- Hi folks!
Welcome back to what’s for tea! And I hope you’re having a great day so far!
For pudding tonight, I made this super naughty caramel tart :) Super tasty and very easy! Everyone likes this in our house. It takes me right back to my school dinner days!
This doesn’t require many ingredients, and there’s only two parts to the recipe…the tart case and the caramel filling!
You’ll get 8 generous slices from this (depending on how big you cut your slices!) so everyone can have a piece :)
I’ve listed everything I used below…in case you want to give it a go for yourself.
Thanks for stopping by and until I see you next, take care x
____________________________________________________________________
I Used-
For the caramel filling:
2 Tablespoons golden syrup (I used Llyons)
400g (14oz) Condensed milk (I used Carnation)
100g (3.5oz) Unsalted butter
100g (3.5oz) Soft brown sugar
For the base:
160g (5.6oz) Plain/ all purpose flour
115g (4oz) Unsalted butter
60g (2.1oz) Caster sugar

Thank you for the lovely recipe! I would love to try this, but I have to get a few more pans! Your new cutting board is really gorgeous! Your bike video is very cute as well! Is it a motorcycle or moped?
Hi Bebina :) Thank so much for watching! You obviously watched the entire video, so thank you :) It's a motorcycle....Triumph Thunderbird x
bebina I’ll respond at the end of meals of the week tomorrow 😊 thanks for your comment ❤️
We used to get caramel tart just like that at primary school with the sprinkles 😊. In a big traybake. Square slices. Delicious
Same here :) I was going to do it in a square pan...to keep it authentic, but ended up using the round pan...simply because it was loose bottomed.
The loose bottom pans are brilliant
Im so thrilled to have found ur video. Finally i can make a real caramel tart. My best school dinner memories are of this dessert. I Cant wait to make this with my children, they'll finally get to see what ive been raving about. Love how you make your pastry too... I usually add a little water.
My Mum is Scottish and she use to make this when I was a kid. I have been craving this for years. Looks yummy
This is one of those videos you watch at 11 pm and think "Damn...I have to do this right now, suddenly I'm starving."
You have taken me back to the best years of my life 1970s primary school. Thank you so much for the recipe x
Made this for my family and they loved it. A real blast from the past. Thanks so much Cheryl.
Fantastic! A trip down memory lane for me! I'm loving your videos & recipes - they're something I really enjoy when I'm isolated in the house & not at work during the lock down. Thank you so much!
oh, thank you for sharing. Reminds me of primary school days! Now living in the USA I find myself craving stuff from back home and have been hunting for a lot of recipes from home including old-school recipes and this was one of my favorite!
Thank you Cheryl, wonderful videos, so easy to follow. Sometimes i sit in bed in the morning and watch your videos to decide what i will be cooking that day, bless you for sharing.
I remember having this at school and everyone loved it. We called it Caramel flan and it had Cornflakes on top or sometimes chocolate sprinkles. I trawled the internet forages to find it and found it on old school dinners site and made it. Took me back to primary school lol. Thanks Cheryl. Have a lovely weekend xx

Oh my goodness! How Decadent and Delicious! Special Occasion Dessert! Thanks Cheryl.😋🇨🇦
Very similar to the Gipsy-Tart we used to have in London which i loved.Definately one i'm going to try!
Thank you for this recipe, I never had this at school but my Gran was a school cook in the 70s and used to make this at home too, she died a while ago now though my mum took up the mantle, she has a old bottle of Rayner's butter essence she used for this tart which is nearly gone and you can't buy anymore so we have it hardly ever these days, other essences have never given that same smell and flavour so I'll try this recipe and see if I can find that same feeling and taste
So pleased i found your channel. I'm 70 now and have never found a recipe to replicate my absolute school favourite. I will definitely be giving this one a try. Thank you.👍
Wow That Caramel tart brings back, so much memories! We used to have a Jam tart With Chocolate covered corn flakes, Golden syrup covered cornflakes, On top of the jam ttart! It was actually delicious, I suppose I was quite lucky our school dinners were amazing! And so whether ladies that serve them!🙏

Thanks for the recipes. I make quite a few of your desert recipes and they are always devoured by my family. I'll be making this one again tonight (It also takes me right back to school lunch times). I also have Triumph Thunderbird, but mine is a 1958. I suspect yours is a little more modern than mine.

