in edgy or hipster like fashion magazines. For example the girl in that Girl Scout/military looking uniform.

      She mentioned online comments. I assumed the japanese lolita community is just as highly critical of each other as the english speaking one, but maybe she's talking about a non lolita commenting something negative about a lolita online.
      As for irl reactions cities in japan are a lot better place to be in when you wear alternative fashion than many other places in the world.
      If you wear alt fashion in many places in the world there's a much bigger chance someone will come up to you and say something crappy, or yell at you or pick a fight compared to people in japanese cities. In japanese cities people will still have negative opinions about alt fashion but they're just less likely to voice them.

    When I wear lolita around, I rarely if ever, get any negative responses. Usually it's a younger guy (like teens, early 20's) shouting something rude or teenage girls pointing and laughing. If I were around that age, maybe it would bother me, but it doesn't. Most of my interactions are very positive and people enjoy seeing what I wear. A lot of people suprisingly say that they like my coordinate, rather than "nice costume" etc. I live in Ohio, so lots of rural areas but I'm close to populated cities. So even here, it's mostly positive, at least 98% of the time.
    There is of course, negative discussion by people online. I'm sure there are photos or videos of me on someone's social media, but I'll never see them. It doesn't bother me because I'm enjoying myself. People who do these things are often very insecure about themselves and feel like negative or harsh commentary on other people makes them look good. It gives them a fleeting ego boost. But in reality, someone who is confident in themselves doesn't need to do this. They just exist and live their life how they please.

    I've seen the question about the floor gap a lot.
    Honestly, the reason is they are easier to clean under. That's about it for the official reason. Businesses also justify the floor gap for toe clearance for disabled people, to see peoples shoes as a way to tell if the stall is occupied, and as an easy access for emergency services (like the hospital or fire department) if there were an accident.
    I don't think any of these reasons are really a good reason to keep the floor gap, but the materials are cheap enough and the design is integrated into our country enough that I don't think they'll be going away any time soon. I will say, one thing that is nice, is that with out wide use of toilet paper, if you run out the person in the next stall can pass you a roll underneath the gap.
    As for the toilet seats. They are primarily designed that way for clearance to wipe with toilet paper.

    Most americans or canadians who wear shoes in their houses actually wear a pair of inside shoes, which are usually a pair of comfortable sneakers or loafers that they only wear inside the house (and will never be worn outside the house) and they wear a different pair of shoes when they go outside. Inside shoes basically play the same role as slippers. The reason that people wear inside shoes is that it's consider bad manners or rude to walk in socks or slippers when people visit your house. The stereotype of the north american walking around with dirty shoes in their house is untrue and at worst very rare.

    yes, the toilet is the most important thing when visiting other countries. In Thailand, we also have a hose (just like in Iran) at least we can clean our bottom though it is manually unlike Japanese toilets (they are really the best ever with those warm seats so good in the winter) when I was visiting countries like England and Ireland, they don't have a hose (just normal toilets not even like the Japanese ones). Maybe it makes it easier to mop the floor? I hate tipping culture in America. I tip 15% if I tip. I never tip for take out food but I do tip if I sit down and they serve me. If you are poor at math then just do 10% i.e. $30 = $3 tip. Tip more than cost of food was definitely a ripoff. Zero is always an option and if you aren't a repeat customer I can't see the downside.

    The reason girls have horseshoe toilet seats instead of rings is due to company budgetary cheapness. It's cheaper to get 100 horseshoe seats in wholesale price than 25 horseshoes and 75 rings without the wholesale price. Also the horseshoe toilet seats are less material and thus cheaper.
    The reason for the half doors is a few reasons, The main reason is for safety, both for the occupant and the people outside. If you have a stroke or seizure then people will see you laying on the floor. If you enter a restroom, you can more easily see that the room is secure and there aren't any perverts hiding in the stalls. The second reason is for janitorial clean up. The third reason is budgetary, half doors are cheaper than full doors, both to install and to clean.

    I don't understand American public bathrooms either and avoid using them. Having used Japanese public bathrooms, I have to say I like them better. I've only traveled to Japan. Hmm, I had a waiter in a restaurant with 1 English menu tell me I couldn't have a Japanese menu when I asked in Japanese (this was 2015 pre Olympics prep for foreigners). I do think the waiter was nervous though.

    Also Japan in cafe/restaurant, sometimes people just put their laptop, phone, wallet, bag on table and walk away. In my country, those will be gone in 5 sec.

    Funny how many Americans are justifying the gaps around the toilet doors by saying that people will do "inappropriate things" in the toilets. People in other countries are no different than Americans when it comes to primal urges. So why do other countries not have large gaps around the toilet doors? Shouldn't other countries also do that it "inappropriate things" are done in toilets? If, on the other hand, Americans truly are the only people on the planet who do "inappropriate things" in toilets, what could possibly explain that?

    As an American, a Brooklyn born New Yorker, now living in New Jersey, one thing I will say is, the bathrooms in Japan are better (according to what I've heard and read, I haven't been there myself). The toilets in Japan have built-in badeaus that shoot a stream of water into your ass to clean it thoroughly. In America, we're still wiping our asses with paper, which is completely inefficient. Too many Americans are running around with shit crumbs on their asses and in their underwear, especially the overweight ones, which is a majority of the country! Why are we wiping our asses with paper? Who thought that was a good idea? How many more trees do we need to cut down to satisfy the consumer culture of America? Americans are completely fine with their taxes being wasted on war efforts against countries that wouldn't stand a chance against us in a million years, but are up in arms whenever anyone proposes tax money going towards our piss poor education system and our failing infrastructure!

    OMG, they talk about being attacked for looking different, how rigid is Japan though?! I mean, can't even wear hair colour other than dark brown or black if you are working or studying if you are Japanese. They have it all wrong, too rigid in Japan, more freedom in the west. The worst experience abroad was in backwards Croatia, in the capital city bus station. Their toilets were porcelain holes in the ground that you had to squat over. I waited 4 hours to get back to Slovenia where I was staying to use a proper toilet! I wish we had heated toilet seats in Australia -where I live, it is cold in winter, I am on the coast and the winds are crazy strong, cold and it is not nice and warm until at least maybe November or December..... brrr.....

    American public toilets are mostly disgusting, really depends on where it's located.
    The gaps in toilet stalls are most likely because it's cheaper, or the designer is a perv, but you'll also get reasons like if there's a medical emergency in the stall, the perv peeping on you can notify EMT/Police.
    I can't think of any reason someone would pay a tip that cost more than the bill, other than getting ripped off, the server was a scumbag.

    • @moscaonthewall
      @moscaonthewall 2 роки тому +2

      But even with short stall doors and walls there isn't a big problem with peeping toms (at least not anywhere I've been). There's an unspoken etiquette in restrooms: you stand well away from a closed door and slightly bend down to see if there's any feet. Plus, most bathrooms are gender specific. Any co-ed restroom is usually a single toilet with a locking door.

    • @W4kT3k
      @W4kT3k 2 роки тому +2

      @@moscaonthewall Well yeah, I didn't mean to imply it was everywhere all the time, but it does happen and the gaps are a bit ridiculous.
      It can always be worse though, when I was in high school, to keep kids from smoking in the restrooms, they locked all the doors except for the ones on the main floor, and removed the doors, not only to the restrooms but to the stalls. If you had to go, you had to do it in view of others, it was so incredibly incompetent and lazy of the schools faculty.
