Great video! Use a thicker nap roller and it'll take less coats of paint. Plus it'll hide little imperfections. You'll use the same amount of paint, just less work with less coats.
THANK YOU! Your instructions are sooo well expressed; not to mention your thoroughness. God's blessings to you n yours for explaining exactly what I need!!!
Your work is one of conviction and patience; I know I lack. I'm in the process of painting our new-old RV Interior, and have run in to those hideous (previously hidden) cracks along the walls and ceilings,, as I've painted; and, with the exceptions of the corner trim in the RV; which do need to be caulked, as you've shown. You've inspired me to replace all the horizontal trim with 11/16th PVC Quarter Round along ceilings and use 11/16 in. x 2-1/4 in. PVC Finger-Jointed Casing Molding for baseboards. Thanks for the heads up! I'll tack and glue the trim work instead. Phew!!
I'm repainting my interior RV also. Other rv'ers are saying they use a acetone to clean walls before painting. I am doing that then wiping down with water rag. I have found the acetone takes off the pattern in the vinyl covering on the walls. Sweet! They say even after a year the paint job has held up beautifully.
This entire video is worth it JUST for the caulking hack omg !! We’ve remodeled 2 houses and now doing our camper and I’ve never ever seen anyone talk about this!
planning to paint walls of a beautiful second hand fifth wheel and i want to do it the right way. Thanks for your honesty and your need to make it look good even on close inspection.
Great video. I like the sanding idea. Like you, I'm pretty anal when it comes to clean lines and stuff like that. Which is why I don't use anything but Frog Tape for painting. I use the cheap stuff for caulking though. I'm curious if that corner trim still moves on move days and you end up with cracked paint anyways? Again, thanks for the detailed video.
I’ve seen the frog tape, but never used it. Big difference? The corner I used for reference in the video is still doing well after a year and a half. There are some seams in the rig that I will need to recaulk due to cracking though.
What would happen if I paint over that? (the drips) Me: Awesome idea effect! 🤣 Not bad tutorial, pro tip on removing tape: pull off closer to the wall 1-2" length, reduces 'bump' tape lines. Subscribed!
You're right about cleaning. I've watched several videos where that step is not mentioned. In one video you could see a box of TSP in the background, but using it wasn't mentioned. Great video!
I have been repairing my motorhome which has the same type paper, I found peeling the wall paper off then using eggshell trade paint covers the walls very well!
Hey Gary, I believe we used semi-gloss. It’s been a while though. We did paint the cabinetry on the kitchen island. I didn’t do a video on that though. The cabinetry was a lot of sanding, priming, and painting, but it’s held up very well.
@@ProjectTrek whenever the creator takes time to respond, I have to add that you were entertaining, your family and home look wonderful, and thank you for teaching me because this information will definitely be used.
For the inner trim (or other small spaces), I get leftover nail sanding pads from the local nail lady.... 3 sides of sanding fun, and small to get in tight spaces... Reuse, recycle
Tried in once in our first 5th wheel and it was not pretty. There’s a sheen to the wallpaper that leaves a weird streaky texture. The sanding I do is just a light sanding.
We’re almost 1.5 years since the caulking was finished. Not sure how many miles we’ve covered, but we’ve traveled from S. Florida to S. Dakota, and there is some minimal cracks showing now, but not enough yet that I’d even consider fixing it yet.
What about the flat seems? Did you caulk them to make them appear to be flat or remove them altogether? I am getting ready to paint the bedroom and wanted to be sure that I caulk in all the right places.
I chose not to caulk the flat seams. While the taped seams DO show up after paint, they seem to be fairly clean and uniform in our rig. You could, but I don’t know that I’d produce a better result than what the seam tape already does.
Ice heard on the spots where there is a line on the wall from other sheets next to it or the corners not to paint or score it when your done because when moving the rv will move around and the paint will start to peel?
RV walls are typically made out of a material called Luan. Which is some kind of wood/fiber material. I’m not sure how wet you’re talking about, but it’s not a good idea for them to be saturated with any kind of liquid. It is happens and is caught immediately you can of course rapidly dry it with fans/dehumidifiers and maybe only have some issues with swelling, but water can easily damage walls.
Thank you for posting! We will be painting our RV soon and this was so helpful. When you remove the tape, is the paint still wet? I know some people have tried to remove the tape and it peels the paint off. Some say remove it wet, others say use a razor blade after it’s dry.
LOL I'm OCD about painting also. Wife always tries to help with taping but uses 4-6 inch strips and can overlap the ends cleanly to save her life 😂🤣😂 Out of curiosity is there any particular reason you didn't remove the trim pieces and refinish them separately or even just replaced them? Seems like it would have been much easier 🤷♂️ Glad to hear you have and are happy with the Ryobi tools. I just bought their big combo kit because Home Depot had it on sale for $199.
Got it, and yep I’m also just a guy who needs to do the occasional minor renovation done the best that I can. Once we get our fifth wheel, hopefully by the end of August, after we are settled in for a while, we know we will be renovating ours too.
Awesome video. By far the best and most thorough explanation of how to paint RV interior walls. Thank you! Have you noticed the paint cracking in any corners due to vibration caused by driving your rig down the highway?

