Oh my goodness, my friend and I recently had a conversation about good old coconut sponge and pink custard at school! A real blast from the past, it looks delicious! X
I remember this recipe. It is one of my favourite puddings. I also enjoyed chocolate cake with chocolate custard. And on a Friday at school we use to have fish and chips, some of the school dinners were delicious. Thank-you for the recipe. I love your cooking videos. Have a good day
You are a fantastic cook & I love your videos..I'm sure Mr whats for teas mother is so glad you married her boy with all that good home cooking! bonny lassie!
Oh this was one of my favourite puds when I was at school 100 years ago! Along with the jam tart with cornflakes on the top - definitely giving this a try! xx
I too remember this lovely dessert from my school days. I make it occasionally for my grandchildren, but haven't done the pink custard. I think that would be a novelty they would definitely enjoy! Thank you for reviving this dessert and those school day memories 😊💕💕
Honestly had forgotten about this since primary school (North Glasgow)! Used to love it. This and the chocolate sponge cake with custard we used to get. I don’t miss the spam and tongue though!
Hello from Northern Ireland, Cheryl. Our school cook Mary George used to slip me a piece of this cake out of the kitchen window at the back of the school. When I saw it on the menu, I new my luck was in that day. Sadly, Mary passed away in 2014, but whenever I see this recipe, it brings happy memories flooding back ❤
Our school cook used to make this, and tons of other puddings like this, when I was at Primary school in the 70’s She still lives in the same village I grew up in, and is in fact only two doors along from my dad. Both of them are now in their nineties!
Aww my mum used to make this! Sometimes she’d do the same cake mixture but instead of jam and coconut she’d put sultanas and chocolate chips. It was my favourite. She never bought shop bought puddings. I remember the custards school as well, usually it came with this sort of cake or an apple cobbler type thing.
I remember this so well from school, also remember we used to have a lemon sponge with a hot lemon sauce with it,I hated school dinners but loved the puds, really love your channel always such good ideas xx
Thank you, Cheryl, for another delicious recipe! I don’t think I’ve tried it before but with the pink custard it sounds extra special and I’m sure grandma what’s for tea must have loved it! 🍰💕
This takes me right back to school.. Oh how I loved school dinners lol especially the puddings.. Yes those big silver jugs with the runny pink custard.. Where I work, the canteen does fab puddings but they are proper man size portions.. Bakewell Tart is another favourite.. Shame I'm on bloody slimming world.. Thanks Cheryl always love to hear your lovely Scottish voice. Jules x
I've never heard of this dessert in the States but it looks so delicious I'm going to be making this gem! T y for sharing the recipe with us God bless 💚👵
This was a favourite in my schooldays and still is.I make it pretty regularly and at school it was always served with pink custard, I always send some to my sister because she loves it too, but alas she can't cook.Well that's her story and she's sticking to it.
We had this at school,it was called Manchester Tart.....I don't know why because it's not a tart and we had ordinary yellow custard. Thanks Cheryl...really took me back.
How neat-o-keen to see something from y'all's school days. Growing up in Michigan, we didn't have anything that nifty, but we did have (rectangle) Pizza Day, and Fish Sandwiches (with pickle and tartar sauce.) I don't really recall any desserts...I will have to ask some of my classmates if there was anything of note. :D I'm the only one who *loves* coconut in my house, so maybe it's something I can make for my friends - I'll have to do a survey eventually LOL!
Hiya Cheryl, new member here, gradually catching up with your videos! I made this yesterday-but in the slow cooker! Thought I’d experiment! Turned out lush ❤️
This cake so reminds me of Zingers. The only thing missing is some sort of creme filling....whipped, buttercream or marshmallow....in the center of each piece, much like Bismarks have fruit filling in their centers. I might make them in regular or mini muffin pans.
Cheryl, if it's not too much trouble, why not offer two choices then make the winning choice first and then the runner up when time permits. Gary Boyd is deeply disappointed and drowning his sorrows in quesadillas as an act of rebellion and quite possibly whiskey---although the latter is something to which he will neither admit nor deny. (I think we know he did!) :-D
Ooohhhh ty ty ty a blast from my past I loved this at school was just talkings about this with a group of friends the other day oh happy memories thanks again kind regards xxx
Thanks for this!! Last time I had this was when I was in junior school too!! (30+yrs ago) bringing back fond memories, I personally loved my school dinners (especially junior school) will try to make when I can pop to the shops!! Used to love I think it was called Manchester tart but I'm not 100% if that's what it's called??
Cheryl any chance you could make another school favourite GYPSY TART please please--I have looked for recipe to no avail and have no idea how to make one thank you xx
Och when the blackberry tray bake didn't make it I will tell you the coconut wasn't the only thing that was dessicated. I was here with a low chin and a big lip. Oh wait maybe it's decimated. But alas my choices are extremely consistent must say! Always backing the loser! We never had any pink food at school. Oh well that's the way the cake crumbles!
@@GaryBoyd02....A number of us, myself included, requested both desserts. Don't give up hope just yet.....or imbibe too much. And if you make quesadillas, you'll need tequila accompaniment in lovely margaritas.
That took me straight back to school assembly a rollicking hymn and us all giggling. I loved the desserts and pink custard was my favourite. The yellow one was too one lump or two, for me. Lovely to watch cooking thank you. Fly pie and concrete and pavement, too. Lol
Hi Cheryl, ? I have a tin of custard powder, brand name "HEARTH CLUB by CLABBER GIRL Custard Powder." I recognize the "CLABBER GIRL" brand. A very popular brand of baking powder ( bicarbonate of soda) here in the USA. The ingredients are listed as corn starch, salt, artificial flavor, yellow coloring. The instructions say: 2 cups cold milk, 2 tablespoons sugar, 3 level tablespoons custard powder. Mix custard powder with the sugar, add to 1/4 cup of the milk, whisk thoroughly. Boil the remaining 1 & 3/4 cups milk, stirring to prevent scorching, stir in custard powder, sugar, milk. Continue stirring until it thickens. Serve warm. ? Is this the same or similar to what is used in Scotland? Thank You, I will make your pud, it's easy and if Mr. WFT'S mom likes it, this old lady wants a taste. Bless you for thinking of her!🙋♀️
I remember this well from school and I am 73yrs now thank you for the memory xx

Morrisons sells a packet of instant ( the kind u add boiling water to) pink custard...and it's actually quite nice.
