fun fact: this was the last game with the legend John madden broadcasting
: (
Not a very fun fact ):
Sad , this was my first super bowl
Great game to go out on.
RIP
The catch by Holmes is always talked about, and rightly so. But the throw by Roethlisberger is one of the best of all time, I have no clue how he fit it in there.
That’s a great point the throw doesn’t get enough credit

The very last game John Madden ever called. RIP legend
It still amazes me how the Cardinals even made it this far. One month prior, they were barely above .500, and were coming off of a 47-7 loss to Matt Cassel's Patriots. The fact that they were a minute away from winning the Super Bowl is incredible
And it’s not like they had a championship caliber defensive roster either.
@@JahNuhThunDeeTheOneAndOnly it's just one of those rare times a non championship caliber team almost got it done
Perfect storm. Catch an overachieving Falcons team at home even with a lesser record. Beat an eminently beatable Panthers team on the road, then get the Eagles at HOME instead of having to go to Jersey because they beat the champion Giants. And then the Steelers...who have had a history under Cowher and Tomlin of playing down to their opposition...this probably should've been a boatracing, but Pittsburgh let them hang around until they had to win.
@@continuethecycleofhate6015 Not just non championship caliber-they are considered one of the worst playoff teams ever!

As a cardinals fan i only have one word to say about this game and that is “Pain”😞
As a falcons fan, Ik how you feel😞
As a Steelers fan, happy we won but sad that this was the only chance Larry had to win a ring
As a Titans fan I can relate
@@russellstutler9340 Nah we blew Larry’s chances multiple times. In 2009 the team wet the bed vs New Orleans in the playoffs. Then in 2014 Palmer got hurt right before the playoffs so that dashed our chances. And in 2015 we didn’t even show up in the NFC championship game
@@djnfbrhkelkondwvb6853 yeah but this one was in the Superbowl and one minute away from the win

Might be the best Super Bowl of all-time. Tons of iconic plays, great displays of both offense and defense instead of just one side dominating (like LII where it was all offense), and an iconic finish
Yeah, this was my favorite Super Bowl ever (in terms of entertainment), until XLIX. Still a top 3 SB.
i will never forget this moment assa steeler fan. i was young but i could vividly remember the match in my room. the excitement when that catch was caught
Got to watch the game with my idol growing up (my grandfather) and my wife made the food that he never had before and he absolutely loved it. He thought the world of her and was proud of me. He passed away in 2010 and she left me this year. But it still is one of my happiest days ever.

That throw has got to be one of the best ever
The funny thing is nobody really talks about Ben’s throw as one of the best all time. Obviously people talk about Holmes as one of the best catches ever, but I honestly believe the throw was just as better than the catch
And Ben should have been named the MVP. Not Holmes. Ben m threaded that unbelievable pass to Holmes for the winning TD.
That Harrison INT return for TD was epic

The results of this Super Bowl completely overshadow the fact that these Steelers had perhaps one of the best defenses ever.

Warner, Fitzgerald, and Darnell Dockett. Big Ben, Holmes and those PITT LBs. This Super Bowl had everything, that second half was so intense!
I remember watching this game with a bunch of friends in college. I was the only one who really cared about football, but the Harrison play caught *everybody's* attention. It's fitting that the last game John Madden called wound up being a classic. I wanted Pittsburgh to win, but it really, really sucks that this will likely be as close as Larry Fitzgerald ever gets to a ring.
Larry Fitzgerald’s TD catch and run late in this game was one of the best plays in NFL history. Just amazing.

Not remotely a fan of either team but this is my personal favorite super bowl even over ones the team I root for have won. The James Harrison INT return before halftime & Santonio Holmes edge of the end zone catch are etched into my memory forever.
Yup.
As a Steelers fan I would have thought that Santonio immediately became my favorite player, but no. Larry Fitzgerald became my favorite player that day, a guy I have revered and admired for years. What a second-half performance, worthy of MVP honors had the Cards held their lead. All my respect to Larry and to Kurt Warner. Best SuperBowl ever. When Larry scored that TD I was in tears thinking the Steelers would not have enough left in the tank to come back and at least tie it. That Ben throw and Santonio catch is a moment in time.
“Roethlisberger, has time. Throws to the back of the end zone and it is....caught for a touchdown, by Holmes.” Iconic
I was blessed enough to be at this game. I still feel Ben should of been the MVP but seeing your squad win a Super Bowl is so priceless.

Went to this game. One of the coolest days of my life.
My family and I are all from not far from Pittsburgh and eventually we all uprooted and moved to Florida little by little. When the Steelers advanced to the Super Bowl in early 2009 the game was only 90 minutes from where we all lived in Florida. My dad figured it was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the Steelers to be in the Super Bowl with all of us living that close to the game site. There was him (68) my mom (61) myself (38) my sister (almost 43) my two brothers (40 and 23) my two nephews (20 and 14) and my niece (17). He paid for half of everyone's ticket and we all paid the other half for our own. I can't tell you to this day what is what like tailgating at the Super Bowl with your team in it with all of your family who you know have all been genuine fans forever. Had we lost it would have sucked bad, but still would have been a great memory. However, winning that Super Bowl in that fashion with all of us there together remains the greatest family moment I think of all of our lives. Since then my sister has moved back up north and is now 55, as have all three of her kids, which are my nephews 33 and almost 28 and my niece who is 29, and just recently I have too and am about to be 51. So that's 4 of that crowd who are no longer in Florida. My dad is now almost 80, my mom just turned 74 and my two brothers are 36 and 53.
Came to watch the last Super Bowl Mr. John Madden called. RIP
This is the game that got me not only invested in the NFL and football for the rest of my life, but also I found my love for The Office. Can't forget the legendary Fire Drill cold opening.
It's a bummer that Warner and Fitz didn't get a win, but it was well played on both sides, and just a spectacle to watch
I vaguely remember seeing this game at my neighbor's place next door from where I currently live and, honestly, this was one of the greatest super bowls I've ever seen in my entire life.
Watching the highlights of one of the best Super Bowl matches in recent memory, SB XLIII between the Big Ben-led Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals, who had the great Kurt Warner as their QB.
Plus, it was nice to know that Al Michaels and the legendary Hall of Fame coach John Madden were the ones covering the big game!
RIP Coach Madden.
I Was really rooting for Kurt Warner to have a walk into the sun set
Same, but the Cardinals gave a prime Big Ben too much time to work with
@@808mitch yeah larry prolly shoulda gone down at the 8 yard line to set up a likely 2 down first and goal prolly shoulda waited until after the 2 minute warning to score or a little less.