@@ProjectTrek Sorry for the typo, but what I meant to say was "warped" old wallpaper from the manufacturer. How can go about smoothing those out before painting over it.
Gotcha. We’ve had spots where the wallpaper was a little rippled/bunched-up. Sanding it down and then applying a thin coat of spackle, and then sanding that down to match the rest of the wall as best as possible. It won’t be perfect, but it’ll do.
I have an idea/question. Couldn't you just remove that cheap crap corner trim completely since your painting and just caulk the corner and paint over without that corner trim?
You are likely to find some rather large gaps where the two walls meet, or don't, as the case may be. Possibly too large to caulk successfully, and, if caulked, more likely to come apart when the rig is moved.
Ok. I bite. I need to know why. I haven t started yet but im trying to pearn as much as I can. I live full time off grid in an 30ft 5th wheel. Hey Corey, we did end up replacing some of the trim. At the time I wasn’t sure which route I wanted to take, since some of the trim I wouldn’t match from HD or Lowe’s. Certainly an easier route.
This was my question also. What makes the difference of silicone vs latex caulk? Would it need to be the same base as the paint? If I used latex paint do i need to use latex caulk?
I guess that in the 3 years since this video was posted, you've learned that you can apply paint over silicone caulking but it flakes off and looks terrible very quickly.
I could have caulked that bathroom in 5 minutes! None of that needed to be taped because it was going to be painted over anyway. A small hole with a v cut in a tube of caulk with a caulk gun and just caulk it...no taping necessary! I only tape caulk when the caulk line will be visible like on a countertop edge or something.
Great job. But let me make this a little easier for everyone. No sanding necessary. Good paint will adhere direct without sanding. Also, no primer necessary. Use a self priming paint like HGTV Showtime from Lowe’s. Use two coats.
First, stop saying 'silicone' because you CAN NOT paint over silicone. Second, you can clearly see the crack in your finished caulk line. You shouldn't be taping off caulk if your going to be painting it. As you learned, caulking will shrink as it dries and if you don't have feathered edges it will pull away from the surfaces..

Yes, if you use the right caulk you can paint it and it will flex with the RV. As far as managing expectations - there will be a lot of touching-up.
The moment you said Lowe’s and Home Depot was out of masks because of the BS corona stuff, I instantly gave you a thumbs up! 😂🙌🏼

Did you consider skim coating the walls to smooth out the texture?
I didn’t. There wasn’t much texture to begin with. The sanding was primarily to rough up the surface somewhat to prep for primer.

Oh if they occasionally get sprayed with water from the shower it’s no big deal, but if it’s consistently getting soaked that’s not good.
would a vent pipe have poo in it that high up?
If you filled your tank up maybe, more than likely though you’ll just have sewer gases stinking up the place.
Thank you for posting! We will be painting our RV soon and this was so helpful. When you remove the tape, is the paint still wet? I know some people have tried to remove the tape and it peels the paint off. Some say remove it wet, others say use a razor blade after it’s dry.
