I have been an artist for years and never really had a good grasp on color and it’s apparent in my work! Thank you for explaining color in such a clear and logical way!
Exactly. This is how I teach painting. Cool primaries and warm primaries. I also make them use a super limited palette on at least one painting. This is so they will understand that mastering color and value relativity is more important than using a specific color.
I think everyone , before starting to paint , should watch videos like this and get to understand the colour wheel . Quite apart from saving a fortune buying every colour of the spectrum , it gives much more natural colours. I watched a guy doing landscapes and in a lot of his videos he uses just three colours , I now understand why more clearly. Thank you for this video and information. Having watched a number of videos by different people I have twenty different tubes of paint , I will buy three primary colours and work with them .
Thank you so much for this very clear, concise and interesting way to explain colour mixing. As a textile artist I tend to work with ready made colours, so mixing actual paints had been extremely frustrating and mysterious to me even though I have worked my way through colour theory etc. This was brilliant, thank you so much!
Got it! Extremely helpful. Having too many colors was a problem I had years ago. I would go out and buy every color I could afford. My paintings were crazy and painting them was frustration. It wasnt until I limited my pallet that I became a good painter. That was the solution for me. My cools and warms were easy to mix, depth was easy to create, color harmony was spot on and my paintings were pleasing to look at. If I would have learned what you just taught early on, I would have been a good painter much earlier. Good job!
Hi Patrick! Thanks for the comment! Yes, when I first started out I could only afford five or six colours, and I made some great paintings that sold quickly. So then I went out and did exactly what you did and bought every colour imaginable because I thought that was what you were supposed to do if you could afford them all! Then for about 2 years my painting practice took a nose dive and I couldn't figure out why they weren't any good anymore, despite all the expensive materials I had at my disposal. I guess we all have to learn the hard way! Thanks again and have a wonderful time painting!
Thanks so much for your lessons. This is a must for any beginner who just picked up some paint and started painting like me. Your explanations are not tedious at all for those of us that want to get better. Please don't underestimate how much knowledge you have to share. I started painting in February 2014 and have many pictures but my next painting will be that good old color wheel followed by the hue chart. Awesome dude!
Thanks for sharing such a lovely and encouraging comment! I'm really excited that you've been inspired to follow these lessons and I'd love to see the paintings you end up making as result! Send me an update!
Wow! That is the best color mixing tutorial ever. I'm definitely going to expand my palette to take advantage of the warm/cool aspects. Thanks so much for this video. It seems like color temperature is something experienced artists fail to pass on in their "how to paint" videos.
Very good video, and very entertaning to watch as well. The way you deliver the information (your voice tone and hair included!) makes it so entertaining!. Best video about basic color mixing technique.
Hello Michael, I have watched ton of videos on color theory, mixing, tones, etc on youtube since last 2 days as I want to really understand and get it clear. I just chanced upon your video just to find that your video has been the MOST helpful and clear of all. I am so so happy to have found your video and really grateful to you to have made this concept so clear in such a well articulated manner. Thanks, thanks, thanks!! I am surprised that your video (the best of all) has the lowest views, i am baffled to see that. Your effort deserves the best viewership. Keep posting Michael. Thanks again!!
Hi Joy. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Unfortunately, you are repeating a common myth/misconception and one which I attempted to correct in the video previous to this one "The Secrets of Colour Temperature (Warm and Cool Colours) - How to Paint #3": ua-cam.com/video/XGSsbt2GwsU/v-deo.html LET ME BE VERY CLEAR: Not all reds, yellows and oranges are Warm, nor is every blue, green and violet Cool! There are Cool reds, yellows and oranges, and there are also Warm blue, green and violets! Until you understand this basic fact of colours, you will forever struggle to mix the colours you want. The video you linked to is full of so many egregious mistakes that it should be taken down! Don't listen to that instructor!
Simplicity is beautiful! You broke it down (in all your color videos) in a way that CLICKED with me! Finally, I GOT IT! Now I can answer my own questions about why I chose cool red to go with....! Thank you so much for the clarity you brought to this subject! Fantastic! Excellent! (Just found you!)
