- More fortress than stadium, the advantages of Azteca - with its capacity of 100,000, its elevation of 7,200 feet and its intimidating crowds - are legion. The US have never won an official match there and Mexico are virtually unbeatable in their Mexico City home.
The US national team will once again travel into the belly of the beast on Sunday night, when they take on Mexico in a World Cup qualifier at the famed Estadio Azteca (8:30 pm ET | FS1, Univision, UDN).
The latest episode of "The Hex" explores just what makes Azteca so special for Mexico -- and such a difficult place for the US.

Watching aztec Stadium at full capacity is like watching one of those Roman colisseums in movies like gladiator or series like spartacus, its colossal and intimidating.

The first thing that struck me the first time I assisted the Azteca from the exterior was the ROAR. Permanent roar of the stadium. Then when I first percieved the interior of the stadium, I had the same feeling than when you see the ocean. Just HUGE, bigger than you imagined.

ive only gone once in 2016 to watch club america but i want to go when its the mexcio national team vs a strong opponent or a final, that would be awesome. im jealous of my cousin who got to see mexico at the azteca in 2010 playing against spain after winning the world cup and almost beating them till they got lucky and tied it 1-1

David S to be fair, as a neutral (El Salvador fan), it can play a factor. However, the U.S. could just train either there a few days beforehand to acclimate their bodies or train somewhere like Denver. It shouldn't be an excuse overall, but it is an advantage to Mexico

@Alex Marchante I'm Mexican and I agree 100%. The US has been able to get a point or just a win (if anyone remember 2012 US beating Mexico 1-0 in a so called "friendly"). The Azteca is a joke now. Mexico again failed to outperform the US at home. When was the last time Mexico beat the US in the Azteca? Hmmmmm ..................................................... Oh yea 2009. When will Mexico now know that they will never beat the US in the Azteca? Why not play in the middle of the desert like Estadio Corona in Torreon or in my hometown in Guadalajara. Estadio Jalisco or Estadio Chivas? Just anywhere please!!!! Yea I give it that the Azteca has the "atmosphere" and "hostile". But pretty much anywhere else in Mexico has the same thing. It's not longer (I hate this word) the altitude thing anymore. Yup that what I have been seeing after 2009.

So I’ve been to Century Link field with the Seahawks, the Bell Centre with the Montreal Canadiens, Dodger Stadium with the LA Dodgers, Bryant-Denny Stadium with the University of Alabama football. But none of them compare to the level of loudness with those Mexicans and there soccer in the Azteca. It was too loud. Couldn’t even talk to my buddy who was only a couple feet away from me.

It's ridiculous what they did to it. Blame the NFL and their stupid ideals for trying to make American Football global for Mexico there was no need for that kind of renovation. Just fix the seats and provide better security. Hopefully they do not try to take away their cement because that's a area for the supporters to provide the noise and support for the teams that play home in Azteca.

whoever fault it was those renovations or the roof was not needed. all they needed to do was fix the seats or build the suites up higher.
huamanJR exactly the Santiago Bernabeu has there suites on the higher levels and it makes sense. Besides people who go to suites are just rich cunts who go there just to get drunk and eat they aren't true football fans.
I was there in 2009 at the Azteca. I am a Mexican American, and I can tell you it was magical! When Davies scored, it sounded like an empty stadium.... But when Mexico scored the second goal, it was like the 1985 earthquake all over again. The best experience in soccer I have ever had, I was 17 at the time!... After the game, Mexicans were shouting... "En donde estaaan,.. en donde estan, los pnchs gringos que nos iban a ganar... (repeat)... " I came out of the stadium smelling like beer. after each of the two goals, hundreds (if not thousands) of Mexican fans threw their beer cups in the air to the dismay of the lower seated fans, some say it could have been pee in there too.....Then, in the metro, they were singing, " Vamonos al Angel, vamonos al Angel! (Meaning to celebrate at the Angel de La Independencia) Every single Mexican was filled with enthusiasm over the win on that day, and it was awesome. Now, the American fans on the other hand, had to be escorted by gaurds because it was raining beer, and probably more surely not beer. But hey, everyone had fun at the end of the day and no one got their feelings hurt.