It’s February 1, 2009. We’re at Raymond James Stadium for Super Bowl XLIII. The Cardinals are leading the Steelers by 3 with less than minute in the 4th quarter with the Steelers in goal-to-go.
We know what happens but those watching the game don’t know what is about to happen.
So how did we get here?
Let’s rewind...
My dad will never forget that moment as a Steelers fan
The catch by Santonio Holmes is still the best catch and throw in super bowl history with the three defenders around him along the sideline. Still shocking that this was the last super bowl that big ben won and the only one that fitzgerald made. Just goes to show that these players need to cherish the moment because it is so hard to get back to the super bowl unless your name is tom brady.
Best Catch in superbowl history
1. Holmes(Clutch)
2. Tyree(Most Meaningful)
3. Edelman(Craziest)
Worst Catch in superbowl history
1. Smith(The sickest man in America)
2. Brady(6 sb rings)
You can also put Eli Manning's laser to Mario Manningham in Super 46. Now that is one of the best throws and catches ever.
That pick 6 has to be a top 5 play of all time
One of the greatest superbowls ever. The amount of big momentum swinging plays was just unbelievable.
Uh no thank
Santonio was amazing on this drive. Even better when you see the him jump up on the sideline after that Larry TD like "Time to be great!" and tells Ben he wants the ball.
This is the first superbowl I remember watching with my dad. Seeing him get upset when the steelers won cemented my hate for the steelers as well (we're Browns fans). But I enjoy looking back and watching these old games because it reminds me of watching football with my dad
As a lifelong steelers fan, who goes to the news years games in Cleveland, I really want the browns to be good again. That was one of the great rivalries in pro sports. It continued when they left for Baltimore. But we all want that rivalry back.
Even back then they were the Pittsburgh Field Goals. Still amazing game and I really miss those steelers. Even that Roethlisberger.
Could not agree more
The only game that was better than this was the AFC championship that same year against the Ravens. That was the greatest football game I ever watched!!
The AFC Championship was where I took my now wife on our first date.
Unpopular opinion: but Big Ben should’ve been MVP of this game. He played a great game! The Steelers couldn’t run the ball on the night, so he was the offense... and went for 12/30 256 yards, 1TD and a pick off a big deflection. Led them on the winning drive starting from their 12, after the holding call. He should’ve been MVP!
Maybe, especially when you consider his extending the plays on the crazy pass to Miller midway through the game and doing the same on the final drive backed up to the end zone, and his pump later in the drive holding a defender so Holmes could get freed up for the big catch and run. However, the TD was both Ben and Holmes but Holmes also had 131 yds on 9 catches and the game winning TD. Ben went to Holmes 4 of his 5 completions on the game winning drive. On paper a WR with 9 catches for 131 and the game winning TD catch will beat the QB that's 12 for 30 with 256 yds and the game winning TD pass. If Ben was over 300 yds or if the game winner goes to anyone else but Holmes than he wins it. But if you consider his escape-ability he may have deserved it anyway lol
At least i can say my poor Cardinals were in one of the best (if not the best) Super Bowl in NFL history
They fighted well and with a 9-7 record they managed to make an unbelievable SB run, unfortunately one Santonio Holmes ended the redbirds cinderella season
Thanks for the memories Kurt & Larry, future HOFrs for sure

I think it’s the second best of the 2000’s, behind the Pats vs Panthers super bowl
That Santonio Holmes catch has to be like Top 2 greatest plays on Super Bowl history! It literally was the winning play and the winning score
It still hurts that this was Larry’s best chance to win a Super Bowl and it didn’t happen. Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald were an excellent tandem together.
A game Winner Well go down in sports history
Before Harrison’s interception, Madden said, “there’s a pick down here”. Instant Karma for Larry was that he slid his legs under the ball and sealed the deal for the TD call for Harrison because the ball didn’t hit the ground. It hit Larry’s legs.
The Sixburgh Steelers say thank you, Larry.
pretty much the last time the Super Bowl felt "super"
It was my first year watching football in 08 I was only 8 and this super bowl made me a die hard Steelers fan
The Tampa Toe Tap should be the name of the Santonio Holmes catch from now on. It's a remarkable catch in the annals of nfl history. Like the Immaculate Reception, like the Music City miracle, like the Miracle in the Meadowlands, like the Minnesota Miracle, like the Philly Special, like the Steel Curtain, like The Legion of Boom, like the No Fly Zone. It deserves a cool nickname.