Thank you Ludmila! I really appreciate your comment! It's very rewarding to hear that I've been able to help you on your creative journey! Have a great weekend, Michael
Hi, I've been painting for 4 years, completely taught by UA-cam, and this is by far the clearest anyone has ever explained colour. After 4 years I feel like it's all become so clear to me. Do you have any downloadable courses I could buy.
You are great! This information is so helpful. In all the art classes I’ve taken no one goes in depth about color and value. I get stuck in dealing with the value of the color.
Wow, super helpful. You are very concise. This is the first of your videos I stumbled upon and I now see I will be watching more of them. I did exactly what you said so many people do. I went out and got 1 blue, 1 red and 1 yellow. Oh hey look, the color wheel. Well I'll be darned, that is not just a fancy pattern for displaying colors in a pleasing manner. Sometimes ya gotta just step out of your element with both feet to force learning you didn't know you needed though. Much appreciated.
Thank you Russel for sharing your story! It's frustrating that art supply stores reinforce these outdated ideas by selling introductory painting sets with 1 blue, 1 red and 1 yellow. Unless people like you make a point of searching out the truth, they assume that there really is such a thing as "primary" colours that they can use to mix all the colours of the rainbow! I'm so happy that you kept searching and that we found each other! Have a great weekend!
Thank you mapontocom for the comment! Yes, many artists say this to me. It seems art school these days is more concerned with theory and less with technique, which is very unfortunate. But that's another conversation entirely!
Very informative videos for this beginner artist. Its a shame in community that there isn't anyone to teach basics(formal education of course does). Thank you.
Once for an art project, I tried eating only blue and yellow foods for an entire month. Bananas, Kumquats, Corn Bread, Cheese Puffs, Mac n Cheese, Mustard, Egg Yolks, all of course smothered in Butter. I also ate Blueberries, Blue cheese, Eggplants, Blue oysters, Blue M & M's,even Blue Waffles washed down with Blue Hawaii's for nightcaps.....and to my amazement, It worked. I'm now the proud father of a 14 Foot Green Anaconda !!
Awesome video! I have watched all the videos in this series and you definitely have helped me so much in mixing colors. Best info that I have seen on mixing colors. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I appreciate it.
You just made my day! Thank you for sharing your positivity with me! It's a great feeling to be able to help someone else understand the secret world of painting! I wish you all the best on your journey as an artist!
Just found your channel and I’m glad I did. Thanks so much for all the information and demos. Dry well explained and demonstrate why one color can be dull compared to another that is not. Great job. I will watch all your videos from the beginning! Congratulations and best wishes ! Just subscribed to your channel! 👍
Thanks Crisalida! Please let me know what other videos you think I should make that would also help you! I'm currently filming more of them. Thanks for the sub! -- Michael
Great video series. Got a question for you if you're still on the youtube... what happens if you mix pure blue with pure yellow, and why does the CMY color wheel suggest you'll get grey?
Can you please tell the best pigments to be added to off-white colour... Can you please also tell how much quatity of pigment is to be added with 1 litre off-white
New videos coming in May 2019! What aspects of painting and drawing do you find most challenging? I’m currently writing and planning a whole new series of instructional videos, and I’m looking for YOUR ideas! SUBSCRIBE, turn your notifications on, and stay tuned! - Michael
I know this is an old video but can someone answer me this ... Say I was painting something red would you use black or green to make it darker for shading. If green would you use a dark green to make it very dark and light green to make it not quite as dark, or would you just use more or less of the same shade of green?
I'd use paynes gray or nuetral tint if I had either one. If no have then I'd grab a dab sheet and try black and green then use the one that worked best. If green worked best I'd start with a bit of green like hookers and add till I got the result I wanted.
I like your teaching style! I browsed through your other videos, if you could sprinkle your channel with a few more shorter videos, I’d be able to watch them more easily :d (such as tips or shorter ideas to complement your more in-depth subjects). You are very clear and concise which i like very much :D
awesome video as always. I have a question, do you recommend buying the munsell color book, i heard from others artist who own the book to be a good investment.
Thanks for leaving such a lovely comment! While the contrasts between the different Oranges aren't as obvious as the Violets and Greens, the Oranges are not all the same. The Orange mixed with Warm Yellow and Warm Red is more "saturated" and has a greater level of "intensity" than the other three, which are closer to the neutral core. If you mixed each of those Oranges with other colours, the differences would become even more apparent.
