  • Part 38! 1968 VW Radical Custom Ian Roussel And The Body Filler Experience 👽 🛸
Some theory on how Ian Roussel sets up a fiberglass panel to be straight for a final finish.
We are getting close to 100k SUBSCRIBERS! Please subscribe if you haven't and SET YOUR NOTIFICATIONS!
There are no rules in car customization, and if there was a rule it would be to go as far outside of the box as your fabrication skills can take you. Ian envisioned a simple and radical solution to this style of door opening. He walks himself and Jamie through the process, with pretty satisfying results. This is only the beginning. Come journey with Ian out of this world fully into the outer space of KUSTOMS. 🛸 🛸 🛸 🛸
"Car Building Is Fun! Lets keep it that way."~ Ian Roussel
    The backstory...
Ian has decided to lower this VW Beetle 6 inches to get it to the ground and start radically modifying this beat up 1968 VW Beetle, but like most things that were once going to find the fate of the crusher, he once again proves you can do some amazing things in your garage with some imagination, fearlessness and a willingness to make mistakes as you create. 🥴
His fascination stems from the seemingly limitless customization opportunities for this vehicle. Join Ian on a wild ride through his mind 👽 as he envisions then fabricates his most radical ideas to date.
Ian worked and studied at a bronze casting foundry as a young man, where he learned to create models, armatures, molds and finished sculptural artwork in all mediums and finishes. Ian is fascinated by the artistic process of sculpture. He brings this knowledge to his car customizations, to his TV show audience, and now he brings it to you, his growing UA-cam audience.

When I was working at Gene's, he would periodically come into the shop and run his hand over whatever panel you'd be working on. He would either give you the thumbs up or let you know where you were off. Then as he walked away he would look over his shoulder and say "Now get back to work" LOL! At 95 he still had an exceptional feel for smoothness, as did my co-worker Joe, ( an exceptional Body man) who had worked for Gene off and on for years.
Also putting on a thin cotton glove and running your hand across a panel greatly enhances
your "Feel" for high and low spots.
Great Video Guys. I really like the way you explain every step in terms that the average guy can understand. And no Ian, there ain't no easy way to get the mud out of the bottom of the can!!

I understand why you do the time-lapse. You’re creating for entertainment as much as, or more than, education. Gotta hold the viewers’ attention. For what it’s worth, I always wonder what I might’ve missed during that time.
Regardless, Ian’s explanations (and your questions/prompts) are awesome. I’m absorbing as much as I can, in anticipation of a future project.
Keep putting out the great product you have been, and thanks!

I love body work, The filling reminds me of plastering. You build it up and your straight edge is called a Darby you push the mud up and even the surface.except there's no sanding. But the same concept.Thats. How I learned how to do it. We would use an air file an block the high spots and hand block the rest We all have our own way and what works works . I just saw what you did and I can take some of what you did and use it.Thats if I go back to it again lol.Take care guys a burger and a beer sounds good.

Love your work down and dirty you’re right, there is no rules in body work. The only rule I would give to the new people that haven’t done. A lot of bodywork. Should not use a sharpie should use a lead pencil because the sharpie will bleed through your primer if you do not get it off. Before priming, and it may soak through the body filler just a thought From an old body man

This is so much like drywall finishing. I see that you pick a direction to remove material leaving a lap mark behind. You keep covering your edge marks. It’s possible to sand the lap marks down. You definitely have a good eye and good reflexes. You make it look so easy.

Make sure it's TEMPERED glass! Do not use any old window or chunk of glass. Make sure it is an automotive side window like Ian held up. I have an old 60 F100 rear window I use. Not gonna lie, I've dropped it a couple times and lucked out. Filler gets real slick when you clean it off with acetone. I just sand off all the old filler and wipe it sown with an acetone soaked cloth. Never liked the peel away paper stuff myself... Love this channel.

Great work Ian! As a point of reference, in woodworking when you have an expanse where you are cutting high spots away we use long pencil marks spaced a half inch apart to witness how far we are eliminating material. I know body men use guide coat for fine detail, but in rough forming a pencil can act the same way.

Ive only done a little bondo, I buy the pint size can, and I think what you are saying about adding instead of sanding, is that you can get in this cycle where you add bondo, sand it off, add more bondo, sand it off, and you just keep doing it over and over making small improvements each time, but what you do, is instead of sanding it down, you just knock down the high spots, and build up more and more until its more than thick enough everywhere, then you can block sand it.

When I was a mobile painter and body work guy we were hired to repair a hole in the roof of one of the cars that was in Casino the movie .
It was the car that blew up when Robert de Niro, was getting in starting it up.
We had to Bondo the whole roof after they welded in a piece of steel but it was a pretty cool to watch when they blew up the car we thought the Bondo would go everywhere, but it didn’t .

You got one of the best videos I've seen. Love your works. What I don't like is V Ws of any kind ..maybe the Carmgia. I'll be back for the caddy or Zepher. Yukon Territory

I would like to see all the sanding blocks you use because I know I'm going to need some from pretty soon here 😉😊

Dura blocks are the most used and affordable. They have a kit box with like 5 different sizes in it. The best blocks I've seen are made by black diamond pricey but top notch. 😉✌

I just learned this that makes body filler go on much smoother: Add a little fiberglass resin to the mixture. Maybe try a small test first. I did this an it makes a huge difference.
