    Kalibos has been in my garden every year beginning in 2016! It is susceptible to damage from cabbage loopers, so I'm constantly on the lookout! The flavor of this one, however, is worth the struggles against pests. Michelle, thank you so much for doing the videos for SEED STORIES -- love them! Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA -- 8/20/2019.

      Is there a group that exchanges rare seeds?

      Hello, Eswari. BAKER CREEK HEIRLOOM SEED COMPANY has the best variety of rare seeds; but, yes, there are also other groups around the country that exchange rare seeds -- depending upon location. BTW, There will be daily "seed swaps" at the Heirloom Seed Festival in Santa Rosa, CA September 10, 11, and 12! The Organic Seed Alliance has an annual Conference and seed swap. If there isn't a group in your location... you could do what I did and start one! I started the GARDEN CLUB OF OLYMPIA back in 2014 so that like-minded, home, gardeners could share seeds and information. I do not know where you are located. If you would like to get on the monthly mailing list for the GARDEN CLUB OF OLYMPIA, send an email to: talkingthreadsmedia@gmail.com
      Good luck and Best wishes, Kate.

    How facinating! I would totally watch if you did a series on the history of all the brassica crops.

    I started this outside and germinated fine, but it has come up as ruffly leaves. This is my first time growing Calibos cabbage. Does it head out later? The history is interesting, but we'd really like more info on growing and harvesting.

    Is this cabbage grown in the fall?

    • @RareSeedsBC
      @RareSeedsBC  5 років тому +2

      It is not recommended for direct sowing in the fall; however, for a fall crop you may start the seedlings four to six weeks before transplanting outdoors in August. It's about 75 days to maturity.

      Hi, Sheila. Hope you don't mind if I step in to help provide an answer... I am in Zone 8b of Olympia, WA. I get two harvests per year from this variety, but it takes a little planning. My Kalibos seeds are started indoors in early March and are then transplanted into the garden in early April and are protected under row covers until we get past frost. Since the days are getting longer and warmer, the first harvest is at roughly 85 days. In early July, I started the second batch of seeds. The plants were subsequently transplanted into the garden in early August. When we get close to frost this fall, I will again cover the Kalibos. Because the days are getting shorter and the temps begin cooling down, the days to maturity lengthens out -- mid October to early November. (Regularly watch the underside of the leavers for the worms of cabbage loopers). Hope these time frames help you know when to plant Kalibos in your area. Kalibos has a terrific flavor and the sugar content is a little higher than for regular cabbage. It also stores quite well. Good luck! Best wishes, Kate.

      Our inventory does change a bit from year to year, but there's a chance we may be able to offer it again in the future.