MarkowskyArt please make a breakdown of painting and explain how the artist expressee his feelings in the paintings i am trying to express my self through art and its hard
Wow! That sounds like an interesting video! You're asking some very big and complex questions though. Even I find it hard to express myself through my art. It can take many years of practice and failure before positive results start to become more common. I'll try to address your question in an upcoming video!
Hi Shaina. Thanks for watching my video. I think you're pointing at a common point of confusion, and something I also struggled with. The short answer is that the difference between the yellows which you describe as being "brighter" and "darker" is that one contains greenish/blue pigments, while the other contains orange/red pigments. A colour's "TEMPERATURE" is entirely different than the same colour's "INTENSITY" or "VALUE," which is covered in episode 2: ua-cam.com/video/D0Wod-Nle2E/v-deo.html). 1) "TEMPERATURE" is when a colour is "hot" (contains orange/red pigments) or "cold" (contains greenish/blue pigments) 2) "INTENSITY" (otherwise known as "chroma") is when a colour can be said to be "saturated" like florescent yellow or "desaturated" like a black & white photo, and this is determined by how much (or how little) pigment is in the paint/light. 3) "VALUE" is when a colour is modified with white to make "tints," grey to make "tones," or with black to make "shades." I hope that helps!
Absolutely! You will notice these same results with watercolour, gauche, and even house paint! One thing to keep in mind though is that cheap ($2 a tube), student grade paint (like the kind I was using in this video) is full of fillers and artificial pigments, and few (if any) natural or "pure" pigments, which can be very expensive. Cheap paint tends to lose "intensity" when it is mixed with other colours because it's formulated to look great out of the tube and not necessarily mixed with other paints; if you've ever mixed house paints together you'll know that it goes dull-grey very quick. On the other hand, if you are using expensive ($40 a tube), artist grade acrylics or oils (I personally recommend "Gamblin"), you will actually see that the oranges, violets and greens remain relatively high in intensity when mixed together, because you're starting with exceptionally high quality materials. In the world of video editing we have a saying, "Crap in, Crap out," which means if you start with bad quality video or audio footage, your final video will invariably be of poor quality as well. Similarly with painting, the colours you mix will always limited by the quality of the orginal colours you began with.
This a great video. Thank you for sharing. One question, I don’t know why but the blues feel the opposite for me. Ultramarine blue being cooler than Cerulean blue. I got curious about it, and found this: sharonhicksfineart.com/blog/57475/warm-or-cool-ultramarine-blue-vs-thalo-blue- What is your take on it?
French ultramarine moves away from green and therefore is warm and actually has red in it even though you cannot see it . Cerulean blue has green in it and moves away from red ,therefore it is a cool blue.
Reuven Magnes thanks for your reply. I think I figured out my confusion. For the subtractive color system (where a red, blue and yellow are the primary colors) this makes sense. Also, the way how they neutralize each other proves it. Modern subtractive system use Cyan, Magenta and Yellow as primaries. But for the additive system (where red, green and yellow are the primary colors), I think they switch, the link I mentioned above is a good reference for that system. Interestingly James Gurney combines both ideas on a color wheel that he calls YRMBCG, where he treats all the following as primaries: Yellow, Red, Magenta, Blue, Cyan, Green. You can find that on his Light and Color book or here: gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2010/02/color-wheel-part-7.html
A little note to Mr. Markowsky: I ran your video a 2x speed and felt that speed was just about right. Some videos are sped up by their authors and are easier to digest. You might give some thought to going along a little faster. It's so easy to go on to the next video like channel surfing. Your videos are too good for that, but they are a little slow. Hope you take this comment in the spirit it was intended. If you're offended, you have my permission to come down here and punch me in the nose. Later.
Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and for leaving a thoughtful comment! It's always a hard balance between going too slow and creating boring videos and going to fast and skipping over details of the painting process that people find helpful to see. In any event, I'm a pacific who doesn't believe violence accomplishes anything, so your nose is safe!