You're such a good cook. My momther used to to it of with toasted coconut
I made a gypsy tart that was a disaster , and was going to try again but there are just so many recipes all conflicting each other. So imagine my joy at finding your recipe, no faffing about . Thank you so much ❤️
Like you JC i made gypsy tart ..... many times , and always end up in the bin. The recipes say to use evaporated milk and whisk for 20 minutes. I could never get it to set
Thankyou will try the recipe tomorrow.
I remember this from school dinners too! Although we called it chisel cake because it was always so hard! lol It’s no wonder I ended up with so many fillings! 🙄Thanks for bringing back the memories. 😊
I'm Vegan, so I never make your recipes, but I love watching just the same. I love this channel 👍
Aw thank you so very much, I really appreciate that :) Mr what's for teas Daughter is vegan :) She was vegetarian since the age of 10....and vegan since the age of 20, she's 25 now x
Love how easy this is, you are great at breaking down and showing us we could easily give it a go.
By any chance do you know how to make the sponge cake with colourful sprinkles that was served in primary schools? Absolutely loved that! xx
I mean u had me with the caramel and shortcrust and then u added custard ,pure perfection :)
I’m going to try this! My favourite ever followed by oil rig cake. Nobody seems to remember that though. It was a rich chocolate cake with chocolate sauce at the bottom.
Brilliant, just what i remember in my childhood at East Fulton Primary School in Linwood, always on a thursday :)
Thank you, always wanted to know this. Love your voice. Xx
Can't wait to try this, thanks. Omg just to add I love the accent 😍
Yum! Thanks🇨🇦❤️
OMG Cheryl!! That was one of my favourite puds at school! Served with thick chocolate custard 🤣 The other was that version but fudge?! I think, exactly the same with chocolate shavings on top. Ooooft!
Y’know you should do an ‘old skool’ school pudding playlist!! Oooo yummo! Not sure my blood sugars would like it but I will hahaha!
Oh gosh don’t get me started on the weather. 4 day heatwave here in Cambridgeshire (33-31C for 4 days - unbearable 🥵).
One of my kitties has now gone missing to top off the rubbish hot week, so I’m worried sick. Thanks for the video though Cheryl, always puts a smile on my face, especially seeing you at the end on the bike ☺️ Lovely chopping board too xx
Hi Laura :) I don't remember chocolate custard, but I do remember a pink custard lol :D Aw no about your cat :( How long has it been missing x
It looks scrummy. We used to get that in primary school. I used to help the dinner ladies clear up to get extra slices. Great memories. Thank you.
Man I wish I went to primary school where YOU did.
That looks fantastic take me right back to Hunters Tryst Primary School in Edinburgh
Add the butter and condensed milk first, then add your syrup and sugar once it is warm. Bring to boil slowly once sugar is combined, This will avoid burning the sugar initially. But yes stir like crazy :)
Great recipe and I really enjoyed making it :)
Totally reminds me of school
Yesssssss! Thankyou so much for doing this 🙂
I couldn't NOT :) It's a classic....thanks for watching x
I made it for my uncle and he loooooooooved it 🙂

Hi Cheryl just made this had you on my kitchen side following your steps lol it looks exactly like yours we eating for dessert later thank you xx
Aw Brilliant Diane! :) How did it go?
It was lovely just how I remember from school xx
You literally save my life every time I want something old school 😂 your Chinese chicken noodle is amazing!
Ah thank you! :) Yes, that's a fab wee recipe...almost identical to the takeaway soup isn't it? :) Thanks for watching
8C here in Newfoundland today..rain, drizzle and fog! Custard sounds like it would hit the spot tonight! Caramel pie will be on my menu soon!
looks amazing just like school dinners ,I used to take trips to the trongate in Glasgow just to buy this from a cafe lol xx
Colour looks authentic. Ingredients too. Except our school (Bath, West Country), never added chocolate sprinkles, so for me they kind of detract from the authenticity of the tart. In our neck of the woods, it was called Butterscotch Tart. Mums rushed to buy it on school fete day. Was always the first to sell out.
This dessert is so indulging, mouthwatering and tempting as ever...
Cheryl you've reminded me about my school days... I use to love caramel tart, butter scotch tart, corn flake tart and treacle tart with custard....
