Yo im from Chile, around that age a football team crashed too near the same region but like more south, they called it Green Cross, after the crash it lost most their players and combined with a team that still exists and its called Deportes Temuco, it plays on the 2nd division
Update: I looked up if any of the 16 survivors are still alive, and only 14 are still alive. Sadly, two survivors have passed away, those being Javier Methol, who passed away in 2015, and José Luis “Coche” Inciarte, who passed away in 2023. I looked into it, and I can only find the cause of death for José Luis “Coche” Inciarte, which was cancer.
The saddest part of this is that the survivors felt such intense guilt that the only thing that helped them feel better was the POPE forgiving them of their sins because it was a survival situation.
Something to note that was missed in regards to why they couldn't be seen by earlier rescue craft, it wasn't just the distance but also the Glaring brightness of the white snow in direct sunlight

I met Carlos Páez Rodríguez at his father's residence/hotel in Punta del Este (Uruguay), a very kind and calm person... between one mate and another he ended up confessing to me that there were things that were agreed upon Never to talk to anyone and to take it to the grave (Who knows what happened so that none of the survivors would ever tell it) And if you wonder why they ate the pilots first... well, in his words... "we didn't know them."
I read the book Alive back in middle school (The book came out 20 years before the movie did). The story of what they went through is intense to say the least. I highly recommend reading it. But be warned, it is pretty brutal at times.
In my personal opinion, one should first read Alive, to get a very detailed idea of the ordeal. It’s an amazing book, however, Piers Paul Read apologized to the survivors for misrepresenting them on it. Because of that, one should also read Society of the Snow after it. To be able to understand each survivor’s perspective and how they actually felt
A little known fact is that their ordeal wouldn't have been that brutal if they walked the opposite way following a river downstream. The dying pilot told them they were really close to Chile but in reality they crashed in the Argentine side of the Andes, a few hours walk from an abandoned hotel with hot springs and a shepherd's post.
Also as another crazy thing, the Chilean authorities couldn't take all of the survivors home the day they found them, so some of the survivors had to go **another** day in the Andes before rescue came the next day. The Chilean authorities did leave doctors with them overnight to make sure they were okay, though. Just crazy to think some guys had to be like "yeah, it's chill enough here to go one more day"