Wow... that was extremely helpful. I wish you were a watercolourist 😢
If one is a lover of artworks but doesn't have the skill to draw, can he still make profits from buying from real artists?
Of course, you can firstly build up your gallery as an art lover.
Then sell your artworks to known art collectors.
Like Mr nickyhall of Hantzgroup.
Who has a large community of Art buyers.
Once you paintings are great I believe he will buy.
I have been an artist for years and never really had a good grasp on color and it’s apparent in my work! Thank you for explaining color in such a clear and logical way!

Very helpful. thanks
I'm not gonna lie - I came for the content and stayed for the hair. ;-)
This was a gem. You helped me understand what I’m doing wrong 😑 thanks so much now I can fix it 😃
8:40 I think the reason for not getting the big differences in color is because of the paint brand and the types of pigments they are using.
You are a fantastic teacher , thanks for breaking things down so throughly , love your videos!!!
Cool video ! Thanks ! 👍

Hi Gina! Thank you for your comment! Best wishes on all your future paintings!
it helped me a lot
Thanks Sapna! I'm glad I was able to help you on your creative journey! --Michael
I like your teaching style! I browsed through your other videos, if you could sprinkle your channel with a few more shorter videos, I’d be able to watch them more easily :d (such as tips or shorter ideas to complement your more in-depth subjects). You are very clear and concise which i like very much :D
Excelent !!!!! Amazing
dit was een goede uitleg dank u
awesome video as always. I have a question, do you recommend buying the munsell color book, i heard from others artist who own the book to be a good investment.
you are a god sent :)
Thank you Robin for the generous compliment!
this is the best video i ever watched
what about the oranges
are they all the same
Thanks for leaving such a lovely comment!
MarkowskyArt
please make a breakdown of painting
and explain how the artist expressee his feelings in the paintings
i am trying to express my self through art and its hard
Wow! That sounds like an interesting video! You're asking some very big and complex questions though. Even I find it hard to express myself through my art. It can take many years of practice and failure before positive results start to become more common. I'll try to address your question in an upcoming video!
MarkowskyArt thank you
THANK YOU!!!
My pleasure! Happy painting!
Why is the brighter yellow considered a "cool" color? I though "cool" colors were darker than the warm ones.
1) "TEMPERATURE" is when a colour is "hot" (contains orange/red pigments) or "cold" (contains greenish/blue pigments)
2) "INTENSITY" (otherwise known as "chroma") is when a colour can be said to be "saturated" like florescent yellow or "desaturated" like a black & white photo, and this is determined by how much (or how little) pigment is in the paint/light.
3) "VALUE" is when a colour is modified with white to make "tints," grey to make "tones," or with black to make "shades."
I hope that helps!
Lemon yellow has a little blue in it so it is cool whereas warm yellow has a tinge of red in it so it is warm
Thank you Shahzad Qurashi for restating my answer in a much more concise way! Much appreciated!
Thank u sir , you are welcome , god bless!
Hi Joy. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Unfortunately, you are repeating a common myth/misconception and one which I attempted to correct in the video previous to this one "The Secrets of Colour Temperature (Warm and Cool Colours) - How to Paint #3": ua-cam.com/video/XGSsbt2GwsU/v-deo.html
LET ME BE VERY CLEAR: Not all reds, yellows and oranges are Warm, nor is every blue, green and violet Cool! There are Cool reds, yellows and oranges, and there are also Warm blue, green and violets!
Until you understand this basic fact of colours, you will forever struggle to mix the colours you want. The video you linked to is full of so many egregious mistakes that it should be taken down! Don't listen to that instructor!

Would I be able to apply this exercise with oil paints?
What are the colors that make brown
This a great video. Thank you for sharing.
One question, I don’t know why but the blues feel the opposite for me. Ultramarine blue being cooler than Cerulean blue. I got curious about it, and found this: sharonhicksfineart.com/blog/57475/warm-or-cool-ultramarine-blue-vs-thalo-blue-
What is your take on it?
He forgot to say goodbye at the end of the video
Where have you been my whole life, are you a gemini? 🤔
I like eye subscribe 👌
I will watch and do in a week, I have a feeling you're an amazing instructor. Thank the heavens I found you.