I literally have the soccer magazine where Davis scored the opening goal in el Azteca. that game was one of the best games for Mexico.
When i was about 7 years old i had a tournament INSIDE estadio azteca and holy crap i felt like a pro football player the stadium is massive! Its an amazing feeling to play inside it.
Game of the century played here in WC1970 Italy 4 West Germany 3 , 5 goals where scored in extra time. 😝
The Azteca is a living entity so just imagine it at full capacity, it has gone down due to updates used to be 120,000 then 100,000 now it's 80,000 but it's still freaking epic ❤❤

Best Stadium in North America
I'm from Arizona, have supported 🇲🇽 since I can remember and it's great to see past 🇺🇸 players talk about the rivalry and the Azteca, though it's not what it used to be. This is our area and hope Concacaf can improve more. Miss the tough games against Costa Rica, Honduras, United States.

I went to the game last sunday (1-1) my first time, god damn Estadio Azteca is the best football stadium, hands down!!
Now imagine being there at Azteca at full capacity and @ ringside, with several more thousands on the pitch. The awe and buzzing sound gives you chills and it kindda triggers some kind of chem reaction in your brain, as if you were high.
I hate it when non brits say pitch. It's a filed. Just like in football and baseball. Field, zero, uniforms...none of this british crap.
As an American it is one of my dreams to watch a game between to USA and Mexico at the Azteca. I much as I hate on them that stadium is legendary. I will ban the World Cup in the USA-Canada- Mexico is the final isn't played at the Azteca. It HAS to be played there. Even though we are massive rivals, I still respect Mexico as a footballing Nation.
It will be played in the US. I think Mexico and Canada will only host group stage and round of 16 games.

The clip they play right after Jared says his favorite goal was in 01 against the US....it's from the 2009 match against the US at the Azteca when Juarez drives past Donovan and barely manages to make an assist to Sabah, whom scores the 2nd goal to win the match. That match also had an amazing goal by Castro

As a Mexican American i never liked going to visit Mexico for the summers that i did but ive never been to Mexico City and seeing this makes me want to go just a lil bit.
I popped my live football match cherry at the Azteca. Way back in 2005. America vs Guadalajara Super Clásico league match. 3-3. I was 15 years old. I didn’t have modern technology in my pocket at the time to record the experience, but I can still smell it, and recollect the unique colors, and hear the roars of the stadium. I’ll never forget that experience.. I recommend y’all put it in your bucket list if you’re a true football fan.

Why does the US keep complaining about the altitude?! The elevation is not all that high compared to elevations found in the US. I am from Texas which has no elevation and have participated in cycling, running, and hiking in and around Mexico City with no problems. Stop blaming the altitude. I once saw a cartoon in Mexico portraying a giant brown eagle over a small bald eagle and the Mexican eagle saying yeah they needed more elevation, made more sense in Spanish 😂

Fifth time to Azteca next year for USA-MEX, if they get around to allowing fans to go to the game.
I went to the stadium when I was younger with my dad to watch Club America v Cruz Azul, they are semi rival teams and when I walked in there looking up, it was breathtaking. Me and my dad were amazed at the feeling, looking up at the people on top was like little ants. the game ended 3-3 and every goal was crazy, also seeing people of so my ethnicities, it was crazy because I expected just Mexicans, there were white, black, and Asians, and just everyone was enjoying themselves.

I live about 500 meters near to Azteca Stadium and it's fucking awesome being outside or inside when our MNT plays there.
Screaming "Mexico, Mexico", the "Cielito Lindo" song and of course the polemical chant "Eeehhh Puuuutooo" (I can translate as: "Eeehhhh arsehole") it's an amazing experience.
Not to mention the stadium that 2 legends received a World Cup title ! Maradona and pele ! I can’t wait to see that stadium . In all honestly the Mexicans themselfs make it what it is they’re hard core futbol fans i can’t even imagine how the streets in the us and Mexico will be when they get their first world title

Playing at Aztec stadium AT 12PM with the sun and fans is hell... only costa rica have manage to beat us under those conditions... and honduras but it was a rainy night. The games at Azteca should of kept beign at noon, dumb decision to switch them at night.
