  • This episode is the first half of a quick story of how we set up our glamping site, Tractors and Cream, in Somerset, UK. From working out the business idea to landscaping and building yurt bases.
    We show you planting hedges, building yurt bases and going from an idea to a reality in our own 'Living the Dream' story with our 2 young children.

    Could lavender thrive there, that would have been a great hedge!

      Ooh interesting idea, I keep meaning to plant some lavender and then forget about it! It would smell amazing!

      Hi, if you click through onto our channel there is a part 2 of this video and also 3 years worth of videos all about running a glamping site and also interviews with other glamping sites about how they got started and their set-ups. Hope that helps but if you have any questions then please feel free to get in touch. Thanks, Vicki

    Nice introduction video. What kind of planning permission was required?

      Thanks! We had to get change of use to a fixed tent campsite but it means we are only allowed to have canvas structures unfortunately. No wood or caravans.

    Hi there, great video. I'm just wondering on the planning permission side of things. Did you essentially purchase an agricultural field from a farmer and then get planning permission to build on it? Is your residential property (home) also on this newly acquired piece of land? Looking to set something up myself but it seems buying greenfield land and then getting planning permission for shepherds huts on it seems like a tall order! Thanks and great work :)

      Hi, thanks for getting in touch. So we bought the house with the land attached not knowing that we were going to start a glamping site! We wanted to make the land work for us so decided to go down the glamping route and got permission for a fixed tent campsite. We aren't allowed Shepherds huts or caravans though. Most sites with shepherds hut that I've spoken to have bought a house with land and then applied for planning afterwards for one hut at a time. Are you in the UK? Thanks, Vicki

      @@TractorsandCream Hi Vicki, and thanks for your response! definitely good to take in all this info :). And yes I am UK based. Me and my partner are looking to buy land to build a cabin on and have some shepherds huts for glamping. I've read our best shot at this involves the eco angle through increasing biodiversity which we would love to do anyway so hopefully we can find a suitable plot!

      Good luck, really hope you find something. There is a brilliant group on facebook called the glamping site owners club which is always useful if you have questions especially to ask if people have gone down the biodiversity route. They might be able to help. Let us know how you get on. Vicki

    Hi, how much land do you have for the glamping site? How many acres would you recommend?

    • @TractorsandCream
      @TractorsandCream  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Ben, the field is 6 acres and then our house plus other communal areas are another 1.5 acres. It depends on what you want from it. We have friends who run a glamping site in their back garden and then know of other sites with 1 shepherds hut in 20 acres. We like the space we have between each of our accommodation and people have commented how nice it is not to be packed in like some of the franchised glamping sites. My advice would be to get the land that you can and then start with 1 or 2 pods/yurts/bell tents and add gradually. We like living on site and the land is manageable although Bryan mows for 5 hours a week in the summer! Thanks, Vicki

      @@TractorsandCream Hi Vicki, that's really useful to know! To be honest, this is my dream once I leave my current career in a few years so I'm aware that things can change, however I'm starting to do my research in the meantime. I've eyed up a few potential sites with between 6-8 acres so it is good to know that you don't necessarily need a huge estate to run something like this. My wife and I may book a stay with you once this Covid situation starts to wane - thanks again!
